The Holy Grail of the SNES Collector's Items - Cost: $3,000
Butmac | 5:11 PM on 12.30.2007 26 comments

Was just on digg, and after some searching on eBay found the item the article was describing.

The auction is here and boy is it a doozy.

You have to drop $3000 cool ones on it but damn, talk about bragging rights. The guy is claiming to have an original unreleased development controller for the SNES. Oh, and it also comes with a dev kit CD. People are hardcore about the SNES so having this would be really badass to say the least even though you couldn't do anything with it at all.

Oh, except be really badass. Did I mention that?

*UPDATE* Apparently Sony and Nintendo had a deal...? Something about a CD-i? Nintendo was like no thank you and Sony was all "Ok well then, playstation in your eye." Blah blah blah. $3,000 controller YESSSSSS.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

You know there are some things that are worth 3 G's but that money could buy you a new entertainment system or a really awesome hooker(s).

Its for the SNES CD, which later became the Playstation. And it doesn't come with a dev kit. Matlocked!

Meh, I can see why this wasn't the final design. The SNES controller was much better.

Question & Answer Answered On
Q: wheres the proof? the only pic of the back you provide has the cord strategically placed to cover half the markings on the back. looks like an old (crappy) pc port controller to me Dec-30-07
A: Ok I moved the cord. Here are the numbers 4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42. I better get these to Jack Shephard and see if they are important.
Q: i dont think anyone will buy this for 3000 Dec-30-07
A: Hmm well atleast the Browns won today!
Q: I googled your ebay name and found a link that said you owned original paintings for Nintendo games but the pictures were down. Do you have a current link to these. Where do you find all this stuff! Dec-30-07
A: Yes! I am always looking to buy more! Here is a gallery with some of my favorites I've collected so far. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=25183
Q: I call fake too. And yes we do all want to know how you found it? Dec-30-07
A: I did not find it. I did not make it. Its not a fake and matches the colors of my drapes far to well for me ever to sell it.
Q: the truth : http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/mallorcadisco/infoconsolas/paginas/Nintendo/Snes%20CD/snescd.htm (end of the page) Dec-30-07
A: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You?
Q: Are you a f**ing half-wit? Only a fool would pay you what you want for this, plus add shipping. F*CK YOU! Dec-30-07
A: Do you find you experience road rage more often than twice a day?
Q: i think your guility Dec-30-07
A: I'm going to say this again. I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.
Q: Every time someone asks a question with their website, they're using you for free advertising hoping you'll put it on your auction page! After all, you're officially on engadget, so you'll be getting some serious publicity! Now here's my site: www.Listed1st.com. Take it easy man! -J Dec-30-07
A: Who would stoop so low as to.........hey wait a minute.
Q: I hope my 20 dollar offer wins :) Dec-30-07
A: 20 bucks ! How can I hope to support my drug habit with 20 bucks?
Q: Could you lower the price? Dec-30-07
A: How about $4.88 ?
Q: i like turtles. Dec-30-07
A: Heroes in a half shell. TURTLE POWER!
Q: The cable on the controller, do you know if it is the original cable or not? Or is that cable not the cable that was originally on the controller? Dec-30-07
A: Yes its the original cable. Its a dev controller which is why it has the strange pc type connection. Thats the original twist-tie I pulled it out of the bag because I had to get a closer look but never unwrapped the twist tie.
Q: Do you have any edvidence of that thing being real? Or at least a picture of the actual unit to that controller? Dec-30-07
A: Here is a picture from what I believe was the CGE show in Vegas where the only known surviving unit was displayed by a Sony rep. Other pics are available on the net if you look around. As you can see the controllers are identical. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i107/mark30001/snescd.jpg
Q: I call fake and shenanigans, what say you? Dec-29-07
A: Now I know how Roger Clemens feels.
Q: Just out of curiosity...How did you get your hands on this thing? Dec-29-07
A: Thats a good question.
Q: Hi, that controller is very cool. But out of my limit...;-( My request: I´m a fan of all the old videogames. I have a special website (www.videospiele-nachschlagewerk.de) just in german. I wanted to ask you if i could use some pictures of that controller for my site? I´m searching for such pictures. I´m looking forward for an answer of you. All the best wishes. S. Fischer Dec-29-07
A: Go ahead, pictures are free. If you want to hold it I charge for that.
Q: For $2,999, you couldnt throw in free shipping? wtf? Dec-29-07
A: Ok but just for you.
Q: Do you plan on selling the system too? Dec-29-07
A: sorry

Nintendo was going to side with Sony to make a CD console but instead turned and went with CD-i.

I thought everyone knew that -_-

Butmac, read the original article from digg. It's a prototype controller for the failed SNES CDROM expansion, the PlayStation. This is from when Sony and Nintendo were friends and were going to make a console together, starting with the SNES expansion port. Things went sour and Sony went its own way. The rest is history.

Yeah. Sony was going to make a CD attachment for Nintendo the SNES, Like that Sega CD. Nintendo backed out and Sony went on to make the Playstation with the resulting technology.

If you look up the number on the back of the controller (DTL-H500C) google search comes up with 3 entries, one is the ebay auction and the other two are about PSX, one says it's a PSX dev controller.

That controller could easily be made, its just a serial adapter. And as far as the development software, im sure its awesome since its probably 15 years old, or more.

Something I find funny and something that most people tend to overlook is that the bulk of the development for the CD-i was done by Phllips and it was Nintendo breaking contract from Sony (who was originally intended to design the CD add on for the Super-Fami) that pushed them into creating the PSX. Anyone who has even played the horrific Zelda spinoffs on the Cd-i should be glad that the deal fell through...I doubt Nintendo would have allowed them to be release on their console anyway o.O
