Last week I asked 7 questions to people here on the C-Blogs.
Questions: How old are you?
What was the first FPS you played and how old were you when you played it?
Have you ever played/heard of Blake Stone or Rise of the Triad?
Which did you own first if at all: Xbox or PS2?
Do you wear baseball caps on a somewhat daily basis?
Yes or No: Would you consider yourself a fan of the Madden games?
Yes or No: Would you consider yourself a fan of the Halo series?
I received 54 responses and I had no idea how much data and information sifting I would be doing. If I was a wizard in excel then it would take me about 30 minutes. Too bad I'm a bastard.
Anyway, my original problem with Halo has been one of "what's so great about Halo that time stops for some people when they think about it?" The Halo games are good games - but in no way are they deserving of the unbelievable attention they get...
...unless...
you never experienced those games that did what Halo does now, years earlier. Hmmm.
As you probably remember, Halo was originally supposed to be a PC game. It looked really sweet and people were excited. However, somewhere along the way it got switched over to this new Microsoft console called the Xbox.
That right there is the only reason Halo is as successful as it is today.
Microsoft took what would have been a good PC game and brought it a console where there was nothing like that of it's kind or quality. It became what I would say was my generation's Goldeneye (except Goldeneye is so much better like zomg!!1).
That's why I asked in my survey if you had heard of or played Blake Stone or Rise of the Triad. These are some old school FPS's that are glorified versions of Wolfenstein 3d and Doom. Rise of the Triad was more ingenuitive because it was very gory and the enemies looked like people, not cartoon people. I was willing to wager that if you had played or at least heard of Blake Stone and RotT, then Halo was not going to be something that made you foam at the mouth or wait in line at midnight with a bunch of high schoolers so you could get home and play it until 6 in the morning.
Turns out I was right. Only 15% of people that responded that had heard of or played Blake Stone and RotT also considered themselves a fan of the Halo series.
Now a LOT of factors I think contribute to this and like I said before, I am not a wizard at excel so I can't really analyze this data in a timely fashion. I did notice that those whose first FPS was a newer game like Perfect Dark 64 or Goldeneye did tend to like Halo. Also, most people said that the first FPS they played was Wolfenstein 3d or Doom but those who played it at around age 8 as opposed to around age 13, were not Halo fans.
Anyway, there's a lot that can be taken from the results and I appreciate everyone that participated.
I missed the survey, but I started on Quake and moved backwards to Duke Nukem (which though came out after Quake, it was about the same time, but Duke Nukem was more about the humor than it was the overall bad assness). I am 26 but was too poor to have a PC when all the FPS crap was really starting. I hate to say it, but Goldeneye was the first FPS that got me hooked. Then I played it multiplayer after beating everything and holy shit I was hooked again. I fail because I hate keyboard/mouse vs controller. I can play the hell out of Halo 3, though I know something like.. Call of Duty 4 rapes Halo 3 in nearly almost every way, yet I probably wont purchase CoD4. Halo storylines/campaign is retarded, I bought it solely for multiplayer (though I have done co-op, but I end up just betraying my little brother and his friends, god the campaign is so shitty, retarded backtracking, enemies and friends, then enemies again, and etc etc.. so poorly done) Anyways, yeah, I missed the survey :(
Let's put the stupid Halo backtracking on a scale here. More or less than any given Metroid Prime game?
Also, I love how JACK is always quick to defend when it comes to his precious Halo. How about STFUAJPG instead of jumping to defend it every time? If you like it, that should be enough for you.
Missed the original survey, too. Wolfenstein 3D popped my FPS cherry, even though it wasn't technically 3D.
But on to more pressing questions: the correlation between baseball caps and Madden? Although you're not exactly getting the most well-rounded sample of either Madden or Halo fans here at the 'toid.
I missed the survey, so I'll reaffirm some of your facts in a comment.
1. 24
2. Doom (I think I was 12 or 13, but i'd heard of it before)
3. Actually, no.
4. PS2, it launched first
5. nope
6. I hate madden
7. I hate Hypo
"Also, most people said that the first FPS they played was Wolfenstein 3d or Doom but those who played it at around age 8 as opposed to around age 13, were not Halo fans."
Halo's backtracking was almost as bad as The Darkness. JACK if you like going back through the empty hallways of levels previously beaten, you are much more retarded than previously thought.
Butmac I am confused about your statistics, but..uh.. HALOES!
Halo 1 has backtracking in spades... halo 3 didnt have much, as far as i can remember. maybe in the second level?
Butmac is right, i suppose. I still make the argument that the halo games are great, as well made and as entertaining as any of the other pc fps' i have, but the mega attention and hype they get is because the xbox has nothing else like them.
Well, its getting some. Itll be interesting to see the reaction to stuff like the Orange box and Unreal tournament 3. Not... superior stuff, just different. Variety is good.
I feel bad for things like Orange Box and UT3, they have huge established fan bases, but all on PC, who have very little reason to switch to console.
Console users no doubt have heard of these titles, but PC snobs end up making console user not give them a chance (at the least UT3 does have a chance because people will be like "Oh shit its the engine that Gears of War was made on omg"). Consoles need more original IPs right now (though Call of Duty 4 beta floated my boat big time).

I thought I saw that MOST people UNDER the age of 22 were Halo fans. But that goes along with your first FPS thingy.
RotT rocks hard. Wasnt that the first game where you could dual weild too? Those dual pistols bring back fond memories.
Interesting results butmac. Theres still one thing I don't get, what was the point of asking which system we owned first?
Who cares! Halo is fun to play.
Marathon came out a year before RotT, did it have Dual-wielding?

"retarded backtracking"
Looks like someone hasn't played the game. Look at my post above please!!!!!!!
"enimies again"
Thats what the games about dumbass!
Looks like someone is awfully defensive.
Oh JACK, I can't believe you are denying that Halo has stupid backtracking. If you think it doesn't you need your head examined.
Nice work Butmac, if you still have the data, I'll run it through SPSS(statistics program) if you want.

Metroid Prime is overrated, but has some of the best graphics the Wii can offer.
I await Super Mario Galaxy badly, with Mario Kart coming in second badly (and a third badly coming very close with Smash Bros).
I just await the day I can dust off my Wii, I refuse to sell it, but I have no desire to play it.
Oh yeah, Halo campaign sucks for being so epic. But I will stfuajpmultiplayer because it does shine there.
I missed the survey, so I'll reaffirm some of your facts in a comment.

@blindside
In Marathon, you could dual wield pistols and shotguns.
I feel bad for things like Orange Box and UT3, they have huge established fan bases, but all on PC, who have very little reason to switch to console.

Console are basically computers nowdays. PC ports will only be worst in the future.
Butmac this is awesome...Also you should get a PS3 to do all your computing.
Can the PSTripuhlz fold excel sheets?
Is that lemon playing guitar hero in that STFUAJPG gif, Jack?
JACK wouldn't know. He hasn't been here long enough to know the history, or gone out of his way to find out.
Yes it is Buck.
