Seriously, What is so great about Resident Evil 4?
Bricfa | 7:59 PM on 07.18.2007 26 comments

I was just watching Xplay's Top 10 games ever special. While I wasn't expecting a superb list, their #1 pick really bugs me. As the title subtly hinted at, I am talking about RE4. Try as I might, I cannot comprehend why this game is so acclaimed.

Early this year EB games was selling RE4 cheap. I had given my uncle a copy for the previous Christmas, and he said it turned out to be one of the best games he had ever played. I had read good reviews, so I decided to pick it up.

When i put it in my Ps2, it started out promising enough. it looked good for a ps2 game. Then I started playing it. I immediately disliked the movement controls, but That didn't deter me. I til I got to my first crazy villager. The aiming system turned out to be just as awkward as the movement. you have to fight against the avatar to aim where you wish to. Not only that, but you cannot move while aiming. I didn't play well through this first bit, and I ended up dying twice. I gave up on it for a little while, and played something else.

Shortly after buying the game, I finally got my Ps3. So I got into resistance and forgot about RE4. A few days ago I was going through my old Ps2 games. I decided to give Re4 another spin since I had never actually played the game.

I figured out a few new things - you can run, and kick stunned enimies. that helped some, but I still didn't like the movement controls. anyway I learned from playing it earlier that I couldn't just walk into the middle of this town, so I sneaked (snuck isn't a word?) around the side, I had to get buy this woman who saw me. I knew if I used my gun the other not zombies would detect me. So I tried to use the knife. It turned out to be utterly fucking useless, so I ended up shooting her again. I dashed for the gate. Where I found a guy with a chainsaw, and a paper bag over his head. I shot him a few times, but that didn't phase him at all. Then he chainsawed my head off. I tried again, same thing. IN still had no idea how to get past that area, So I said fuck this, and I fired up Burnout 3.

I am amazed that this game is so beloved when I hate it so. I am sure I could eventually figure out how to get past there, but I don't care. The game has very clumsy controls, and is very cheap/unclear what you are supposed to do, at least in the beginning. Seriously, what the fuck is so great about this game?

it was an ok game, at the time alot of nonstellar titles were coming out. i never fully considered it a resident evil game tho, in my eyes its a spin off of the series. but its also a game that has appealed to graphic whores.

I know that RE4 takes a little getting used to if you never really played RE before, but I have a hard time believing people played it when they question it's quality.

"The game has very clumsy controls"

Don't expect to run up to people, shoot them and then not have to worry about getting hit. RE4 is a game about positioning yourself and taking advantage of situations, not SHOOTAN.

"and is very cheap/unclear what you are supposed to do"

I have no idea what you are talking about, especially since it's the most linear RE game ever made.

"at least in the beginning"

The woman on the radio tells you what to do!

You really have to earn your opinion. I didn't play Halo 2 for 10 minutes and then declare it as "bad" because I suck at it.

mehe don't feel bad Bricfa, i also thought that socoms and metal gear solid were over rated. different strokes for different folks i guess. resident evil 4 takes some stratagy and tact i kept getting stuck where you were too. you gotta run into the buildings and such make it hard for them to swarm on you. only all through out the game.

Yeah, I admitted I hadn't played the game through. This is not a review. But the controls just seem so horrible. It had alot of one of my gaming pet peves in it. Games that limit what you can do for no good reason. Maybe If i willed myself into getting used to the weird-at-best controls, then I could start having fun, but I would rather start having fun immediatly in another game.

Well i can't really comment on the PS2 version of the game, but I have had the wii version and played it to death, finished every section, even the ada wong side quests and found it to be very very fun game. But whether thats down to the wii control system remains to be seen

Yeah, as much as it annoys me to say it since I think it's criminal that Capcom just ported a game for a quick cash in, the Wii version is superior. Aiming is so much easier, although I remember playing the PS2 version and didn't think it was that hard. I died a bit, but it was my first playthrough.

My only gripe is that it can get repetitive, but they change it up later on a bit. The cart scene was really fun to do.

This reminds me of the post last night of saying Touch the Dead sucks and isn't as good as a puzzle game case the graphics...without playing it.

Ok so they aren't the same but I couldn't help but laugh during both readings.

Plus, part of the problem was that you played the PS2 version. PS2 can't handle and process all the Gamecube graphics...Gamecube was rated better cause it was MADE for the cube controller. But as others have said, you obviously haven't played a Resident Evil game.

RE games are NOT guns a blazing run into a middle of bad guys and jump around and pull out a plasma sword to kill them in one shot.

But maybe you should try it again but this time, play the game but this time WITHOUT previously knowledge of the game and don't think it is like other games besides an RE game. There is a reason why the game got MANY Game of the Year awards and still heralded as one of the greatest games of all time...can't be all bad huh?

Admittedly that introductory sequence is pretty tough first time through, probably the most difficult part of the game when you don't have any prior knowledge of it.

A lot of your problems seem to come from the control system. The entire game is built around that control system, it would be completely different if the controls were more 'friendly'. I never played the PS2 version but I can imagine the DualShock sucking absolute balls for RE4, you should maybe give it a try on the GC (or Wii if you can), the control system is ideal for the GC controller.

A few tips to help you get past the first bit so you can hopefully evaluate the game more fully:

Leave the shotgun, picking it up activates the Chainsaw Baghead Dude (I think). I'm not entirely sure but I believe you either have to kill X amount of bad guys or last out a certain amount of time before they all go away, grab some ammo and find a place where you can bottleneck them. Then proceed to keep killing, headshots are good.

I don't mind a slow (relatively) paced shooter. It's the clumsiness that bugs me. It is far too unintuitive for me to get into. I may well be good once you get used to it.

BTW how do you get passed the chainsaw guy, incase I decide to give it another try.

I found the control to be incredibly intuitive. But then again, you played on the PS2 version. The game was made for GC.

Shoot him in the head until he dies.

I must be wrong then :-(. You don't have to face the chainsaw guy I know that for a fact. he must only appear if you step into a certain area of the town or something.

Here this is a bollocks guide written by some 8 year old at Gamefaqs:

As you walk down the path, the option to "Look" will appear. Zoon in using
the C stick with your Binoculars. Now approach the village, slowly to avoid
being seen. You will be able to walk in and take the path on your right
without alerting them. Along this path on your right is a small stone
structure with two crates. Now try to get back to the entrance without beind
seen. Just before you come into the village there is a fork. Take the left
path, examine the logs on your left beside the cabin to find a 'Green Herb.'
Walk forward a bit, you still shouldn't have alerted them at this point.
Enter through the door of the next cabin you see, the door should be facing in
your direction. Inside the house, smash the barrel. Break the crates on the
table as well. To get the rest of the stuff you'll inevitably be seen.

Leave the house and go Northwest to near where the woman is forking some hay.
Smash the neary crate. Continue North and follow the path to the central area
of town. At the North, where you should be, on the left is a large tower with
a ladder inside. Climb up it and pick up the 'Shotgun Shells (10).' Now run
around to the East side, on a cart behind one of the houses you'll find a 'Red
Herb,' and to the South you'll find a crate. Now enter the house South of the
bell tower and watch the scene. Run to the right and push the shelf in front
of the window. Behind the stairs are two barrels you can break open, also
pick up the 'Handgun Ammo (10)' on the shelf behind them. By now they have
probably broken through the door. Climb the stairs and pull the 'Shotgun' off
the wall. There's '1000 Ptas' on the shelf upstairs, also break the cabinet
glass and pick up the 'Hand Grenade.' On the bed at the other end are
'Shotgun Shells (5).' Examine the window and choose "Knock Down" to keep
villagers from climbing into the window. Jump out the side window, beside the
table onto the roof. Follow the outer walkway around to the other side of the
house you were just in to find a 'Spinel' on the roof. Now your only task is
to continue killing villagers until you've killed enough, and enough time
passes. Try and kill the chainsaw man, he'll drop something nice. Watch the
scene afterward.

OK I have decided to give this game another try. I might try and get the GC version if I can get it cheap enough.

Does anyone else feel gripes about how you aim in this game it's like he (Leon?) is fighting against you.

GET the GC if you can! Better experience. i got the Chainsaw controller which is sweet too.

CHAINSAW GUY

in that VERY beginning to the near 18 hour game....you can enter most of the buildings. in one of the begin buildings near the pit of fire there is a shotgun. you will know it is the right building cause a cut scene will start. go up the stairs and get the shotgun behind the glass.

or

During that event, don't go in the building and DON'T run down the path. There are TWO ways to activate the chainsaw dude...the house or going down the path. Stay clear of both places and you just have to fight a bunch of Ganados that have pitch forks and hatchets that they THROW. but if you get the aim down (on GC/PS2 version there is a small red laser point vs. Wii's huge circle eliminating difficulty), you can shoot the hitchets down in the air which is sweet!

The Ps2 Version is probably the worst. Just get a Wii and buy the Wii or gamecube game. I had the same problem the first time I got into the village. Just go left, kill the woman then always stay keep distance from the villagers and kill them. After a while theyll leave.
