About Me
I love all genres but 2D platformers will always be my favorite. A lot of great new games have come out in the recent times, but I honestly don't believe anything will ever top the SNES years. I grew up a loyal Nintendo fanboy, but (like many) realized the error of my ways too late with the passing of the Dreamcast. I miss the days when gaming was for geeks only, and anxiusly await (with both hope and dread) for the next generation of gaming...

E3 Revelation: Gamers Nintendo died with the N64
Brando | 12:19 PM on 07.18.2008 28 comments

All the controversy surrounding Nintendo's lackluster E3 announcements helped me to search my soul and discover the startlingly truth. The Nintendo I had grown up with died with the decline of the Nintendo 64.

The N64 brought so many of Nintendo's beloved IP's to the 3D world in a grand fashion (Mario, Zelda, F-Zero, Starfox to name a few). Not only that, but it library was heaping with fresh new IP's (Smash Brothers, Paper Mario, Mario Golf, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing, all the Rare games, etc). And then we come to the last truly great Nintendo game, Majora's Mask.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is the perfect Nintendo game in my mind. They took the established formula from Ocarina and what did they do? Did they add funky cel-shaded graphics and dumb down the gameplay? Did they add gimmicky motion or stylus controls? Did they rip off the SNES version with a light/dark world and tack on a lame werewolf transformation complete with much easier puzzles and combat? No, they did not. They did what every true Nintendo gamer would want. Nintendo made it much harder, more intricate, expansive, engaging, and fresh without any apologies.

This was not a game that held your hand. If you didn't play Ocarina, you were at a severe disadvantage. It's time travel plot device was not a gimmick. It weaved a beautiful ground-hog day esque story that has yet to be rivaled by any other Nintendo game. It broke the rules. From the mask collecting to the diary, everything about this game was brilliantly innovative and challenging without being dumbed down. Unfortunately, this was the last time we'd see such greatness from Nintendo.

So along came the Gamecube. There was nothing really innovative about it, except perhaps its size. Not even a Mario launch game. Lugi's Mansion had a great atmosphere but it's gameplay was terribly repetitive and easy. Then finally came Mario Sunshine. The Captain Planet gameplay, while innovative and somewhat challenging, lacked the pure fun of Mario 64 (by a long shot). Then came all the rehashing of the N64's new IPs. All the new Mario sports, Party, Kart, Paper, Starfox, Smash Bothers, F-Zero, etc had prettier graphics for sure, but did not really innovative or challenge in any way. Sure there were a few exceptions (Wave Race), but this was generally the rule of thumb. And new Ips? Pikmin was great, and of course the Metroid Prime series was brilliant, but that was about it.

Also, like the Nintendo 64, the Gamecube got two Zelda's. Wind Waker was an abortion. Not because of the graphics (I actually liked them) but because of the fact that's its only innovation, sailing, was boring as shit. Not only that, but I was able to handily beat it in less than three days without dying once. And with the Gamecube's dying breath/Wii birth came Twilight Princess. At last, I thought, maybe there was some hope yet. Hardly. While leaps and bound better than Wind Waker, TP did nothing for me. The puzzles? Easy. The combat? Super easy? The whole wolf thing? Not nearly as fun as the mask system. Innovations? Zero. Story? Boring and predicable. At least it took me a solid week to fully complete. And with that, came a whole new era of suckiness.

Nintendo has forgotten about us, and the Wii is proof. The recipe for a great Nintendo game contained the following ingredients: Fun, challenge, freshness, innovation, and accessibility. With the Wii, Nintendo has thrown out the first three, and overdosed on the last two. Oh, and replace innovation with gimmicky. There is nothing great about the Wii. It has rehashed, and dumbed down all my favorite games. Mario Galaxy is perhaps the closest it came but for me, it still couldn't quite rekindle the magic . I'm sick of waving my hands around like a loon. I'm sick of losing at party games because of randomness. I'm sick of seeing junk innovations in control and not gameplay. Fuck accessibility, fuck Nintendo. Give video games back to the gamers. /rant

The Gamecube is probably the most well made system Nintendo ever made other than the SNES. It was the N64 and the decline of third party devs that screwed everything up. So Nintendo changed their strategy and are doing ridiculously well for themselves. Don't say "fuck Nintendo", they said that to themselves long ago.

Except this isn't a HATEZ NINTENDO blog, this a well thought out and well written blog explaining his sentiments on why he's pissed at Nintendo.

So GTFO heretic, don't you have another worthless joke blog to post?

Agreed on this 100% btw.

Good points. I never finished Twilight Princess. I was looking forward to it until I actually played it. I never really felt invested. The graphics were kinda cool but the game itself was, like you said, just not innovative.

I guess you could say the Wii is innovative, but in a different way. I wouldn't say its bad or good, it just... is. I play on the 360 now while my Wii slowly gathers dust.

Personally I thought the Gamecube was sort of a throwback to the SNES, as it was a more traditional system. However, unlike a traditional system it lacked the horsepower and storage space (of a full sized DVD) to truly make it a competitor, and thus more viable in the eyes of 3rd party developers.

While I agree that Nintendo's consoles aren't very good (I didn't even like the N64), you can't deny that they are the undisputed champions of the portable game. I love my nintendo DS. Loved my GBA, loved my Gameboy Color, and my Fatboy.

I must be the only guy who enjoyed the sailing in Wind Waker.
I dont think that the puzzles have become dumbed down, I think its just that you've played so many Zelda games that they've become predictable. But I have noticed that enemies inflict less damage though. But there should've been more dungeons though, and instead of numerous small islands, there should've been fewer and bigger ones instead.

Gamecube may have its flaws, but I think its a great system!
They should've included DVD player though, as most of the people I know bought PS2 and Xbox over the Gamecube because of DVD support. And the capacity of the 8cm discs also gave the Gamecube a severe disadvantage over its competitors.
But other than that, I think the Gamecube is a decent system in terms of horsepower and first party exclusives.
Too bad it didnt have any online support though (with the exeption of Phantasy Star Online), and that it still had lackluster third party support (but still an improvement over the N64).

I can agree that they're screwing up big time with the Wii. Sure we hardcore gamers are a minority, but they still need us! Many of the Wii purchasers bought the Wii because we where spreading the word. Nintendo has the perfect opportunity to introduce new people to gaming here, but they are throwing it away! Many of us became gamers after experiencing great games such as Super Mario Bros and Zelda. But Wii Sports is not gonna do the same thing! Nintendo needs to bring out great core games, and quick!

When I hated on the Wind Waker, I do so in the context of the Zelda series. As a stand alone game, its good but in the series in one of the worst IMHO (phantom hourglass takes that honor).

I agree with your wholeheartedly. I loved (and still own) my N64 while I sold off my GameCube ages ago for a PS2 and now my Wii gathers dust while my copy of TP has never even been opened and Mario Galaxy sits half complete.

Wait, did you just suggest F-Zero for the Gamecube didn't challenge, while Wave Race on Cube was an exception to Nintendo's lack of innovation that generation?

I'd have to disagree with you on Wind Waker. Granted it was extremely easy, but it captured the atmosphere of adventure brilliantly. The end battle with Ganon is so dramatic and is a great climax to the game.
Besides I liked the Sailing. It was having to change the wind direction that was annoying.

I see your points, and for the most part it saddens me to say I think you're right. I've still got my N64, although I don't play much at all. The cube was great, but had the shortest damn life span ever. The only console I really play now is my 360, and thats because it has the best 1st and 3rd party spread at the moment.

I think its more of a case of the changing of heads at NoJ, that has tipped things in an odd way. This might explain why Wii came out with such dismal 512mb onboard memory.

512mb might have been okay back in the N64 days, but at present it lacks forethought for game developers outside of Nintendo, and was always gonna come back to haunt them.

Even GC should have been better than it was, again with no online plan thought out and supported properly, Nintendo didn't seem to care about it. Indeed a strange thing when Nintendo make most of their money outside japan.

The reason MS and Sony tend to succeed is due to a lot of their forward thinking and younger staff, where ideas can be shared and tried out. While Nintendo might do the same, they don't do it enough or perhaps enough of those ideas don't get used. I do think the curse of the stubborn salary man will forever hold Nintendo back.
