MW2 Petition - On the brink of 100K sigs
Boomsling | 7:32 AM on 10.20.2009 48 comments

I stated on a previous blog entry that I wouldnt sign as I did think that they would achieve anything of significance, I've gladly been proved wrong.

100,000 x £35.00 = 3.5 MILLION nett loss in sales.(based on a £35.00 per copy)

I love you internet.

Signed

P.S The banner self updates with the current amount of signatures, clicking on it also take you to the petition. ( I stole the banner from some IW forums, thanks to whoever made it)

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Talk about pie in the face. I think Infinity Ward is pretty pathetic to not have even responded yet. Many say petitions don't work but how else are we going to make our presence know? If we just "don't buy the game" without being vocal about it the impact won't be as great.

Looking at the rate people are signing up I reckon that in about 2.5 hours from now it will hit the 100,000 mark.

I'm very impressed with the MW2 community. I didn't think the petition would gain any traction. I'll sign it to support 'em, even though I don't plan on buying MW2.

yea its bigger then mw2, the fact is the multiplayer on consoles (have 260 and ps3 so stfu fanboys) is pathetic in comparison to pc gaming online, its streamlined to make it easier on the companies wallets and somehow these 12 yr olds who never experienced anything other then it think the companies are doing them some favor by dumbing down their games.

i for one would rather not have a dumb downed game, i guess this goes hand in hand with the fact im not a little kid. and this is just the start, not only is gaming in general 10x more of a hand holding experience now a day with every game being so puppet stringed and linear and easy, but this is just the start of the end of programmers making real online systems.

anyone who likes matchmaking is an idiot, i use it all the time on consoles, 9/10 times you end up with a bunch of idiots who are obnoxious and not who you want to play with, 9/10 times its not the mode you want to play. and its just a pathetic attempt at an online system.

take a look at a free game like quake live, its online capabilities blow away any of the 60 dollar games on xbox live, yet these programmers dont care and make their online better.. why? because a bunch of idiotic 12 yr olds arent gonna know the diffrence.

love how you all like being kept in the dark.

Well, I'm not sure that 100,000 signatures equals 100,000 lost sales -- people talk all the time about boycotting Activision. People perceive signing petitions like these as empty, hassle-free things that can do to support their "cause," but I'd be willing to bet that a lot of them will still be picking up MW2.

But maybe I'm just cynical.

But, even if all 100,000 people refused to buy the game, how does that result in a 3.5 million pound loss in revenue? You have to assume that most of that goes to Activision and to distributors and to marketing, etc. I don't know if Infinity Ward or Activision came down with the decision to axe dedicated servers, but you should make sure who, exactly, you're boycotting.

That being said, I refuse to use Xbox Live's matchmaking system -- I only play with friends, anyway. I can see why so many people are upset about the move. Good luck to you.

im not being a dickhead, check out the other blog on this site about the same topic, i posted on there aswell so dont worry. but the fact is noone cares about being a smart consumer, especially not these little kids who are just spending mom and dads money, the most important thing to them is having the "cool" game that everyones playing, doesnt matter if that game/developer/and microsoft are throwing gaming in the shitter for the rest of us.

I'm upset with you deciding you can be rude in a place that never warranted it. See, it would be rude of me to go farther than that and say you must be some closet nerd who has no social skills to just blurt that out for no good reason. However to say you're being a dick is rather justified and fair. The truth doesn't hurt when you're just inept.

Learn your context. Kids like fads, yes. Kids don't care about smart choices, yes. Nobody here is a kid, and we're in fact quite intelligent for the most part. Nobody here needs that "Darn kids, back in my day" mentality, though. You just make PC gamers look like a bunch of defensive jackasses. People can communicate themselves respectfully and intelligently without coming off like that, they just don't want to because it's harder.

Like I said in the front page post; anyone who doesn't realize how much of a travesty this is needs to ask a PC gamer friend.

Seriously, taking away mod support/ded servers is JUST like Activision telling console owners they can't have achievements/trophies, or some other huge mechanic that console players have known and loved for years.

No mod support for Half Life? Yea, Counter Strike would have never been made. No mod support for Warcraft III? Yea, no DotA. Wake up guys!

^ would be plenty of reason for me to be a dickhead to someone, read the article and comments, its not like im punching someone in the head im just argueing the other side of this.

secondly, like ive already said, i have a point, and it is an attempt to keep this shitty excuse for online away from every platform, ps3 and 360 stand no chance, and pc has a small chance.. im just being vocal about it because i havent paid much attention in the past 10 years, now that im 27 and a little more settled in im getting back into gaming because the wifey has me pretty much on lockdown most of the time, anyhow gaming has gone in the shitter big time, and im just expressing my distain.

you on the other hand, just having nothing else to do but try and prove you are smart to someone who could give 2 shits, your comments arent even based on the blog and have nothing to do with them, i can see you dont like the way im acting or the way i express myself.. get use to it its the internet, if i can deal with the horde of mindless idiotic shit on here then you can deal with me bitching about something that acctually has a point and reason.

On topic: I dont really care, and IW probably doesn't either. Internet petitions are neat and all, but rarely seem to have any lasting effect. A company will do what they want.

Off topic: Deadaim, I have to side with WryGuy on this one. Your whole first post was filled with insults to people who didn't share your view. You have your right to an opinion, but try to keep it constructive. Grammar and punctuation do wonders to help make your point seem valid. These actions make DToid a better community, and someone who comments during lunch(ish...maybe its just my time zone) clearly likes the community aspect of it. Also, just throwing it out there, to complain about someone being off topic is itself off topic...

not trying to win and popularity contests or grammar awards.

i signed up like an hour ago, normally dont even post shit and first time ever coming to this specific site.

point is, IW is just laying down the stepping stones for an inferior online setup to become the standard on pc, im already super pissed about what has become of consoles, games on my ps2 had better online lobbies and setups then any game that has come out on xbox live to this date.

and here they are, cockily if i might add, telling pc gamers to get the lube out and get ready basically. i dont know about the rest of you but but its not hard to see whats happening, its not just the downgrade and service we will be receiving with a "console" multiplayer setup, its the fact we will eventually be forced to sign up and pay extra fees just to play games online, i.e. xbox live.

look at what money and shady developers have already done, epic games.. one of the greats.. well they use to be, their games are rather pathetic nowadays, look at gears of war, you cant even play it on pc without an xbox live membership.

why am i upset about the possibility of having to pay for a shittier service? idk take a guess

@phazon , from my experience they do, but ive only seen 3 so far..

diablo 3 petetion = developers responded and took notice, i believe the game will have a more darker/gothic feel to it because of that petetion.

left4dead petetion = definetly lit a fire under valves ass to finish up their dlc for left4dead and it got a personal response from gabe newell.

and this petetion, its already 100k large.. even it it doesnt shake the offices of IW, it lets them know that 100k people think their decision is bullshit and even it doesnt effect the console sale numbers, this will definely affect the pc sales numbers

Deadaim, I don't think anybody here disagrees with you -- a lot of people think that dedicated servers are a much better option than matchmaking. We get that. What WryGuy is upset about (and I agree with him) is stuff like this:

"anyone who likes matchmaking is an idiot,

why? because a bunch of idiotic 12 yr olds arent gonna know the diffrence.

love how you all like being kept in the dark."

A lot of us here play online on our consoles and we certainly don't like being lumped in with the "idiotic 12 yr olds" who "like being kept in the dark." Those exist, but, for the most part, it's not us.

All I'm saying is that before you start throwing insults around, you keep your audience in mind. Most of the people reading this blog are pretty informed -- no need to treat us otherwise.

Anyway, if you just signed up an hour ago, welcome!

and like i said im not here to win a popularity contest, but if those few lines are what has you upset this site must be rather tame.

i did say idiot, and i did say idiotic.. but arent vulgar.. not sure exactly how people are taking offense to me saying they are keeping themselves in the dark...

im not lecturing anyone that agrees with me, there are plenty of people on the net and on this site that strongly disagree with me, and those are the people im insulting

'kay, I'm a PC gamer. The first platform I ever played was the PC, and to be quite frank, Activision can go blow a load for their idiotic decision for MW2's online. But, you're not making PC gaming look terribly good here.

And your 'proof'? Diablo 3 petition: Completely ignored. No art change style whatsoever, and the developers even made some hilarious jabs at the 'cause' with 'new' Diablo 3 (now with unicorns!) screenshots. L4D2 petition. Correlation does not mean causation, the whole boycott was stupid in any case. I know they like taking credit for the DLC for L4D, but it's very likely Valve would of released it around the same time-frame in any case.

@brainderailment
In terms of people's opinions voiced on various boards like GAF, this is actually the most prevalent and significant petition I've seen in some years.

For instance, I've historically bought 2 copies of the Call of Duty games: one for PC, and one for console. I'll be skipping out on the PC version this time.

There are thousands out there who share that viewpoint. Like I said, if Activision took away achievements, there's be thousands of 360 fans who would legitimately boycott the game: well, this is a thousand times worse, as competitive play is essentially ruined, which accounts for tens of thousands of PC gamers.

Destructoid has a higher standard. "Deal with it, it's the internet" doesn't fly here because we care about what happens to this place. It's like a second family to a lot of people. It doesn't matter how tame it was, if you're being insulting eventually someone is going to call you out on it because we like to keep this place as respectable as we can.

You don't get to just insult people because they disagree with you here. People here will start calling you out and if it goes on long enough or gets bad enough you'll just get banned.

You totally are nerd raging too. It doesn't matter if another nerd is telling you that you're nerd raging. He's a nerd, but you're raging and it's over nerdy stuff. Is being a nerd necessarily bad? No, but if the shoe fits.

@ rimoonlight, 2 arguements here, one about what IW is doing, which you apparently agree is wrong. and the second is about the effectiveness of petetions.. you seem to be kind of mixing the two IMO.

regardless, the petetion for diablo 3 wasnt completely ignored, while i personally didnt care for the petetion because i trust the people making diablo 3 to deliver, it did infact hit their radars even as you refrenced they joked about it, but the truth is like i said "i think" it will have an effect and diablo 3 will be a darker game in the end because of it.

and as far as this petetion, the developers have already responded and tried to calm everyones fears, you can find this @ kotaku.com, its obviously hit their radar and has an effect.

idk what people would rather, if you have a problem with something just stfu and deal with it? thats how things got this way in the first place, to many people just eat buy play whatever is shoved in their face, maybe thats why i have such a hard time finding a good game, honestly codmw is a piss poor game imo and im sure the second will be more of the same.. all the game is, is sitting in windows and camping.. doesnt do it for me but its easier so its alot more popular then a fps game that requires skill, but rather then being part of the problem, id rather play a game with a much smaller community then deal with playing a game that takes no skill, just to be with the masses.

and yes this is getting off topic but so is every post on this blog so far

Actually, I didn't call you a social outcast. I said it would have been rude for me to insult your social skills, in the same way you've been rude to insult other people without knowing. And you are a nerd, deal with it. You're on a video game website arguing with people about internet petitions. That's not an insult, that's just the truth.

If you want me to say something on topic, then sure. Your examples of internet petitions working aren't conclusive, as someone else already pointed out. The Diablo example really is a bad one because Blizzard was publicly mocking the petition. Petitions don't work in the company doesn't want to listen to them, and they rarely do. Activision isn't the kind of company to back down to its customers.

I applaud everyone getting together in these kind of numbers for a petition because it's really unheard of, but it won't make a serious impact on Activision. 100,000 lost sales isn't actually a lot considering the game we're talking about, and that Activision is looking to increase the prices of the game on PC. If normally there's only a 5 dollar profit on a PC game, if they raise the price to increase their profit then those lost sales may not matter very much. Especially because Modern Warfare will probably exceed sales of 5 million.

What's more right now we really could just have 100,000 bluffs. We won't know how seriously this is going to impact anything until the game comes out and we see if anyone really does by the PC version.

1. the petetion is/did work.

2. you bringing up a post of mine that was like 10 posts after your post, using it as your defense? makes no sense.

3. im not a nerd, a nerd is someone who has no life, geek in school, likes star trek, hangs out on internet gaming sites every day all day etc., i could sit here and make fun of how much of a nerd you are but am i? no, i could sit here and explain how im at my desk at my office and how much money i make, how hot my wife is and how much my life kicks ass.. but you would just simply compare it to your nerdy life and assume im probably lying.

the definition for nerd can change thats for sure, and yea i do like alot of nerdy things, like argueing with dipshits like you online.. but i know what a nerd is, and im far from it. no comic collections, no online subscriptions, no online friends, etc etc. you apparently want to continue to take this off topic.. but if you want to know what a nerd is take a look in the mirror.

Listen to yourself man. You're 27? Stop spitting venom at everybody who doesn't tell you what are legend you are for saying how stupid and childish they are.

You are never going to affect anybody by insulting them. You are only going to disconnect them from what you are trying to say. It DOESN'T HELP!

The people here have done nothing but welcome you and offer alternate arguments about the way you conduct yourself in the community, and you've done nothing but fire back about how they fail at life, about how "you've met people like them before", and about how this place is "tame".

There is a solid community here, and they are people who know and love videogames, like you; just check out blogs like Yojimbos. There has been a recent influx of users here at dToid, which resulted in a lot of fanboys and young kids joining the community. Yes, they are annoying, but damn man, we were all that age once.
