You might have a defective disc, or several. If the disc is dirty or dusty it could be blocking the lens, in which case you'd have a to find a Microsoft approved way of cleaning it (you aren't supposed to use lens cleaners). If it happens mainly on FFXIII then I'd say you got a defect disc, which happens from time to time with any optical media. Also if it was exposed to any pressure or abnormal amounts of heat (such as being left in a car) it could have warped the disc slightly, which would cause DRE's. Optical media is a fickle mistress, the slightest inconsistency can ruin everything.
The game pretty much went from the shop to my Xbox within 15 minutes so I can't see environmental conditions having an impact.
But yeah, each Xbox would play FF once but afterwards wouldn't play anything, as a consumer im a little confused as to what my rights are as theres no way I can afford two new xboxs but theres also no way to prove the disk broke them both, Is there?
Am I just stuck here between a rock and a hard place?

Hmmmm...try calling the Microsoft Xbox service department, take a deep breath and just power through to get some answers. To have 2 consoles break at almost the exact same time is too much of a coincidence to me. If they can't help you, I think it might somehow be the disk. Good luck with this, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be.
You may have already, but you should check another game on the systems. Make sure it is only a problem with XIII and not all games before you make a claim.
Yep checked another game/dvd/cd, nothing works at all. Kinda wish I had just listened to everyone else and bought it for my PS3, I only got it for the 360 so I could play through it with a mate. Im gonna go to the store I bought the game from as I no the manager and see if he has any idea as to my right as the consumer. (surely I should not have to pay for repairs if another product has done this to my console and it can be proved?)
Play through it with a mate? Ummm... despite the FFXIII bundle having two controllers, it's still a single player game.
You know what I mean, when I say play through it together I mean play it at the same time on two different consoles over Xbox live and try to beat each other, it adds a competition element to the game. Also I like having multiple disks though im not sure why. Anyway I have spoken to the retailer who I purchased the game from and have given them my 360 and the game, they are going to contact the centre where they received the game and determine who is liable, it will most likely be me.
