Will Nintendo ever get its respect back?
BlindsideDork | 9:54 AM on 09.18.2007 51 comments

Hmmmm...good question. A lot of people said they lost it back in the N64 days. Others probably would say GameCube days. Why did they lose it? Is it for pushing quality titles like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, GoldenEye007, WCW: World Tour, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, or Rogue Squadron or was it something else? Can they get it back? CAN THEY?!

Nintendo introduces a new way to play. A way to get you that more into gaming. This is honestly one step closer to virtual reality or PS9 in 2078. But it was immediately written off as gimicky. Is it gimicky cause Nintendo did it or just cause the idea? Either way, they can't win. Cause this new way to play is easy for anyone and therefore attracts nongamers to play, causing haters/competition/others to call it a "casual" console.

Nintendo has been known for its franchises. Everyone says, "I am tired of all the Mario 238902 rehashes." There is a lot of them but they have also been around for over 20 years. You are telling me if Halo was released 20 years ago there would still only be three or four Halo titles? C'mon! And look at Final Fantasy, they are up to 12 but with 20823 FF7 spin offs. But neither of these two franchises get as much flack as Mario, Link, and Samus does. And for the most part (besides recent Link console games) have been pretty different. Are you going to tell me that Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, & 3 are identical and all the same? Why is Nintendo the only one really being hit with this?

These franchises also don't feature blood and gore, which apparently makes it a kiddy game and in turn a kiddy console Yes, there are some kiddy games on the Wii and GameCube and such, but guess what...Surf's Up is on the 360. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is on the PS2. Resident Evil 4 is on the Wii. They have mature games and developers are making mature games for the Wii and DS. Games like Manhunt 2, ObsCure 2, No More Heroes, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, and more are set to come out for the Wii, all of them being M-Rated. Does this make Nintendo's Wii less kiddy? Not having an M-Rating on a game does not make it any less mature. I found Metroid Prime (first one) to be incredibly deep and involving and didn't really see how a kid could play that game. Is it not mature just cause it has a Teen rating?

I don't mean to point fingers but I can't help it. IMO, I think part of this whole kiddy image came from the came of Microsoft. I know that nowadays they almost blatantly say that it is for casual-goers or kids, but it seems like back in the day they mentioned it subtlely, even before things had really kicked off. That and with MS' money backing them, it probably wouldn't be too hard to persuade some people developing their "mature" games for the Cube.

Now to the latest issue. Online gaming. Nintendo has embraced online gaming. You might not think so but they put Wi-fi into their system! The 360 has no such thing. And originally only the high-end PS3 model did. Same goes for their handheld device the DS. It was there from the get go, revving up. They even had downloadable content the first week the Wii was released. You could download games. But is that good enough? NO. Screw you Nintendo for letting us download games that we might have or might not have played before from pretty much the beginning of your console. Instead of being like, "sweet, games I can download," people were like, "why can't I play games online yet?" The DS didn't have online play until a year after its release with Mario Kart and I can't help but think that that wasn't a huge deal.

People compare it to the MS' Xbox Live. Well I have some news for you people. XBL was released a full year after the Xbox was released. MS is also a SOFTWARE (for computers) based company, meaning they have more experience with online components. So not only did MS had that year to get the kinks out, they also had three years to get it ready for the 360's release. Sony started their online dabbling during the PS2 era with games like SOCOM. Their beast is still growing.

Besides a VERY brief stint with Phantasy Star Online, Nintendo has had little to no online gaming experience under its wing. So they develop a system that protects people from others they don't know (you cannot say that you want to talk to EVERYONE on XBL, The Master Baiter DJ Duffy?) and release their first online game in about 6 months after being online and you complain? It is one on one and you can't talk. It is Pokemon, do you really want to hear all the little kids whine? I know I am tired of the little kids on XBL. But don't think of this as me sticking up for Friend Codes, I am not a fan of them but they are what they are and recognize where they are coming from.

Now more and more games are being announced with online play. Ghost Squad, NiGHTS, Battalion Wars 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii are among some of the ones said to have online play. Aren't these some pretty heavy hitters? Oh yeah, all these games but Mario Kart are suppose to come out this year. Will this help get some respect for Nintendo? I mean having four online games come out on top of the other two that are already out after only a year of being in the online business? Isn't that good? Is that enough?

Nope, I can already hearing your whining and complaining..."but there is no voice chat supported!" Yeah, it sucks but take what you can get. Did XBL have voice chat from day one? Maybe, I don't know but this is definite proof that they are heading in the right direction.

If it wasn't for the Big N, we wouldn't have video gaming or at least it wouldn't be anywhere where it is now. That alone should make you at least give it SOME respect. Even the folks from Silicon Knights said that if Too Human is a success, it is all cause what they learned from their days with Nintendo. If they can give a nod and the respect Nintendo deserves, why can't we?

Sadly, it's going to take a long while for Nintendo to shake their "kiddy" image. No matter what they push out, no matter how intense some Wii games might be, people will still bitch and complain. It's nature.

Actually, Live did have voice chat from day one. I can't remember if it was for every game or not, but it did have voice chat. The original disk came with the headset and MotoGP.

They really should have at least given the option to have voice chat, or do like Sony and enable Bluetooth headsets. I don't see why they couldn't do that.

nintendo has always been the big dog, and you could argue that the inclusion of blood in the genesis release of MK, while nintendo opted for the bloodless release is when they started being called the 'kiddy company'. they struck back by releasing MKII in all its gory glory, adn even jumped on the gory fighter bandwagon w/ killer instinct.

the reason gamers will bitch about nintendo's online system is because its flawed. the whole friend code thing is just bullshit. its basically limiting the number of available gamers there are for you to play with, where MS will match you with any member of the community.

yes MS will always kill it in the online arena, they are poineers of online applications and know how to maintain a server and build a platform better than anyone. nintendo makes great games and hardware, but they'll never be able to match the experience ms already has.

Nintendo is replacing the "kiddie" image with the "casual" image.

Reasons for Nintendo Hate:

1. Nintendo gets alot of shit because of third party games!

2. No new franchises!

3. Console design.

Any REAl gamer has respect for Nintendo. Even if you don't like it's product line, while that's fair enough, none of the systems that exist today WOULD exist had the NES been a failure.

As long as they push out more party games and such, they will still be labled "kiddie". Even though some of the most oddball (Killer 7), and violent (RE4) games came out for the gc, most people saw it as "the kid system" due to platformers, party games and the like. It's just natural to automatically label it "kid friendly", even though some games come out under the radar to the masses of adult gamers.

Games systems would have still existed even if the NES did fail. They would most likley be in different forms. I respect the old Nintendo not the new.

Steretypes get placed and often take years to remove not matter what happens. Unless Nintendo's next massive massive massive hit is "Kill, Destroy, Blood Letting, Death Time" the image isn't going to change any time soon.

As for internet I agree and can't wait to the online is more robust.

First off, I have always been a huge Nintendo fan. I actually exclusively bought Nintendo systems, I geuss that made me a fanboy. Since finally looking at it objectively, I really prefer the XBox.

About XBox Live. I find it far superior to other online platforms. On the features Nintendo lacks in comparison you state:
it sucks but take what you can get
No thanks. I don't want to settle, just because Nintendo has impressed me in the past.

On being kiddy systems. Yeah, overall, I have to say Nintendo is much more family-friendly. I think they try to get a few M rated games on there so we can use them as examples "Hey, RE4 is on Wii! Manhunt 2 is on Wii! We're not kiddy!" I agree they are finally making progress in this area. Friend codes is another example of this. They implemented a pain-ni-the-ass solution to a problem. Why? To protect the kids. You said yourself you didn't like the friend codes. Once agin, I don't want to settle just because I used to love Nintendo.

On waggle. Personally, I think it was a great little innovation. It can be fun, but in the end, that's not how I want to game. I just prefer a classic controller. This isn't a knock against Nintendo, I just don't personally enjoy it. It was inevitably labelled as a gimmick because the system lacked power, and that was it's main draw/focus.

On the fanchises. I hate it when anything goes over 2 sequels. I would much prefer a new IP over an old one any day. Nintendo banks on their franchises because they are damn good. I just wish that they would come up with some new ones equally as good I guess.

That's all I have for now. I don't hate the Wii, but I can't overlook some of it's flaws, and motion controls just aren't my thing. Thank god for VC though ;)

And don't mention "bank on their franchises" without mentiong Halo's Xbox (yes, I said it the right way).

Great post!

Depends on where they're looking to get respect from.

I think since the Wii has passed the Xbox 360 in sales, that Nintendo has gained their respect back from the general public. They're a pop culture phenomenon again. No I don't mean this or [url=http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/images/other/ad_nintendo_cereal_system.jpg] this[\url], but the average Joe Dumptruck on the street probably cares to know who they are again.

The only thing they had to do to gain it back was to abandon all their [url=http://www.slapyo.com/wp-content/NintendoNerdLord.jpg]loyal followers[\url], in favor of some hot Granny on Wii action.

But in order to get back the respect of the "hardcore gaming crowd", all they need to do is put out more games like Metroid Prime 3 and Hotel Dusk, which will come in time I think.

It works both ways. Any "real gamer" can have total respect for Nintendo. But then again, any "real gamer" can also totally hate Nintendo. Alot of people don't consider the Wii a video game console and some do. I don't think that's ever gonna change. It'd be nice if they got all their respect back, but who knows if it will ever happen.

The only thing that really bugs me about Nintendo these days is "Mario-themed sports title" and "Mario-themed collection of mini games". Those games can eat shit and die.

I'm really looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes, and Dragon Quest Swords. Those games can eat ambrosia and LIVE.

Blindside, I never said anything bad about their franchises. I think they have great franchises and do great things with them (almost every time) Like I said, this is coming from a guy that grew up on Nintendo. Maybe 'banking' was the wrong word to use?

I'm also not denouncing the system for any one reason, but overall, it's just not my type of console this time around. I still have to give props to Nintendo for a lot fo things, but they are just going in a different direction than my preference these days.

@Jack: Mario 64 would be a good game with or without Mario in it. It controlled smoothly, and it was fun. Mario is just their most recognizable icon, so he gets the starring role. As long as the game is fun, I don't give a damn that it's another Mario game.

Nice post. I'm not a fan of friend codes, but they don't really bother me that much either, mostly because I don't use them that often. Trying to get my friends together online sounds good, but in theory is very difficult since we all live in different cities and different time zones. When I do play online, I usually choose the rival or random options and am happy with that. As far as chat goes, it is needed. I had a friend visit my Animal Crossing Wild World town and it was awkward pausing the game to chat.

The VC is a godsend. I love being able to play old games using only 1 console - it keeps my entertainment center tidy. The motion controls will become incredible. They're decent currently, but I think developers need a little more time to learn how to use them - just like the DS touch screen.

I started buying Nintendo hardware exclusively after my original Playstation died. I made sure it was protected from dust and in a well-ventilated area, but it kicked the bucket after FFVII. To this day, I've not had any Nintendo hardware fail on me. I avoided the PS2 until late in its life as I was trying to avoid the DRE. MS cannot make reliable software, so I've never trusted their hardware and the red ring has proven my theory for me.

About respect - I don't know if Nintendo can gain it back. I have great respect for what they've done and are doing, but more and more gamers want Western games and Nintendo doesn't make those types games. Nintendo is a very Japanese publisher. No matter how great their games are or how innovative they try to be, people will always find a reason to hate.

Friend codes don't limit who you can play with. Every game I've played online, DS or Wii, has matched me up to anybody. Friend codes are only required to play..... friends. It has not hampered my ability to enjoy online games at all, since 95% of the time I'm playing with random people anyway.

And I have no problem with the amount mario sports games. The reason is quality. Mario Golf, Tennis, and Strikers are absolutely amazing games. Baseball and Hoops can go suck a dick.

PErsonally, I think Nintendo deserves MORE backlash because they are coming into the online game so late. They had the time and the resources available to learn from both MS' and Sony's mistakes and take cues from them. Their online mode should be modeled after the 360 and its implementation and not rely on being compared to the original Xbox just 'cause it's their first time really trying it.

They should have seen the necessities (like voice chat for example) and implemented them from day one. It should have been developed hand in hand with the console itself and it should have launched day one with the console. Anything less in this day and age deserves the backlash it garners.

It's like saying it's okay to purchase a car without an airbag or seatbelt or power steering just because it's a company's first try at making a car. There are things consumers have come to expect and things we deserve. Plain and simple.

I hardly think you can compare the Wii's sub-par online offerings (convenience, not necessity) to a car lacking seatbelts and airbags (necessity)... Maybe compare it to a navigation system (convenience), which coincidentally makes your argument sound silly. Oops?

Seriously, we all know that Nintendo has some work to do with its online system. I personally think that they know this and intend to do something about it. For the time being though, stop bitching about it. If you don't like it, don't play. When they promise you something and then don't deliver, then bitch.

This was a good argument, and I agree with a lot of what you said. But the thing is.... Nintendo is seriously failing with their online stuff. The fact that Microsoft has been at it with online play longer than Nintendo means that Nintendo should be LEARNING from M$ and building their online service around it since it's successful. I'm not saying it has to be exactly the same, but c'mon! At LEAST let us simply register friend NAMES instead of long-ass streams of numbers...
