This weekend I couldn't find a good sickgame to play like I said last week. I suffered and slept until saturday afternoon when I got Legendary in the mail. Hooray, new game to play. It got bad reviews but how bad is it really? It can't be all that bad, can it? Since this isn't a formal review like I have done in the past but just a question of scores, I'll compare some scores. Since IGN is bold enough to give it a 2.5, I figure that should do nicely.
I was really caught off guard in the beginning. Not the first level but the title screen. Say what you will about the music (zomg! All hard music with guitars suck unless it is Hot Topicy Smashing Pumpkins!), but it actually got me excited for the game. And I figured I could use a challenge so I decided to play the game on Hard difficulty. I noticed that even on hard, I spent most of the beginning of the game running around with an axe saying weapons were pointless and harmless. And this was the case until mid episode 3 and against enemy soldiers. But once you get the "Assault/Sniper Rifle" you change your tune. It was this same episode that I came across the stupidest and one of the best achievements ever...
Yes, that one. If it doesn't accidentally get you, there is no way to get this achievement without dying. I wonder if it was a test to see how far achievement whores will go? Of course they could claim it was an accident as well.
I didn't notice too much of a challenge on Hard. There were only a few parts where I spent my time getting raped by werewolves, but besides them I didn't feel like it was "hard." So let's take off a point there. -1
Another lackluster feature here and there were the graphics. Some of the special effects and backgrounds looked quite amazing but then you saw character faces and some structures and thought the developers called in sick that day. Faces look really bad! But there are some good looking parts, since that is apparently a big issue to gamers these day, we will do a point and half. -1.5 Now there's the Gameplay which took a big hit at IGN. Apparently the use (or lack of use) of creatures was an issue. It is to the extent that you end up just fighting werewolves the whole time. There are six other creatures but they really aren't present much. But at least they spent a lot of attention to the werewolves. They may look like dried up flesh and bone but they can be a force to be reckon with. And amidst a battle, I couldn't help think how cool it was to have to worry about chopping the werewolves head off. Other games are usually just "shoot, shoot, shoot" until you kill it. This extra feature adds something more to it that definitely gives the game some potential. Now if only the creatures varied more.
Another sad note is your special powers. Once again it is lacking. You kill creatures and then you suck up their glowy stuff to either use on a device, to stun enemies, or heal yourself. It is a decent gameplay mechanic but it suffers from flaws. I am still not sure why mapping it to the Y button is a good idea. It is clearly something you use a lot and something that should be done while keeping mobile. If anything the left trigger or bumper should've been used for this button and the aim or sprint moved to the analog stick button since one of them doesn't do anything. It would make it much easier to manuever at times. Healing became a huge concern. You had to hold down the button to heal, but it would only work if you weren't around dropped glowy stuff. Perhaps having a button that straight heals/picks up stuff to put directly into your health would've been a better idea. Of course this doesn't help when you come across a long stretch of humans and are low on health. This sucks cause only creatures can give you health. Yeah, this potentially cool mechanic needs to go back to the drawing board to be ironed out. -0.5
Bring on the weapons! The first weapon you get is an Axe. Probably one of the most useful weapons in the game but it becomes outdated after while. Not by your first or second firearm cause the pistol and machine gun are awful. This game barely has more than Left 4 Dead. That's kind of bad considering it is a traditional FPS. But there is variety, well some. Pistol, Machine gun, assault/sniper rifle, shotgun, Heavy Duty machine gun, flamethrower, rocket launcher. Lastly there is the Desert Eagle, but during the campaign you are tricked into thinking it is a worthless pistol pistol laying around on the ground. And another problem is that the flame thrower and rocket launcher are brought into multiplayer. Multiplayer is something else. Unfortunately you have one mode but at least it is something interesting and kind of fun. It plays off the magic powers. You split up in teams and werewolves run around as well. You kill the werewolves to get glowy stuff which you can either use to heal yourself or fill up your machine. First one to fully fill the machine wins. It works nicely until one of their players always chases me up into my base and shoots me in the back every single time! Another downfall is that if you set the density of creatures to low, they only spend their time on one team's side of the map making it harder for the other team to get points. It is actually a fun mode that is only hindered by only four maps to choose from and the fact that it is harder than your mom to get a full game going. -0.5
What else is there to bring this game down? Story? Well it is a bit cliche with the secret societies wanting the box but that is understandable in a game like this, no biggy. At least it isn't about some space marine fighting aliens. It is true, there isn't much reason to play the game a second time through (unless you are an achievement whore). But did this game really deserve a 2.5? By my calculations, looks like a 6.5. It deserves a score around there, not much more though. I dont understand how this game could get such a low score. I read there is slowdown, hitches, and texture issue...wrong and wrong. I came across ZERO slowdown, the only hitch/glitch I found is an occasional downed werewolves head was on the other side of a wall. And texture...well that comes the same people who marked Mega Man 9 down for being 8-bit. C'mon! I will say it made my 360 freeze four times, but that is hardware problem and not the game. I wonder if they didn't play a retail version cause there is NO WAY this game is a 2.5.
So why did it get this score? Was it cause it wasn't Gears of War or Resistance? Was it cause there was no Fallout here? Maybe the planet wasn't [little]big enough. The game wasn't horrible, but the game isn't necessarily good. It has/had a lot of potential and the multiplayer would be fun if you had some people to play it. If you want to play a FPS and something new, you could do a lot worse. What's funny is those same idiots gave Blacksite: Area 51 a 6.4 despite it having more problems then Legendary. Maybe they just don't like the [Game]cock?

I believe they took the review down and posted an apology a day or two later, no word if the retard reviewer got fired. He actually wrote in a couple of places how it was rubbish compared to FIFA or Pro Evo.
I'm playing Turok right now and I'm having some of the most fun I've had this year. Technically the game sucks, the voice acting is horrible, the weapons are meh and the story is shit. But it has two things going for it, the knife and the animations. Both of those things make the game one of the most fun experiences I've had this year.
And yes that was sarcasm.
I might rent this or even buy it when it drops to 20.
