The feelings seem a bit half and half around here parts. That might not be true as it seems many people feel as if this new device is not worth it or "sucks" as one kind, gaming gentlemen put it
in his blog. But why so much hate?
Let's get the fairly obvious ones out of the way that most probably attribute to why it sucks.
The Battery Life
This used to be only a problem with the PSP. Now it is here to plague Nintendo's latest device. But that is what happens when you try to cram so much in a tiny device. Except with the reported
three to four hours of fun, isn't that less than the PSP? I was thinking about getting one of these DSi items since I am still playing my DSPhater (I put an extended battery on a DSPhat, hence the "-er") but the battery life is what might make me think twice. I can go weeks without charging my DS. I'd probably only be able to go a day with this one.
The Price
$180 (give or take) is a lot of money to spend on something you theoretically already have. I can't fathom buying another device that does the same thing you already are doing. Maybe if my DS/system died and I had no warranty but that is a stretch. That price isn't the final US price but it might be pretty darn close. Do you really want to spend that much on it?
The Camera
That's great, it has a camera! But wait, it only does 640x480? That's only VGA or 0.3 Megapixels. Don't cellphones have 2 Megapixel cameras standard? I can see them trying to sumo out the iPhone competition but when everyone already has a camera of better quality, what's the point? There are only two ways this camera would be useful as is: if it was a phone or it was used a DS game. The latter of the choices is probably going to happen. Nintendo will use that camera for a game and it will probably fun/amazing. I guess if they had a bigger megapixel, it would mean less battery time and/or the screen can only handle so much. Lame.
This last point is probably the main reason I can gather...
No GBA Slot
The funny thing about this is that the GBA was originally just tagged on to make sure people could play their old games while they tried this new, unproven device. Now that it is proven it will grow and the next iteration will have to eventually shy away from it. Looks like it is starting early. It was only a matter of time before it was removed. It is truly funny how many people are upset over the GBA slot missing. But then again if you want a GBA slot, just keep a DSPhat or DSLite.
I have to admit it though, that
Arkanoid DS Accessory is a downfall for no GBA slot but it was never released in the US so no biggie. And who actually plays Guiter Hero on their DS? The only other reason there is a need for a GBA slot is if you want to play illegal games. Perhaps Nintendo wants to cut back on DS piracy and this is the first step in the right direction?
I honestly don't play GBA games that often so it isn't a huge deal. And I could careless about the camera (although DS control does sound sweet) and music playing ability. Is there even controls on the outside of the DS for music playing? Who cares, I have an iPod for music/videos and a 7 megapixel digital camera for pictures. It would be nice to upgrade from my DSPhatter. But my main reason for hating the DSi is the battery life. It is the one thing I hate about my PSP. Hate having to recharged every few days.
So...why do you hate it?
I don't hate it, I just don't want it. I still need to upgrade to a DSLite.
No GBA Slot, I don't need a camera, I have an iPod.
Easy. Not enough cameras. I want all my gaming devices to have at least 5 different cameras on them.
No GBA slot? That's crazy. Bad Nintendo... Bad.
Like Pendelton, I'm really going to need at least a dozen cameras before this is worth it to me. It's not that the device sucks, I just see no reason for it to exist. We all already have iPods and digital cameras -- I just want it to play games in airplanes.
BUT! Since they nerfed the battery life and the GBA slot, it doesn't fulfill its core function (games) as well as its predecessors. So, I'll just use that $180 for something else.
I'm very interested in what the homebrew community is going to do with the SD card slot. Say... a GBA emulator for the R4 (or other similar device) that can read roms from the included microSD card AND the SD card.
Actually, it could be cool if they really nail down the DS WiiWare/VC downloader thing. But since Nintendo has a bad habit of cocking up its online functionality, I'm skeptical. Besides, my aRe4 already plays downloadable games.
When they let me download the golden sun series on to an SD card, I will upgrade from my DSlite. Not before.
Or pirate it onto an sd card.
don't hate it but it does make me sad
how in the Feck will I play My Boktai now
FECK!
I'd be surprised if Nintendo will let you boot from the SD slot, nixing the idea of a software-only R4.
But wait! You could use an R4 to flash the firmware and allow for booting from the slot that the R4 is NOT in! Genius!
Good points. Ridiculous update.
I think it's a cool update. As nintendo described this isnt to REPLACE the DS, it's a 3rd tear. It's just a different VERSION of the DS for a more MEDIA centered consumer. Don't get mad, you already have DS's so calm the fuck down. If you want one though, it's there.... CALM THE FUCK DOWN EVERYONE
Meh, I don't like it because it STILL has no legacy games support. And yes, I use the GBA slot(and not for piracy). The SD card slot sounds nice though, depending on how they use it.
And I already have a PSP w/custom firmware if I really want to emulate.
Side Note: had no idea that battery life was shortened liek that. Such a shame...
Let's not kid ourselves. This update is designed to take care of most of the non-pirate activities that people use R4s for. The hope is that piracy won't become even more widespread as a side effect of people who simply want media on their DSes.
I don't hate it, actually. I'll be buying one to replace my DS original, but I'm keeping both DSes, because each has its pros and cons.
I want one. Downloadable games, built in Opera, music, camera and it's small...besides more battery power, not much more you can ask for. Also I need more DSs for some Mario Kart action. If you really care that much about GBA games, go and find a Micro. They're cheap now and are well worth it.
It's not so much hate as "who the fuck cares?" But since I am a hater, here's the Top 5 Reasons I FUCKING HATE the DSi:
1) The same reason I hate the current DS, there hasn't been anything I've wanted to play on it since Advance Wars: Day of Ruin.
2) No GBA slot.
3) It costs more than a PSP while only adding features that I already get on my cellphone, assuming that I don't already have a standalone device that does the job better.
4) Shortened battery life.
5) No Enamel Navy.
Ok, why should I want a shitty camera on my DS?
Why should I want to play mp3 in my ds?
All of this and less battery life... it sucks, I liked the lite but this is just plain stupid, lets add stuff for the sake of adding stuff.
Hate? No, don't care about? Yes.
I already have a DS.
The Battery life is not that short at all. The DSL=15-16 hours on low brightness, this is 10-12hrs on low brightness. I don't suspect the screens lights to halve that. Why is there no source for this information?? I read on gonintendo, live blogging.
I don't hate it really, I just think it is really stupid because it feels more like a downgrade than an upgrade.
I suppose its because of the lack of GBA support, but it will have SD card so who cares? 10gb will be enough to cover the entire GBA library, trust me!
I've got my Lite and as I'm seeing it as long as I don't need a new one or the uncontrolable urge to buy things doesn't over take me I'll be playing it and waiting for the next portable device nintendo releases that plays a new type of game.
I don't know what's fucking wrong with people. "Oh no, they added new features! How dare they!" Also, if they already own a DS, why are they complaining? No one ever said you had to buy every new iteration of the system. Just don't buy it.
I think my only complaint is that it isn't beefy enough. I'd like better quality in every area, but it looks like I'll have to wait until a few generations down the road, at this point.
Like Kryptinite I could just really care less.
I'm a little choked as I just bought a DS Lite a few months back, but The new features on the DSi don't really appeal to me at all.
Why did nintendo even bother to release a new DS when they ALREADY made a redesign beforehand. This looks like a DS Lite with all the FEATURES stripped from it such as half decent battery life and a GBA slot.
