White Knight Chronicles, should I be excited for this?
BlindsideDork | 1:57 PM on 09.22.2008 13 comments

White Knight Chronicles: Wave of the Ancients has been popping up everywhere recently with the size of the game and release dates. But should I be excited about this game? Is there reason to be worked up over it?

I suppose it is if you are a PS3 owner and/or an RPG fan, both which I am but the latter is a bit more like a college girl's sexual preference on facebook; it's complicated. I grew up loving RPG games. Played Dragon Warrior a lot, go to my friend's house for some Final Fantasy action, as well as watching/playing Final Fantasy II (best Final Fantasy ever) and Final Fantasy III with my brothers. And along came Secret of Evermore and Secret of Mana, both offering new gameplay to the RPG world. But then came two games that would change my outlook on RPGs almost forever.

The first was Chrono Trigger which is the best RPG of all time. It had it all and I loved playing it. I was always disillusioned by the thought of an RPG having multiple endings. Later, I came to realize they weren't too different from each other but the fact that they were included is truly something to marvel at. My world of RPGs were set and wonderful. But then, the black hole came.

This black hole came out and scowered the media. Everywhere you looked you saw something about it whether it was on the TV or the magazines. What was going on? Would this game really be epic enough a match for my beloved CT? No way, never...but maybe?

Next thing I know, my brother brings home a Playstation he bought from a friend. The games included were Ghost in the Shell, a demo disc, and IT. The black hole itself. I knew I had to try it out. How could any self-professed lover of RPG not play this game? I had to...I had to...why did I? It only brought on what I like to call, the dark ages.

The game, if you don't know by now, is none other than Final Fantasy 7 (so not deserving of roman numerals). Say what you will but it wasn't anything spectacular. At one poing I played it just to play it. Not cause I wanted to, not cause I was enjoying it but cause I felt I had to do it. I tried to press on and ignore some of the stupidities of the game but I couldn't and I no longer wanted to play an RPG again. It wasn't a horrible game, but nothing like it was made out to be.

The dark ages came and I didn't touch another RPG for years. Not even old loves I had before. I couldn't bring myself to play them. Perhaps I felt I was unclean from this 7. It wasn't until a chance some four or five years down the line that I happened to pick up Golden Sun for the GBA. What was this? An RPG that I wanted to play and liked?! Oh sweet, sweet irony.

It was the Golden Sun series (all two games, baby) that brough me back to the genre. But I have to admit, there is still some hesitation left in this fingers. I don't know when another Golden Sun will come about, but I am even more fearful of a 7 popping up.

Hence why I ask...should I be excited about this White Knight Chronicles? Sure it will look pretty, but how will it play? I saw a video of new pictures (wierd, huh?) and I couldn't help but get urges to play. Here's the video...

These urges, should I put them to sleep or encourage them to grow to play this beast when it finally comes out?

I have never played a Level-5 game so therefore I am not obsessed with the developer.

@BSD

Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud, Jeanne d'Arc, Dragon Quest VIII, Professor Layton. I'm sure you've played at least one of these.

Play Dark Cloud 2, then play Rogue Galaxy. NOW you're quality confused, and I've made your decision harder.

I want to be excited for a Level-5 game. The combat is usually OMFG awesome, but the story is usually an afterthought.

Oh, I'm looking at you, Rogue Galaxy. Don't you think your flashy battle system can shield the weak ass story that lies under it all.

As for White Knight, it can't be honestly that hard to interject a decent story into an intriguing premise like this.

Level-5, PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!
