Go online with Gears of War or Gears of War 2 and you will see a good number of people playing it. People itching for a chainsaw fight or to broil you for some good eatin'. But there is a sad story to all of this.
Among the hustle and bustle picking the Lancer or Hammerburst, the sad story resides. When in the Horde lobby, people were clamoring on with who they were. "Oh, I got the cowboy!" "Well the old man/general chief is mine." "Hmmm, should I be Stormtrooper 1 or Stormtrooper 2?" There are even some people who want to be the bald asian just incase they unlocked the ability to do super, awesome, kung-fu grip kill special unlock. And somewhere in the background there is a wimper and a tear shed. For there is one character that is not shown the respect he deserves. I too have fallen into blame for neglecting him and I only feel remorse since I do not have the game to correct this injustice but if you still have the game you can do something about it!
No one plays as Dom!
I am serious, no one does. I have not seen a multiplayer match where someone picked Dom. Even in the campaign, everyone always wants to be player 1. That's why when I played through it, I made my friend be first player so I could give Dom some loving. In the first game, the only way they could get gamer's to play nice and pick him is by making there an ACHIEVEMENT for playing as him. That's like telling someone you'd play a game with them aslong as they were a character with no attack and you promised to compliment them to the whole world every hour as they played. It is just embarrassing. Gamers can be so cruel.
Why is such a character so frowned upon? Is it a racist thing cause he is of latin descent? Is it the crew-cut hair style since it is cliche (in a game full of cliche)? You could say it is cause his unemotional, emo nature with his wife in Gears 2 but no one wanted to play as him in the first game either so that wouldn't work.
Perhaps this character was never represented well in the first game so players didn't care for him. His "big rescue" of Fenix from the prison didn't seem as momentus as it could have been. It seemed to just have happened and they went on their way. Was Dom just a body in the first title that people couldn't connect with or didn't have anything to connect to? This could lead to why in the second game he was given a major side plot but at that point the damage was already done.
Further proof of people not caring can be found in google searches. I will say it was quite hard to find some decent pictures of Dom. He isn't a hot search. Even when you do find them, most cases are is that he isn't alone. Another example comes in the form of papercraft. You can download and make a
Marcus Fenix Cubeecraft complete with Lancer but there is no Dom to make. People just don't care.
Should people care for this sidekick? I think we should. Dom is there for Marcus to bust him out of jail, to pick him up when he gets downed, to interject some witty sayings for a laugh. He doesn't hog the limelight like some other people and has only asked for help once. He does so much and gets so little in return. Don't you think it is time to return this favor or are you just going to continue to pass him by and for the cowboy? If you do the latter, just remember what
one EPIC Games forum poster says: "
There would be no Gears of war without Dominic Santiago; the only thing it would be is watching Marcus get bombed in jail."
