Tell me why you hate Turok?
BlindsideDork | 11:11 AM on 12.09.2008 47 comments

Oh snap, I went there! Just about everyone who has read my blog undoubtingly knows that I have played/do own/do like the video game known as Turok. Well now is your chance to tell me why I shouldn't like it since it apparently "tarnishes" my opinion.

I am asking you Dtoid community members to tell me why it sucks, why I shouldn't like it, why is it so bad, why did they even bring such a horrible game into existance? Let me hear it!

And no, saying "the demo sucks" or "pictures suck" does NOT count. I am looking for some legitimate reasons that make playing the game horrible.

Honestly, tell me why it is so bad.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

For the same reason I hate getting kicked in the balls: it hurts.

Last one I played was Turok 64. I don't remember much about it and never bought it, so it likely wasn't that great. The concept is neat though. Jurassic Park meets FPS. You'd think that it would work on some level. I've heard nothing good about a Turok game since and so never even looked into it.

I wouldn't say the game sucks. I just think there are better ways to spend your money if you're looking for a first person shooter. Turok is not bad game; it's just not a great game. And a game needs to be great to justify a purchase in a market as saturated as first person shooters.

I didn't think it was that bad. 7.8 was the score I gave it. It had some glitches and the weapons were not as cool as they could have been; since the series is known for crazy weapondry. Its a decent shooter so I find nothing wrong with your love for Turok. I do, however, find your hate for Prince of Persia disturbing.

also, how to make Turok cool again:

1. lose the shaved head crap
2. decrease armor size by 90% (actually screw armor)
3. have it take place in Pellucidar
4. no more aliens please thanks
5. let me play as the dinosaurs ala L4D versus mode
6. protagonist must be either an awesome native american guy or a scientist like gordon freeman
7. QTEs go in the trash
8. somewhere in the game there needs to be a Panzer Tank vs. T-Rex battle

I haven't liked a single Turok since the first one, so I see nothing changing my mind now.

Why are we needing to justify it anyway. Your particular like or dislike of a game shouldn't pre-dispose you to being unable to have opinions. We can disagree with your opinions, but you shouldn't care, they're your opinions. Caring that someone disagrees with my opinions is like the lowest on totem pole of things that I care about when I ponder what people think of me.

forget it, only good turok game they can make now is an XBL port of the n64 game, which i doubt they can do.

Because it pales in comparison to Seeds of Evil.

Also, NO FUCKING CEREBRAL BORE?! Balls to that, my friend.

Actually, Yahtzee's review pretty much sums it up. With hilarious (and sexy) results.

from what I saw the story was annoyingly forced. maybe im spoiled from valve games or maybe i just don't remember the n64 versions story to well but I just want to fight dinosaurs and bad guys and be an ACTUAL indian not some space indian from the future with flash backs of the past fighting guys with guns from killzone.

I dunno.

Last Turok I played was Turok 2 for the N64. Crazy weapons don't make a good game.

I haven't gotten over the rotten seeds that Turok planted when it was born, honestly. The series has always been on the outside of clever or interesting, and that's saying a lot since the concept of blowing the shit out of dinosaurs seems like it would be fun. The engine felt mushy, the difficulty was a joke, the weapons felt unrealistic (even for "scifi" weapons; they don't feel sincere enough), and I recall having to backtrack a lot (which to me is the sign of terrible level design).
Admittedly, I haven't given the new one a chance, but I also haven't tried to wrestle with any wild dogs since the last time one bit me. These both sound like smart decisions.

The campaign was solid enough to justify the 30 bucks i spent on the game.

But the game felt half baked all the way through.

Cause it was not a Turok game in anyway. The only thing that made it Turok were the dinosaurs. Well, and an honest to god Turok game contained a LOT more than just that. See Turok 2 Seeds Of Evil for details.

But this, this was NOT Turok. It was retarded. I gave it a chance and wasted my time, because I WAS expecting a REAL Turok game.

The game itself isn't THAT bad. But the fact that it was called Turok just ruined everything.

Well seriously, I think the reason it's brought up as an attack against your credibility is because you tend to call out a LOT of other FPS and 3rdPS as generic or "just another FPS/3rdPS", yet you love Turok. A game which by pretty much all accounts, is supremely generic (even with dinosaurs).

I never said Turok wasn't generic. It has limited weapons and does nothing new compared to other FPS I have played. But when was the last FPS that I played that allowed me to blow up a giant dilophosaur or stab raptors in the face?

It brings back childhood memories of the Turok on the N64. They were never the best but I wasn't caught up all this hooplah of the "industry" before and was just having fun. And Turok brought me some fun as I ran on top of a rock with my bow & arrow and sticking people with arrows right and left, followed by me jumping on a raptor with a knife....it was an amazing feeling that I haven't felt in a game in awhile. Cause you know...no games really have dinosaurs.

I liked it, a fun little shooter even if the knife was insanely overpowered.

The demo was okay... until I started using the knife for everything. Then things got awesome, stabbing-dinosaurs-in-the-face awesome.

I think if a sequel was made that they should focus even more on knife play instead of making it a QTE activator, also make the knife mechanics smoother (remember slitting throats in turok 1? good times).

THERE ARE NO CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF TUROK ANYWHERE NEAR THE GAME! What kind of Turok games did you play on 64? Not the same ones I did!

Also, what GuitarAtomik said. :)

Game should of been called QTE, due to the fact that it got extremely old by the 500th time a QTE came up within the first 20 - 30 minutes of the game.

Turok Rage Wars was better than this because it FELT more like a Turok game. I mean, especially since it had more similarities than just dinosaurs and the bow & arrow. :P

I didn't really like the demo, especially the stealth part - but it showed promise. However, as many others have mentioned, it didn't feel like the n64 Turok games, hence my interest was snuffed in an instant. I loved the original and Seeds of Evil (even clocked the sub-par third one and put considerable time into Rage Wars).... so I was certainly let down.

Turok isn't a good game for the same reasons that it isn't a very good console FPS. Twitchy controls, no aim assistance, switching out the arguably unique experience of older Turok games with a largely generic bald space marine adventure makes Turok a game not really worth the time or money spent.

The thing is is that Turok brings nothing new to the table. Innovation doesn't always make a good game, but if one's game doesn't intend to add a lot of new things, the old things had better work as well or better than the competition. That didn't happen with this new Turok.

I wouldn't say it tarnishes your credibility any more than my liking Way of the Samurai (god I hope they port the new one to English) does.
