How many times have you written off a movie or a game just cause you heard something or just cause? We all have done it but why is this done? Subconscious, console war, hatred for someone associated to it? Or is it just really darn horrible?
I'll be the first to admit to this. Off the top of my head I can name two things. But what drives you to denounce a game? Is it just a lack of interest or concept? Is it cause some person you suck up to hates it? Or is there something more to it that you are just afraid to admit deep inside of you? It's ok...you can share, I won't tell anyone! Promise. I'll even go first.
Mass Effect is a game that I fully denounce. I have no interest in playing it even though it seems like the type of game I
might want to play. Why is this? Not sure, maybe it is cause it was described as one type of game when it looks like a different type all together. I think I'd be embarassed to be caught playing it as well, stupid gamerpoints! I did make a promise to someone that I'd play it if it came to the PS3 but who knows if that will happen. I don't even feel like wasting a spot on my Gamefly list for it. It's not like I've had an interest in playing it, but seeing it in action and seeing the end boss fight made me yawn and say no thanks in full force.
So are there any games you wrote off prematurely or are too embarassed to try? And I am not talking about Wii games for babies or anything. I am talking about games for adults (not necesarily mature rated).
its horrible.
also, mass effect is buttcheeks. any game that is more dialogue than gameplay is not a game.
Never been one to avoid a game. Negative connotations generally get me to check out a game sooner.
I did find Mass Effect quite fun. I guess I'm one of the few who actually liked the KotOR series, and other games that fit the "caliber" of KotOR/ME.
Also, Knights of the Old Republic. Darth Nihilus was cool, but that was about it. It's also fueled by my rage against anyone who thinks that Bioware is some type of Godly development studio. The last good thing they did (before Mass Effect) was Baldur's Gate IMO and I'm already getting critical about Dragon Age.
Also, Cooking Mama can burn in hell.
Not a bad thing, I was surprised when I played Fear on my 360.
Not so much with Turok...
GO RENT THEM.
And yes, I write games off sometimes without playing them. But not too often, really. I try and give everything a fair chance.
You should try Mass Effect, but only if it takes minimal effort (friends house, cant find anything better to hire, etc etc). It sounds like you really just dont feel any need to play it, so if you never do, you havent really lost anything... or at least, you wont feel like you have.
Then GTA came out, and I haven't looked back.
I know that wasn't a video game, but that's the only example I could think of.
Oh, and how everyone worships Halo. I hate that. I understand that it actually is a good game - I've played it and it wasn't bad. I guess I just hate overhype.
The only game I like that is turn based is Pokemon, but its combat is so simple and addictive I can look past the turn based bullshit.
Also RPGs. Especially JRPGs. It is rare that I will ever enjoy a western RPG, but it is practically impossible for me to enjoy a JRPG.
If I ever come on to destructoid saying how much I love a JRPG, it is a sure sign that the apocalypse is coming.
-pushes rant turn off switch-
Did you even play Mass Effect? The game is wall to wall action sequences, yes there's a lot of talking but there's plenty of action to make up for it, hell you can bypass most of the dialogue if you want.
I wrote Kingdom Hearts, the concept of it seemed stupid to me, I gave it a shot and ended up loving it.
