Games are coming out right and left. It is almost an industry standard that they have some sort of multiplayer added to them. Some people even consider the game not worth it if it has no multiplayer. Or you can look at titles like Halo 3 that has a single player campaign but is based and hinges on its mp section. With so many games to choose from, it can be awfully hard to find the one for you.
That is where you find me. Over here ... no to your left. YOUR left! Okay, there we go. Now where was I? Oh yeah ... I am going to try my best and select some of the BEST titles that capture the feeling of certain types of multiplayer. That and cover the popular ones and let you know what they generally are best at what they do in the grand scheme of multi-ness battleness of players. I will hit the main biggies first.
Halo 3 = One Man Army Let's face it, when you want to run around and blow things up you play this game. Sure there are teams and sucktacular custom games *cough*ROCKET RACE*cough* but this is the game where you don't NEED to rely on others to win. If you ever played Meth Head with some of the Dtoid peoples, you know what I am talking about. Teams just make you survive a little longer, but you will die and respawn to kill some more. I've seen lone wolves in team matches that get the most kills and least amount of deaths so it doesn't always pay to be together. That is if you are good.
Rainbow Six: Vegas = Realistic Tactical You cannot deny the Rainbow Six series a spot here. This series is perhaps one of the closest to real life. Get shot once or twice and you are deader than a doornail. It happens all too often. But that is what makes it so much fun. You have to work as a team and becareful with your movements. Inch a centimeter too far around the corner and you are on the ground with a red screen, I've seen it way too many times. It might not be the most played around but I've seen it up there once in awhile, so bow down!
Team Fortress 2 = Ultimate Tactical Game Say wha? How is the ultimate tactical game and not the realistic R6:V? One word, classes. Yeah, Vegas let's you pick a recon or sniper outfit and gear but that doesn't change anything. It just changes what weapons you start off with. TF2 is at the top of the list cause the weapons you begin with are the only ones you can use. Not only that but every character has a strength and a weakness. Heavy guys are slow but strong. Scouts are fast but weak. And so on with the others. How many others? With a total of nine different classes, it adds an interesting dynamic to the game. In other games listed, the characters are all the same but might look different. Nothing is actually different though. If you don't have all the right characters, the other team could overtake you in minutes. Not everyone realizes this and just picks the sniper and try to snipe everyone. You don't need THREE snipers on the 2Fort map! One is ALMOST too many. It is all about strategy and tactics. You have to learn to pick and choose your characters wisely and your team will come out on top. Or else you will fail.
Gears of War = Realistic/unrealistic tactical shooter I was going to say chainsaw game but I think there is a little more to it thant just that. Don't worry, I wasn't forgetting it. But ever since Halo came out, Snaileb is the only one I ever see playing it. It is sort of like a mix between Rainbox Six, Halo 3, and Resident Evil 4. Realistic and yet unrealistic. Shotguns work at times and then don't usually when you need them. Boom Boom Rockets go boom not all the time. Rev your chainsaw up and if you are near by someone they get sucked up in what -D- calls the "chainsaw vacuum" (patent pending?). There are times when you can't take one person on by yourself and other times where I tore through four imposing enemies with my Lancer and Shotgun. It is for this reason alone that some have rejected the game. But others still embrace it. Will there be a resurgence of popularity in this game? Probably, but not until bonus content and/or Gears of War 2 is unsheathed. These are just the tip of the iceberg, many more games out there exist and will come in future installments.

i think cliffyB did a good job explaning gears as the tactical fps for the add crowd. you can't run into the middle of the playfield like a headless chicken a-la halo, but the maps are small enough to keep the pace of play fun, even if you aren't moving around much.

I'll stick to my Haloz and CoD4.
