MGS4 90 Minute Cut Scenes: Good and Bad? PAUSE it
BlindsideDork | 10:48 AM on 05.23.2008 19 comments

To tell you the truth, I wasn't interested in this game in the slightest. I played MGS1 and beat it and enjoyed it. But due to no time or availability of a PS2, I didn't get to the other ones, 2 or 3. It didn't harm me and bring me great discomfort though. I did jump in on the BETA cause it was free and I got hooked up. But why are people complaining about the most recent news?

Is there a whole lot to complain about? You get a high quality game plus high quality cinemas to fulfill the story and answer all the questions you wanted to know about the series. It is like watching a MOVIE on your favorite (or at least one you like) game without the mighty fail of a video game movie. How is that bad?

"Games are meant to be played." I can't argue much with that cause I like to play games too. But sometimes you can't play something and have the story pan out accurately. BioShock is a good example going against this, but that is dealing with one person and barely a handful of others that have something to say. Doesn't hurt that you don't have a tongue (not literally) Your character also doesn't remember his past. I am sure Snake doesn't suffer from amnesia. Snake will talk and do stuff that you couldn't dare pull off with your lacking SIXAXIS or late DualShock 3. Also, dialogue.

My only problem with it is I wish they would tell you when you are about to watch a long cut scene so you can pause (yes, I said pause cause that feature DOES exist along with the mighty skip) the cut scene to make some popcorn. That is what I want. Otherwise, oh well.

And can you really complain about the mandatory install? I've come across maybe one game that had no install, all the rest have. It is fact in PS3 titles. The file size is pretty large but it isn't going to kill you. You don't need to keep 2038 demos on your PS3. Especially the timed demos that no longer work. I am a collector and I even delete those. So what are you complaining about?

I might even go reserve the game right after work...plus my PS3 could use a little playing since Haze is a big ole failure. This seems like an experienced to be...well experienced.

I don't know why you can't pause a majority of game cutscenes. The only game that comes to mind is Kingdom Hearts II.

Also, that's a good point about not having to have a movie based on MGS4; at this point, if they did it, it would pretty much have to be non-canonical.

I'd like to point out that I'm not a fan of the story telling method but its nice to see that you will be able to pause it.

If you can pause it, save the game, and come back to it later in a couple of days that'd be great on my schedule.

it seems like with each sequel kojima has cut the amount of gameplay and increased the cutscenes and codec dialogue. i'm still a big fan of the series and will pick up the game on release day but in a way i'm glad it's the swan song. maybe kojima will move on to making a movie (maybe not MGS) but i think thats what he really wants to do.

Can you save in the middle of cutscenes? THAT'S WHATS FUCKING IMPORTANT!

I'm starting to think it's more like Kojima's way of saying "fuck off Hollywood, you ain't gettin' a Metal Gear Solid movie, we're putting it in the fucking game!" Or something.

I'd like to see them take it a step further.
I want full controls during cut scenes. Fast forward, rewind, pause... this is two-thousand and eight for chrissakes.

I disagree, that monkey should not only be the focal point of the cutscenes but also be a playable character for the second half of the game.

eh, i'm anti cutscene all together, unless thier brief. gta iv did a good job of getting you the mandatory info during the cutscenes, then dialog would unfold as you do the mission. i don't like being removed from the action more than maybe 5 minutes, makes the game less immersive.

I just hope they let us save mid cut scene.

Hey, I don't really give a fuck what other people think. This is the final game, bad sales won't make this bad. Just as long as I get my copy, the internet can go on and say whatever the fuck they want.

I'm sure the MGS cutscenes, just as usual, will be long and worth it. Unlike Xenosaga, where it dragged it so slowly and was boring to boot.

I don't see what people are even trying to complain about. They know damn well they'll enjoy those 90 min long cutscenes. Or else you wouldn't have been able to last through MGS1-3.

@4knuck:

If you can pause it, and you need to go do IRL stuff (eat, piss, go to work, fuck, etc.), then you can pause the cutscene, turn off your TV, and do what needs done. Then come back and finish... I've done this before plenty of times.

I remember that I had to watch the ending to Paper Mario: TTYD in three parts. I played at night, got tired put it down, got up in the morning, finished the boss fight before going to work, and then came home and watched the ending. It had to have been about an hour and a half segment... including the shit before the fight, the fight and the ending.

I dont know, Im on the fence with this one...I think 90 minutes is overboard...Ill still get the game but Im very disappointed that I will have to watch a game instead of play it.

I wish a while after the game is released, they come out with a DVD with all the Cutscenes. After all, in the MGS saga the whole story is narrated via Cut Scenes

The game should just warn you, "HEY! This next cutscene is going to be super long, totally awesome, and absolutly ridiculous. Go take a break! When you ready to expierience the madness, this game will be ready for ya!"
