Lag yourself to victory?
BlindsideDork | 11:37 AM on 09.25.2008 19 comments

Last night I was in a grueling match of TF2 and I came across something pecular. My teammates had been saying someone was lagging so bad you couldn't kill them. I didn't think too much of it cause I wasn't seeing it. Then on the third level of Dustbowl, I flamed the supposed "lagger" who was in a corner and next thing I know he is gone.

Wait, where did he go? He was on fire, he didn't die but now he is gone. I go around the corner and he chucks a bunch of grenades in my face.

Normally when this happens you are experiencing lag and it is atrocious to play. The thing is, my gaming experience was running smoothly with no problems. No stutters, to stalls, no lag, nothing. But this one guy was lag, flying all over the place.

This brings up the question, can you lag yourself to make yourself a "better" player by not allowing yourself to get hit. Is this possible? How/why did this happen?!

I'd doubt it. Sounds like it could give you an edge in some instances, but it'd be so unpredictable you really couldn't rely on it as a valid tactic.

I know I've never "improved" from lag.

PS: Play PC version with us plz! <3

I cant play the 360 version. It lags too much. I find it completely unplayable.

Could be host advantage. If he wasn't the host then I doubt the game was any better for him.

I don't have a PC so I can't play TF2 on PC.

Also, he wasn't the host. The host was on my team and there is no host advantage in TF2.

I've had similar experiences in Socom, GTA4, as well as MGO. Some people don't even realize it, (It happened to a friend of mine), and they'll destroy everyone in the room/game. Of course people usually kick players that do this or flame them until they leave.

Probably an update to the class that we didn't have to DL.

But yeah...he was on the other team and you can't kick mid game.

Sometimes when I am torrenting at like 9KB lag works in my favor but when it gets up to like 300KB lag starts working against me.

Yes it can work in your favour as FALINTER said a lot of people purposefully do things to make themselves lag slightly. It's a fine art of cheating (you can overshoot and lag yourself too much) but the crux of it is that it's still cheating. You can of course do it by accident as well however.

Just one of the dangers of online gaming I'm afraid.

Yeah, you can lag yourself like that. There's a little box you can buy...well...it makes you lag when you use it. There are other ways too(like purposely running a torrent while gaming and such).
This has actually been a problem in MGO(though the badly written netcode also influences the lag alot).

You can actually set torrents to run at a certain speed. So if running at 9KB gives you an advantage. you can set it to only download max 9KB (or a little over to compensate for how random downloading torrents can be and you wind up somewhere in the middle) so that way you still get the lag advantage without havening the torrent overshoot.

of course I've never played on a network where lag could give me any sort of advantage without utterly destroying my connection. But I assume it would work somewhat like the slow downs in a megaman esq style game where everyone slows down and you still keep the advantage and can think more about actions before they happen.

Probably just some connection manipulation. I see it in tons of different games. I'm not sure how they manage to do it so reliably, though. Everytime I lag, it usually just results in the game being unplayable.

You can, it's something that CoD4 players were doing for the 360. I dunno what system you're running TF2 on, but if it's the 360 then that's what's happening.

Yes, yes you can. It was easier before, nowadays it's a bit tricky.
I remember people lagging themselves on Counter-Strike Source so they could be impossible to be shot in the head, as the hitboxes went crazy with so much lag.

I have a video on Halo 3 where someone was purposefully lagging. 12 headshots with a sniper rifle in a row while he just sits there smugly firing back at me.

Bastard.
