How many more Smash Characters?
BlindsideDork | 9:12 AM on 09.12.2007 27 comments

This post is inspired by B-Radicate's post that was inspired by my post...did I just open a can of worms? Anyways...his post on Smash characters and who you want in it brought me to the Smash Character Screen. Right now there are only 18 characters showed off but the box spacing leaves room for one veteran and one newcomer making a grand total of 20.

It is possible to expand the boxes but for right now we can guess who the newcomer will be and who the veteran is.

My guess...

Newcomer = Snake

Veteran = Captain Falcon

I think that would cover all the basic types of characters from the original. Don't hold your breath for Marth, Roy, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Falco, Young, Link, Jiggly Puff, MewTwo, or Mr. Game & Watch coming back. Ness, Ice Climbers, Gannondorf, and Luigi are iffy...

And about Ganondorf, I could see Zant possibly coming in cause Twilight Princess or a revised Ganondorf.

Your guesses?

I think you're right with your guesses, but how cool would zant be?

Also, how many more smash characters have to die?

Newcomer = Besides Snake would be Sonic.. I still believe it..

Veteran = Ness

There still needs to be luigi, you can't just cut him out so I'd say he'll be showing up. As for the next one though I agree Captain Falcone is probalby it.

As for new characters Snake isn't htere and we know he is so that's gotta be him.

I don't know if they will announce Sonic at all as I see him as an unlocable character and thus the internets won't be full of Sonic!!!! omfg!!! until after the game is released, or someone leaks it.

I also want a Goomba to be a Newcomer, poor guy gets no respect... Viva la Goomba

Ice Climbers are out for sure.

If Ness wasn't in the game that would be tragic. But I think there are going to be more than just 1 veteran and 1 newcomer I mean if you are going on the box from the website...they can add another row too so I could see Ness, Luigi, Captain Falcon etc. still in the game.

Lol, as if no Luigi, thats not gonna happen. Ganon will absolutely be in it, However ice climbers are confirmed as being out, and young link was being replaced with Windwaker link.

Ness better be in there. He was difficult to control, but powerful. If I didn't play Pikachu, I was Ness.

also i would give my testicles away for veiwtful JOe chracter to be in it.. He would make a perfect fit..

new comer, COOKING MAMA.
bhive01's Destructoid Blog
They really shouldn't have two links.

Veiwtiful Joe would be pretty sweet actually.
metromapper's Destructoid Blog
So Samus gets two characters (which is awesome), but no Luigi!?

@Blaze: Viewtiful Joe would be perfect I agree. Though I guess his specials would be aggravating in Multiplayer, with the whole time slowing down and all.

Hahaha Cooking Mama - I've never thought of that, I love it.
balth's Destructoid Blog
Yeah, I think your assumption of just 20 for each is skewed slightly; I just played Melee yesterday, and there were more than 40, i think.

My guess would be 25 and 25, they aren't going to lay all their cards on the table yet, methinks.
Cowzilla3's Destructoid Blog
I'm not saying i'm a fan of this idea but your Mii could be a definite character where you could apply the moves youw anted from a selected list.

He could have the power to stand, walk over there, fall asleep, wiggle his arms around, vote on things and most importantly march in a parade.

Samus' second character I think is like Sheik but you can't pick her to start off as?

I remember an interview on DToid in which some important guy let slip that they were redoing Ganondorf's design completely.

They did say NO clones.
AngelsDontBurn's Destructoid Blog
Yeah I was gonna say. I remember someone saying Ganondorf was in it. Never heard anything about Captain Falcon though.

I think Luigi will be in it with his vaccuum.
Necros's Destructoid Blog
It's really sad that clones will be gone, as I prefer Dr. Mario to Mario and know a lot of people who use Falco over Fox. I also liked Roy and Young Link.

Luigi will be in it, though. There's no reason not for him to be, especially when he plays differently enough from Mario and is one of Nintendo's biggest characters.
B-Radicate's Destructoid Blog
I still don't understand how Zero Suit Samus counts as a new character if she is seemingly only playable by playing as normal Samus and THEN doing her Super Smash. That makes me think there will be other "new" or even veteran characters that are merely costume changes of current fighters.

Did anyone else always get mad when they had to play as a yellow Kirby or green Donkey Kong? Wouldn't it be cool if every different player, if they chose the same character, would merely have an entirely different costume?

Many fighting games, like Soul Calibur, allow for totally different costumes. With such a wide range of games to pull from these characters could have different themes. Dark Samus? Windwaker Link? Dr. Mario? Pichu?

The separate "clones" would instead become the different costume variations for the characters. It'd allow for many of the old cloned favorites like Falco and Ganondorf to return, as well as open the opportunity for more "characters" to enter the Brawl, even if they played exactly as (or slightly altered from) their original character (Dr. Mario throwing pills instead of fire, for instance, but retaining most everything else).

While the clones may be even closer to their original characters instead of more different, which is generally what is wanted, I think it'd be even cooler. Maybe for some of the old characters even have 2D sprite versions or "original appearance" versions. And, heaven forbid a character doesn't have enough "versions" or similar characters throughout Nintendo canon to warrant more than one or two "clone costumes" (like Pit, for instance) THEN and ONLY THEN could they do color changes to the costumes.

For real, 2D Mario vs 2D Link vs 2D Samus vs 2D DK.

A man can dream, can't he?

PS - Props for the post inspired by my post inspired by your post.

@ B-Radicate
They'd have to create a lot of new animations for the old 2D sprites, since they were much more limited and less fluid than what you can do in Smash Bros. The only reason Mr. Game and Watch worked was because they drew from the entire Game and Watch series.

Um, has anybody noticed that snake has the same fighting attacks as C. Falcon did? notice his up kick, same move.
