A dark cloud is soon to be overshadowing us all. It cannot be stopped and will not be stopped. You will have to succumb to this evil combination for it is all powerful and you will facepalm greatly.
Two celebrities are getting together to make a film together. They have decided to remake Oldboy. That deliciously, powerful film with and awful/amazing ending. A film that is powerful, brutal and makes you think, "now that's effed up!"
But who are these two celebrities? They are not the individuals you would think when you think of this film. Actually they are the furthest away from what you would expect. It comes with such great sadness to bring you their names.
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith
Evil, right? SO much evil and wrongness in every sense of being and way you could imagine it. How dare they. And it seems everyone is saying the perfect way to sum up how they feel about it can be found in a simple video that is profound.
Of course there are other ways to react to this news, take this person for example.
Now if you can't possibly and don't believe this news...take a deep breath and believe it Spielberg is looking for a writer as you read this.
All hope is lost. We will be consumed by the dark cloud soon enough.
Old boy was a good movie, but I only watched it after I heard all the hype so I was a bit let down.
The story builds and builds, and it has all these crazy twists and turns, and then you find out the motivation behind the whole ordeal, and you think "Seriously? thats it? thats what this is all about? Really?"
That said, will smith should not be allowed to make movies. I can't think of anything outside of MIB that he's been in that was even approaching watchable.
Whats the big deal? Steven Spielberg is one of the finest directors around. Would you rather have Uwe Boll make it? Perhaps some of you were hoping for Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson instead of Will Smith?
Oldboy was a great movie that didn't reach mass audiences in the US. There is potential for something great if done right. If not, the original will still be there laughing at us.
No one gave two shits when the Internal Affairs trilogy (Mou gaan dou) was remade in to The Departed by Martin Scorsese.
I knew this was happening. FUCK! Our band name came from this movie cause we loved it so much. I knew a remake was always being talked about but UGH, I was hoping it was a rumor. God this is gonna suck. Fuck the US box office, all they do is remake movies 75% of the time now.
As an owner of the super awesome special edition DVD and huge fan of this movie, I can honestly say this is one of the most finely crafted films I've ever seen. Maybe Spielberg and Smith should team up for something original and not remake an arguably perfect film.
Assholes.
Also, daxelman is my new best friend (Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie of all time).
@Sweetmadness: Yeah. It's almost the same. Except for the fact DBZ is a pretty fucking awful cartoon series if you really think about it.
The characters have very little depth and all they do is waste a whole hour talking about a fight that will last 10 minutes and then someone discovers a new power level and everyone freaks out. Rinse repeat.
The worst thing to ever happen to DBZ was that it was made into a cartoon.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I mean, it's not like Spielberd and Smith are going to destroy every copy of the original, leaving us with just their likley-to-suck remake.
At best, it will be a good movie in its own right, at worst it will be a laughable failure. Either way, we win.

But I still want to see it, more than I would want to something like Ali 2 or Fresh Prince: The Movie.

I'd rather a special re screening in theaters of Pulp Fiction. THAT movie is gold.
