Fallout 3, it's coming and I've seen the advertisements, they look pretty sweet. So this morning I decided to check more into a game I know nothing about to decide if it is something relevant to my interests. What I found out was...why? Why are people so excited about this? Please someone help me understand what's so great about this.
No, I haven't played Fallout 1 or 2 cause I didn't want to but I might be interested in this one. I like concept of a post-apocalyptic DC area (especially since I work there), but this gameplay looks so stale. check out the video I watched.
From what I gather, you run around with guns in a decayed place trying to shoot creatures/people who may/may not react to your hits. And then you can always pause the game, select what body part to kill them and have them die instantly which seems like the most/only effective way to kill. I really don't get it. What is so exciting about it? Not sure how the PC versions ran before but did they take the original and make it easier for this "new generation" along with for consoles?
This "stop time" or "instant death move" is a real game killer for me and I probably wouldn't use it but then the standard straight up combat isn't too appetizing. Actually from the video, I am left unsatisfied in the FPS realm. You might say that's cause it isn't a FPS, but look at that video and tell me it isn't an FPS. I think the first video is worse than this over video but then I noticed in this other video how enemies don't even react to your gun fire. They will just stand there and fire or run up to you and only show any sign of being hit when they are dead. Now that's lame.
It just doesn't look appealing or interesting to play. So why should I be excited for this over any other game like LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, or Left 4 Dead? And if you say that one thing a few of you love to say, that is proof that you suck and so does this game and there is no reason to be excited over it.
People like to play games like this because they like exploring neat worlds and finding cool items to use on thier adventure. Oblivion had crap gameplay, but made up for it with all of the cool shit to do.
Also, I think your being a bit harsh on a game you have yet to play, but comming from you i am not suprised lol
People are often harsh on games they have never played, but isn't that what videos are for? I could've tried to play it at PAX but wasn't interested then either.
It looks like they bumped up the hit chance for the videos because in the previous games you'd have to have a very high rank in one of the weapon skills in order to get a 95% chance of a headshot.
This isn't to say people are stupid for liking it but I am curious why people are interested and seeing if anyone could find a reason for me to be interested in it.
And BioShock was a good game but it was just a generic shooter. I enjoyed playing it but it wasn't so much special.
@Kamikazetutor
I want to play a game, not explore. If I wanted to explore I could play some more Viking, or Hulk Ultimate destruction. I could even pick up Endless Ocean and explore the ocean.
I also have not played the previous Fallout games, but most of my friends have and all they do is rave about how great they are. Then you have Bethesda making the game, which is an incredible studio with a rich heritage of making really good RPGs. You put the two together and you get a winning combination in my opinion.
Well I don't really go crazy for a developer cause all developers make good and bad games...is ever game that Capcom make good? No but most of their Resident Evil's RULE!
@Blindsidedork: Yes but Bethesda hasn't made a bad game in quite a long time. Even if it's not a "Great" game it will at least be a "good" game.
I have to admit that watching videos of this game do not sell it very well. The videos make the game seem like just another Post-apocalyptic FPS, which does not help to sell it at all. The real depth of the game will be in it's RPG elements and in the size and depth of the story and world.
To each his own you know. Everyone think LBP will be one of the greatest games of the year and I honestly didn't understand why at all. Watching videos or reading about the game just did not do it for me. But then I got a chance to play the Beta and doing so completely changed my opinion about the game. Sometimes you just have to play a game to understand why it's so great.
Those videos really don't do much to make me interested in the game. I've never played any of the previous Fallout games but if all I knew about the game came from those trailers I'd have to say its an FPS with lots of inventory management.
That being said, I've heard enough people rave about the previous games and the upcoming game to do a little more research on the game before I completely write it off.
Well if you said they haven't made a bad game in awhile...isn't it about time for a sucko? HAha! No, I am not saying it will be a bad game. I never once said this game will be horrible...I just said it looks uninteresting. And people have yet to make it seem interesting besides the things I have already said...
I like the look of it actually, because it does remind me of an RPG. I know what you think: he's crazy. Have you ever played a table top? You say to the DM "I wanna shoot him" and you roll the dice to do damage, and it keeps coming and its fluid (as far as dice rolling goes...). Then you say "I wanna shoot him...in the face" and the DM tells you that you have a 95% chance of blowing his face off. I think that the game is more an RPG than an FPS, so if you are looking for a good FPS go for CoD:WaW or the next Halolz.
Well BSD, if you SPY a HEAVY encampment, you can ENGINEER a plan to SOLDIER on over there and use some fancy PYROtechnics to blow them up. Or if your MEDICation is up to the task, you can SCOUT out a higher embankement and use a SNIPER rifle to kill the guards. Or you could always just try the DEMO, MAN.
That actually makes sense..never heard it explain that way I don't think. But I feel it doesn't translate well to game from this point of view.
And I'm not looking for a good FPS out of this game. I can see it isn't. And I wouldnt go to CoD or Halo for a good shooter, L4D and any thing made by Valve will do the trick.
This game is pretty epic, but it takes a long time to get the hang of it. It's definitely not an FPS at heart. You can play it as an FPS and die a lot, but on the consoles it is near impossible to play it as an action FPS. It's basically an adventure/rpg game in first person view where you have the choice to play it in realtime, not a realtime FPS with the choice to pause it.
Can't say if you'll like it or not, but it's about as much an FPS as Mass Effect was a third person shooter.
if you look at gameplay videos from the previous fallout games, you'll see that it looks pretty boring, but as most people will probably agree it was a lot of fun despite being very simple on the surface.
this game seems to have captured that pretty well from the look of it. in fact every time i see it, it reminds me of the old games a little more, and as a fallout fan that makes me very happy.
i understand why you (BSD) might think this looks boring, but if you'd played the originals then you'd know that it's based on a good formula. wether they can pull it off as well as the previous games did i don't know.
the vats system(pause kill) is not instant kill. it all depends on your char. stats. yeah you might be able to aim at the head but you might not hit him because your small arms skill is to low. or if you do it might not kill him either because your strength or damage is to low.. do people understand how rpgs work anymore?
I tried living my life through second-person perspective for a while. It was kind of awkward having someone tell me what I was doing.
"You trip over the coffee table crack your head on your entertainment center. Since you're relying on an unseen narrator to relate your actions to you you couldn't brace for the fall. You are currently unconscious and bleeding."
Yeah, it isn't really an FPS and I struggled when I attempted to play it as one. The VATS system is integrated pretty well, requiring action points to use which regenerate over time. They basically took a turn-based model and made it work in real-time.
I can see it being a game that's difficult for people who have not played a previous Fallout to become interested in. A huge part of the draw for me is that I have a level of familiarity with the setting and storyline. It's a rich game world with a lot of possibility and I'm looking forward to exploring more of it.
I'd rather have the good old turn based strategic combat of Fallout 1/2 than this abortion of a whatever it's meant to be.
The videos from the leaked copies look like utter shite. I guess you really gotta love Bethesda and/or running around vast uninteresting, identikit lands in order to be stoked for this. The multitude of sub par things in those videos could be excused in Oblivion, but not the second game using the same engine.
Regarding the RPG aspect of combat, Todd Howard was positively gleeful that people were playing it fully realtime as an FPS and not realising there was anything else to it, so don't expect anything to deep.
I'm too lazy to read the rest of these comments...
But I feel the same way after watching a few videos. It looks like I'd get a pretty similar experience going back through oblivion using only a bow and arrow. The enemies all react the same and the dialogue does than same thing where it zooms in on their face while time is stopped around you.
On top of that, there's not any mod tools being released for the PC version (at least at launch...). After hearing that, I'm not going to be picking this one up, at least not at launch.
I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. It is not meant to be played like a first-person shooter. Just because they switched the viewpoint to first person for Fallout 3 doesn't mean you're going to play it like you play Call of Duty. The same complaints came up with Metroid Prime.
Blindside if your not excited about the game your not excited, we shouldn't have to tell you what we think so you can just disagree and continue to not be excited.
Majority of the people that say it looks like total shit are the retarded fanboys that are SO butthurt cause it's not isometric and isn't exactly the same as the others.
Game is going to be amazing regardless. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. But it's definitely not shit by any means. :D
I've wanted a new Fallout for YEARS and I've been excited about this one for awhile now. This and L4D have been my HNNNGGGG gotta have it titles for too long now.
Obviously you don't understand. I see a lot of people being interested in this game. I am not excited for it and want to know why I should be interested in it...
So far all I've gotten was Oblivion, Bethesda, exploring a post-apocalyptic DC (which I already said), and "it's an RPG, not FPS." Nothing that shows me the excitement. Sorry if I wanted to go to the community of gamers that like Fallout to actually tell me great things about it...what was I thinking. Next time I will go ask Jack Thompson why it is so great...cause that makes sense, huh?
why should you be interested in this game? Because you can blow up a town with a nuclear warhead! You can also slaughter anyone no matter how important they are to the 'story'. You can fight gigantic scorpions and make your own custom weapons like explosive charges made out of lunch boxes, or some form of a vacuum cleaner that shoots teddy bears!
In all seriousness, I would take a stab at it if only for the story and history regarding the fallout universe. It is by no means a bioshock in terms of gameplay tho it may seem that way, it is definitely no call of duty 4 or half-life 2. Its in its own little realm, The first fallout was about a vault member from vault 13 who had to venture out in the wasteland and eseintally your first quest was to try and find a water condensor chip for the vault within a 137 some odd days orelse everyone in the vault would die. Now you could choose to let them die and forget about them, or you could do something about it.
Fallout 3 is taking from that original concept in that you can approach the story from any direction you want.. or completely go bat shit insane and go your own route. The story in itself I am really looking forward to with fallout 3, and I'm hoping its just as good as the originals. But the game is not out yet so I cant really convince you beyond that :P.
also dork, the vats system is going to be dependent on how many action points you have. And the whole system in itself is to give you a chance to survive a larger group of enemies, and it really all depends on how you use it. Because if you use it all on one person, and you still have 3 more to take care of .. your dependent on your skills as a marksmen and your ammunition that you have. Also while you are being swarmed by a group of enemies you will have to react in time to heal yourself.
Vats will be very useful to someone who is low on ammo, has alot of enemies to take care of, and/or may not have very powerful weapons or is going up against a group that is very powerful themselves. You should watch the pax gameplay footage on gametrailers not the one from the gametrailers tv special if you haven't already ;D.
It looks interesting, but I fear Bethesda for what they did with Oblivion... you see Oblivion was a great game, but it was just too fu**** big.
I understand that some games are big, but I dont get the be big for the sake of beign big. That screwed up Oblivion experience for me.
So Im looking forward to this game, maybe not that much like Left4Dead, but still I will try it out.
This is the problem, the story is so old most people won't see but...

He actually provided something more interesting to think upon than the stupid "Bethesda made it!" lines or complaining that I am just trying to dis people's opinions. There was some good reasons there that has my brain thinking that maybe I should rethink my thoughts.

...I expect you to die. LOWER THE CAGE INTO THE SHARKS!!
People are often harsh on games they have never played, but isn't that what videos are for? I could've tried to play it at PAX but wasn't interested then either.
So why post a blog on how you think people are stupid for liking this game?
You are evil!
It looks like they bumped up the hit chance for the videos because in the previous games you'd have to have a very high rank in one of the weapon skills in order to get a 95% chance of a headshot.
This isn't to say people are stupid for liking it but I am curious why people are interested and seeing if anyone could find a reason for me to be interested in it.
you didn't like the dark knight, therefore you are the personification of evil.
Also, I know most of the people the game will suck. The fact of the matter is, I actually loved Oblivion so I'm having lots of hope for Fallout 3.
You shouldn't be exited, it's gonna be another BioShock. Great atmosphere and story, shit gameplay. I'll take gameplay over story any day.
LEFT 4 DEAD, LEFT 4 DEAD, LEFT 4 DEAD!
I had the same impression but I think they're failing on the their marketing stance because the game looks interesting enough to EXPLORE around.
"You might say that's cause it isn't a FPS, but look at that video and tell me it isn't an FPS."
It isn't a FPS.
There, easy.
I'll just go on the metro to get my Fallout3 experience until the game's under $20.
I think MrSadistic left out a few words...
@NotaZombie

Run around in first person shooting people with guns...sure you can explore places but in FPS mode as you shoot people in first person perspective.
Also, FPS.
It's no Turok, that's for sure.
@tazarthayoot
If you mention that name ever inside anything relating to Fallout 3 I will chop your eyes out of your face.
All that matters is that I scored higher than you in that Destructoid level in LBP.
I Win, the end.
You're horrible.
I also have not played the previous Fallout games, but most of my friends have and all they do is rave about how great they are.
