Enough is enough, no more off-road games: Fuel
BlindsideDork | 10:48 AM on 10.23.2008 12 comments

This morning my train was a little late and I missed my shuttle, so I thought I'd moosie on over to the book store and gaze at the new magazines. I started flipping through the latest issue of GameInformer and stopped twice. First was to stare at a Resistance 2 ad, DO WANT! The second was when I came across the game Fuel.

To put it bluntly, it is another off-road racing game. When did this become so popular? It almost feels like a fad for this current generation cause with all the HD you can almost see all the dirt particles since that is what is necessary in games. But this off-road game has a new gimmick...weather. Watch the video...

OKay, so weather can change even though in the magazine (and seemingly in this video) it all looked the same besides the occassional tornado in the background. Its other "gimmick" is drive anywhere you want at any time. Isn't that what Burnout Paradise does? I suppose a difference is one is city locked and the other is anywhere. But I guess I don't understand the whole "drive anywhere you want in aRACING game" angle. Isn't the whole point of racing games is to, well I don't know...RACE to a particular point? Could be just me though.

Isn't part of the rush of racing games the competition and the speed and precision you have to beat out your enemy. Eliminating that feels like eliminating the fun. Randomly driving around does not equal competition. Unless you want to see who can drive around the most randomly. Now that might be a sight to see!

It is wierd to feel like this market is flooded with these games. And I don't want to say it was the first but it seems to have started with Motorstorm. Yes, I know there were those Colin McRae games before (my brother loved them), but I feel that Motorstorm started it with this generation. Then we got DiRT, and the most immediate flood we got was from Pure (which I still want to play), BAJA: Edge of Control, and upcoming titles Motorstorm: Pacific Rift and Scores International: BAJA 1000. I feel smuthered and covered beyond believe with this sandstorm of games.

This Fuel game is not expected anytime soon, so that is a relief. But am I the only one seeing the wave here? I mean I still see MX vs ATV Untamed around lots of places. What is a racer to do? And why so popular?

That first guy looks like Flea from RHCP. Also, it's hilarious that they are giving a racing game an edgy, "post-apocalyptic" story.

The only off-road racing game I want is Mad Max.

I don't know, it looks pretty cool and I'm open to more offroad racing games considering the latest batch (Pure, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Dirt) have been pretty good. Not to mention this looks like the same crew from the Dirt team so quality is paramount.

You know, they make games. People buy them. I don't understand your concern.

Dirt was good so I think this has a chance to be good too.

What about when Medal of Honor first came out...did you like it when the rush of 2038 WWII games were hitting us? Oversaturation? Tired of seeing a bunch of devs doing the same thing? Want more variety and different games?

That is my concern.

If developers are gonna keep being unimaginative and derivative, they might as well start working on another Road Rash. It'll sell bazillions, and be awesome.

You are right. I honestly thought you meant "Pure" but you said "Fuel". Not to be confused with "Dirt". I quit.

Well, if you think that the market is over saturated with redundant games, lets not talk about them and lets not buy them. Lets talk about games that are different.

It's ironic that you don't understand why some developer would put out another "off-road racing" title, but you don't see a problem with someone looking forward to the "next human vs alien shooter" game. How many of those have been released?

Oooo, Resistance 2 stab!

Hmm, how many human vs alien shooter games recently...let's see you got...well there is...but what about...you know, I could be wrong but I can't think of the last alien shooter that came out. So your case holds no water.

My bad, you might be able to consider Dead Space to fall in that category, but it isn't exactly aliens...
