Did Gordon Freeman ever wear a helmet?
BlindsideDork | 12:18 PM on 09.19.2008 32 comments

The most obvious answer is no. But before someone brought up an interesting point about how someone wouldn't be able to survive being near radition cause he has no helmet, which doesn't make it a bad suit. There could be other reasons like some invisible mouth piece/face guard, or he could wear a helmet.

But the HEV has no helmet you say. Well on my last play through the game I noticed something in the world Xen. Actually quite a few somethings are laying around. I just happened to have a camera handy and...well take a look at these.

Jigga, what was that? A HELMET! And that isn't the only one...

Aww, he has got a friend to die with him. And I found another.

There are of course more than these few littered around in this alternate world. Which begs the question on if he ever wore the helmet. There are no pictures of him wearing the helmet but there are also no pictures of him not wearing the helmet (besides the front cover). For all we know he could be wearing a helmet or he just takes it off when talking to friendlies.

Hey, it could happen! You just can't be too sure. Unless I am wrong and then you are sure.

I always thought he did wear a helmet. Well, I did until I typed that one developer command to where you could see Gordon in third-person and saw that he actually wasn't wearing one.

He has to have worn a helmet, otherwise the suit wouldn't function as it's supposed to. They must have just declined to make it look like a visor like they did in Metroid Prime and Halo 3. That, and when you pick up the suit in Half-Life, you clearly see a helmet on the suit, and there's no helmet that falls to the ground.

The helmet is only on his head when your not looking.

Just like that tree in the forest or those gnomes in your fridge turning off the light.

I know that in Half-Life 2 he doesn't have a helmet.

Also, Maybe its because just like in Gears of War, people with helmets always die or are disabled quickly.

Wouldn't the HUD need to be displayed on a helmet visor... or maybe his glasses.....

Yes, the HUD...or it is a video game and those rules don't apply. :P

In both games, when you pick up the suit it has no helmet (in HL1 it doesn't even have gloves).
He never appears pictured with the helmet.

So yeah... no helmet at all, which goes completely against Black Mesa Safety Protocol.

He didn't wear a helmet in Half-Life 2. I can't say for sure, with HL1. You would think he'd need it, under most HEV-requiring circumstances. The HUD is irrelevant. It's a video game, so of course there's a HUD. Duh. It doesn't indicate the presence of a helmet.

Interesting, though. I'd never seen images of the HEV helmet before.

I personally never plunge into depth's unknown without a helmet. It's just not good form and can lead to unforeseen consequences. However, I think I can forgive Gordon on this one as generally the "scientist" types aren't necessarily that well acquainted with the "lady" types.

I still think this man's suit looks silly as hell. It's bright orange.

At least it isn't as bad as Haze. You could see those guys for miles.

What about when you see him near the end of Opposing Force? I never got that far, so I don't know.

Putting on the helmet is instant death. It covers your face, so you become a generic soldier whose only purpose in life is to line the hallways leading to the boss so the real hero has something to walk over.

I believe it is a console version of the game, I can tell from the hi-res player models and seeing many ports in my time.

It's a hazmat suit, dude. Would you expect it to be anything but a bright color? Would you prefer he wear the real, present-day version?

@Dexter
Good catch. In both Blue Shift and Opposing Force, Gordon is seen without a helmet. So there you go: No, he doesn't wear a helmet.

If you look at the pictures, everyone with a helmet is DEAD. Gordon Freeman knows the helmets are deadly, hes no fool.

The suit could utilize nanotechnology to dissipate harmful radiation to a level that is OK for the human body to accept.

The exact technology of the HEV suit isn't specified, it could be any number of technologies in the suit that enable him not to wear a helmet.

I've always assumed the HUD was somehow projected on his glasses.
I mean, you never see a helmet, and if he had a helmet on, bullets couldn't see his face and avoid it.

How could a HUD be projected on to his glasses? His glasses don't have wires or some kind of wireless receiver. They don't have any obvious battery packs.

Also, Dr. Collette Green and Dr. Gina Cross, the other two HEV suit wearers (only in the PS2 addon Decay - but now avail. for PC) did not wear glasses. Surviving radition without a helmet doesn't make sense, and also, not wearing a helmet would mean that headshots would be much more likely. Think about the one piece of armor that hasn't disappeared from military uniforms since medieval times - helmets - WW1, WW2, Vietnam and even NATO troops. Helmets = protection.

Clearly, the HEV suit has a helmet, but since the only time we see GF is in publicity shots, he has removed the helmet. I believe this applies to HL1 & 2.

Although when GF first puts on the suit in HL2 we don't see a helmet on it, that doesn't mean it isn't behind the suit or that the game designers thought this was a hopelessly minor detail that illustrating it wasn't worth dev time.
