Batman sequel: Deppp and Hoffman CONFIRMED?!
BlindsideDork | 7:30 AM on 09.09.2008 17 comments

I suppose this should be filed conveniently under RUMOR but it does come from some credible people like say an ACTOR in the movie and someone the company at Warner Bros but is it as it seems? Is it?!?!

Michael Caine talked to MTV and he just comes out and says it,

They've already got (the villains) in mind. ... It's Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper.

Well the paper, that proves it all! Just like when they were talking about Catwoman who whoever else. But there is "better" proof. Caine then talks with a Warner Bros. Executive and...

I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, "Are we going to make another one?" They said yeah. I said, "How the hell are we going to top Heath [Ledger as The Joker]?" And he says "I'll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin." I said, "(Expletive), they've done it again!"

So not completely new and not completely confirmed but pretty much? Kind of makes sense but then Depp had to speak his mind on this to throw it into more confusion when he talked on a radio interview.

I heard about that. Not that I know of. ... It seems like it'd be a fun gig for a while, yeah.

Okay, so that one is a maybe, probably? And what about the penguin? Well Hoffman was asked at the Toronto International Film Festival and answered, "I don't think so." He goes on to geek out about Batman and excited about it and ends with this quote,

...of course I wouldn't say, "Well, no, no no." But I don't know the reality of it, so I wouldn't say "yes" to you.

Not sure where that leaves us but the stupid press needs to shut up. The movie has only been out for what, two months-ish? Sure you want more, don't know why, but can't you wait till the DVD/Bluray is out? Just seems a tad bit out of hand.

And I seriously don't want Johnny Depp to be in this movie. He might be able to do a decent job (although I'd rather a less obvious choice, it worked for Heath) but that's not the reason. It was bad enough seeing 7+ Hot Topic kids dressed as Joker at the opening night. With Johnny Depp (who is even a bigger Hot Topic star), they will surely be more "Riddlers" running around the movie theater to facepalm at. I mean three of them even went to PAX. I mean c'mon!

Hoffman on the other had, I am fine with. He could do a good job and make it not suck like Heath Ledge/Aaron Eckhart did. Is it so wrong that I would go see a future Batman film to NOT see Batman? Maybe if they got a new caped crusader but kept the same Bruce Wayne...that would totally work!

I believe it was a waste to put two villains in and deal with both of them at the same time. More could've been done with Two-Face in a sequel but nooooo, he has to be DEAD. This two villain thing almost reminds me of the forgotten years of Batman, aka Forever and & Robin. We don't need anymore of that. Or at least have one be developed and set up for a sequel!

Anyways, you think any of this is legit?

Though the news is unlikely and not confirmed at all, the choices aren't TOO bad for both villains.
Though I agree with you 100% on the Depp Hot Topic thing.
I went to the midnight opening of the Dark Knight and the amount of douche bags there was astounding.
They were all wearing the hot topic joker shirts, which pissed me off even more.
These people have never even picked up a comic before, let alone read one.
These were the same types of kids who would tease and pester ME for reading comics on the bus way back in Middle and High school.
That is one of the only things I hated about the Dark Knight; making Batman a fad.

I never read a comic book either. It's not like you have to, to be able to enjoy the Batman movies and cartoons.

What you described is why I don't go to the theatre that much anymore if at all. Give me a Blu-ray, homemade popcorn (50 cents), a soda (23 cents/can) and press play and I'm much happier than the 40$ spent on two tickets, popcorn and a soda... Plus I don't have to deal with some punk deciding that they need to text the person in the next theatre about how they're enjoying the movie. That or if they're not enjoying it at all, a full on conversation with that person. I don't remember being a little shit head in the movie theatre when I was a teenager. I went to watch movies. Not fucking play on my phone that I didn't have because they were way too expensive back then.

There were about 20 Jokers at Dragon*Con, although I guess that con is acutally somewhat about dressing up. They all sucked though.

Fake to the millionth degree. A year ago, I would have rather see Depp as the Joker than the Riddler, but Heath did such a good job, that idea went right out the window.

NOOOOO! This better be fake: Nolan is a better man than that.He has the opportunity to show the public more of the Batman universe than anyone ever has. He'd never waste that by giving us a predictable choice like that.

You really need to stop posting every damn rumor you come across. Until Warner Bros. makes an official announcement, nothing you hear will be accurate. I mean, I just heard that Nolan was done making Batman films and Sylvester Stallone was going to take over the role for a Dark Knight Returns adaptation, FFS.

I was just reading that about Sly Stallone! Talk about a BLOODY MOVIE. You know what I am talking about if you saw Rambo!

I approve of Hoffman. Depp can go back to being a pirate.

@Mecha

What? Have you only seen Deep in pirates? He's an amazing actor, I'm sure he would do really well as the Riddler.

I, too, was rather disappointed to see Two-Face killed off. I would have rather seen Dent turn into Two-Face at the end of the film, and see him take center stage in a sequel. What the film did made sense, in the context of what the Joker was going for, so I can't complain it was poorly executed, but I'd have loved to see more of that.

I actually think the loss of Dent is worse than, or on par with, the loss of Ledger. More Two-Face would've been great. It's a shame things worked out the way they did, all around.

Would be awesome if true, but it seems somewhat suspect, especially since those are the exact two parts/actors that people have suggested the most about.
