The DS is a perfect platform for adventure games. The touch interface is almost identical to the point and click method. They are a match made in heaven like
Leigh Alexander to Chocobos and
Jim Sterling to Monocles. It should be no surprise when we see new adventure games popping up on the DS. Now fans of the genre don't need those
Super Cards to play some adventure games. I bring you the latest arrival,
A New Beginning.
The first thing noticeable about this game is the artwork. It is all hand drawn and very reminiscent of the old school adventure games which scores many points with the fans. It looks like a sweet cartoon. They see it as "
Broken Sword - if it were done today." It is also said to be a "cinematic, interactive eco-thriller." Yes, I said eco-thriller! Time to save the world people.
Here is the full press-release.
Hamburg, Germany: August 21, 2007. Telling emotionally captivating stories is the declared aim of Daedalic Entertainment. At this year’s Games Convention, the publisher unveiled the first internally developed project.
A New Beginning is a cinematic, interactive eco-thriller. In the classic adventure game an impending global climate cataclysm threatens the world, in a story ripped from today’s headlines, dealing with the defining issue of our time. At locations all around the globe, players will have to try and stem the tide – with the whole world hanging in the balance.
In A New Beginning, players take control of two protagonists and explore the detailed, hand-painted backgrounds. The more than 30 characters are rendered in a realistic 2D style and are painstakingly animated by hand in feature film quality. Many challenging puzzles and adventurous situations have to be overcome to prevent the impending climate chaos. The ambitious adventure game project is in development for PC, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii.
Scientist Bent Svensson has had to give up on his life’s work of trying to engineer an eco-friendly alternative energy source. But his existence as a reluctant retiree is interrupted by a most peculiar visitor: The young Fay claims to have been sent from the future to prevent an impending environmental catastrophe. The only remaining hope is Bent’s research which is about to fall into the hands of an unscrupulous energy magnate. Bent decides to trust the young woman – but is she really telling the truth?
Daedalic Entertainment will present A New Beginning exclusively at this year’s Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany (August, 22-25) to international press and trade visitors.
Overview
Title: A New Beginning
Format: PC / Nintendo DS / Nintendo Wii
Developer: Daedalic Entertainment
Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment
Release Date: Q4/2008
This title has a lot promise from the art direction and genre of gameplay alone. That's good cause a story line about saving the world might not excite everyone. But sometimes you have to take what you can get.
The same company is also working on another DS title,
Ankh: Curse of the Scarab King. More of a platformer and less of an advnture. It is probably save to say that both of these titles will be present at Leipzig, they said A New Beginning will be for sure.
If this game comes stateside, it will definitely find itself a home next to my DS. Hooray point and click games! I am serious LucasArts, re-release at least
The Digg and
Full Throttle and I will give you buttsecks!

Looks VERY kiddie man. Wait, this isn't BioShock!!
That game looks neato...I'll be curious to see how those graphics convert to the DS. LucasArts...Re-release Curse of Monkey Island and I will love you forever!!
We need more adventure games on the DS!
Also, eco-thriller
Sweet.
So, D, the Heart ring... do you think he ever used it to get boob action with the girls?
If not, he was a very useless character.
They should've replaced Heart with Rainbow, because it's gay and so was the kid. To answer your question, no boob action.
Sweet, I loved Hotel Dusk and it's drawn art style so hopefully this will develp just as well.
So, I hope that Q4/2008 means either Q4 or 2008, and not Q4 of 2008.
Looks good though, I've been playing Monkey Island on my DS lately with the Games 'n' Music card they sell at Best Buy.
An eco-thriller ? I'd rather play a captain planet game. I can't be the only one who thinks this looks stupid. You know what it needs, more Al Gore and Man-Bear-Pig. I'm super cereal.
ooh, cool!
