NVGR: Open Letter to Favre - Goodbye Brett
BigPopaGamer | 9:34 AM on 08.07.2008 22 comments

Dear Brett,

How can I put into words how I feel right now? How do you sum up an entire lifetime of watching Packers football into a couple of sentences? How do I describe the times I remember watching you in December when it's snowing in TN and it's snowing in Green Bay and watching you throw for another touchdown. How do I describe the joy I felt that in 1998 we had finally won a Superbowl. Or the earth-shaking moment when you passed Dan Marino in the most touchdowns tossed by any QB and carried that receiver off the field; that the ENTIRE game came to a standstill to celebrate YOUR achievement.

You fucking cried!

Back in March, after an incredible season of Packers football, where we came within a missed field goal of the Superbowl, the first in almost 10 years, I watched your press conference where you announced your retirement. I saw the tears in your eyes and realized that something special was ending. That I would never again see #4 in a Packers uniform. That I would never again see you pull the team from the brink of defeat to victory with one single play. I will never again see you throw snowballs at your teammates and looking for all the world like a kid playing in his backyard. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried a little and was depressed, but then a funny thing happened.

I moved on.

I became excited to see what this young kid could do with the team. Sure, it was unfamiliar territory; we haven't had a different QB start since '92 but at the same time it was fun to think of the possibilities. After he had been sitting there for 3 years waiting for his chance and now it had finally come. I, along with the rest of Packer Nation, grieved and then moved on.

This became our attitude

Then something funny happened. Rumors of your return started floating around. At first I couldn't believe it. I mean, you were so sincere and hearfelt when you told me you wanted to retire. You told me you were tired; that playing football just wasn't as easy anymore. And I believed you. I fucking believed you. That's when you really began to show your true colors.

Over the next month and a half I watched the most amazing poker game played by some of the worst gamblers ever. And in the end, when you went all in and called the Packers bluff and reported to camp, the Packers showed their cards. Sorry pal, but I've never seen two pair beat a straight. You lost Brett. And now, just like some of the other greats in NFL history, you will end your career in a place that doesn't understand you and will never love you and honor you like cheesehead nation does.

What a horrible Poker Player

Yes, we grew tired of your waffling on retirement for the past three seasons. During the past few months we really got to see your prima-donna side of you, that male diva side where you thought you were bigger than the team. And instead of being honest and coming out and saying that you have the 'itch' and want to play again for the Packers in whatever role you could, they would have let you have your old job back at least for one more season. But instead you tried to play the Game of Shadows and Brett, let me tell you, country boys don't belong in the back alleys, having secret conversations. It just doesn't work.

I miss this Brett

So now, on the day that your trade to New York(somehow I think it's hilarious to think about you in the big city) is announced, I find myself glad that it's finally over. I told my friends that we would never see you in a Packers unifrom again and I was right.

In closing I would just like to say that I'm gonna miss your gunslinger mentality, the 'consequences be damned' attitude, the pure joy at playing the game and your win at all costs drive that won you a Super Bowl and endeared you to the hearts of America. You were our American Hero Brett for 16 years. But what I won't miss is the diva that you have become. The man who tried to hold a team hostage and keep them on the edge of their seats year after year. You say you were hurt that the Packer fans weren't that receptive to you anymore. Can you blame us? We no longer knew when you were lying and when you were telling the truth. I wish you the best in New York; I think your new playing style and your new demeanor will fit New York better than it does Green Bay. And thanks for all the great memories.

Good bye Brett

Your friend and fan,

BigPopaGamer

P.S. I think it's hilarious that you are on the cover of Madden this year. At least it never came when you were a Packer. Have fun Jets fans.

At least the jets have green uniforms so you can still pretend right?! lol

This is a very very bad move by Brett. He must need money or have a debt to be paid off to sell himself out like this. Has the many QB sacs fucked his brain up? Why go to the jets? I know they just got Jones from the Bears, buts thats it. Say goodbye to the Brett you use to know. I had respect for the guy until this happenned.

@Jack
He didn't want to leave but McCarthy and the Pack had made a commitment to Aaron Rodgers. Ted Thompson, the GM, never liked Brett either. So when he retired, they moved on. Then when all this talk about him making a comeback started, they stuck to their original plan, play with Rodgers. Now, since Goodell has reinstated Brett, he had to come back to training camp but the coach wasn't going to even consider letting him play. So they basically said, "If you want to play again, it will have to be for another team."

Oh, I see, but still Brett decided on signing the contract with the Jets. I think it was a bad choice to go with the Jets. Tampa Bay would have been better, but I think the reason why he signed with the Jets is becuase the weather will be kind of like GreenBay.

I know Brett loves the game and he remindes me of Micheal Jodan and doesn't wan't to except his age and the new talent comming into the game. I hope the Jets pull some last minute talent on the offensive side of the game so that Brett can at least make this a season better than last years.

i cannot wait to sport a #4 jersey this season, i really had written it off. but between pennington's short accurate game, and the experience and cannon on bret favre, i think it should make an excellent dynamic that will place the jets in playoffs contention (fingers crossed). welcome aboard bret!

Thank God this national crisis is over! Now how will ESPN fill up 80% of their broadcasts? It got to the point of being ridiculous when they put a fucking "FAVRE" heading on their sports news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

Also, Eagles.

I'm glad this is finally over. I had such respect for Favre but after this whole bitchfest of a story it's simply gone. I think Two-face said it best:

The man loves the game. He still gets my respect.

But now, all they have to do is take out the yellow on the cover of Madden.

My thoughts on Favre:

He's not in the NFC North anymore. Now, as long as Adrian Peterson has an unfortunate "accident" not caused by me hiring out a friend to pull a Tonya Harding on him, my beloved Lions stand a shot of winning the division this year at 6-10!!!! Wooooo!
