Well I guess there's no reason to have the Oscar's this year. It's a done deal. And I'm not kidding when I say this: The Dark Knight is not only the best movie I've seen all year, it's the best superhero movie I've EVER seen. Yeah, you heard me. I fucking loved this movie. So here's my little review of this film.
The Dark Knight
Director: Christopher Nolan
MPAA: PG-13
Now I know this movie has gotten some negative reviews and I have read some of them. While these reviews weren't necessarily wrong, the positives far outweigh the negatives here. So let's start with the positive points of this film.
1. Heath Ledger has brought to life a character that I felt was never a true threat to Batman and turned him into an incredibly smart and dangerous individual. Mr. Ledger, rest in peace sir, gives the performance of his short career here. If the Oscar's can give the Best Actor award posthumously, he should get it. And when you see the film, hopefully you will recognize the skill that it takes to pull off the psycopathic character that is The Joker. The only thing that really sucks is that I don't think they will find someone that could bring him to life like Ledger did for the next film. Also, one of the best things about this Joker was Heath's ability to go from the high-pitched laugh and voice we all know, to the deep, bone rattling roar.
2. The way the plot moves and twists upon itself is amazing. The plots within plots in this movie are great. You really don't know what's going to happen next. Plus the writers fit a lot of stuff into this movie. I kept thinking to myself, "Man, it's only been an hour and look at how much has happened." Gotham and the world of Batman is a lot darker and more brutal than you have ever seen....and I love it.
3. All the supporting actors were great. Eckhart as Harvey Dent was a perfect match. Oldman, as Gordon, really has a much bigger role than he did in the first one. Even Freeman's role has been expanded on. All good choices for those roles.
4. I love how Nolan took the Gotham we knew from the first film, that gritty, brown and black city, and really turned it into something different. It's like since Batman has come along, Gotham is a brighter place. How does he do this? By simply having scenes during the day. I couldn't place my finger on how it felt different till after I had left the theatre and thought about it.
Now for the negatives.
1. Christian Bale. He wasn't really very good in this movie. We get to see a more violent side of Batman than in the previous films and while Bale does well in the Bruce Wayne scenes, nothing about his performance here really stood out. He was very overshadowed by Eckart and Ledger. Also, his throaty voice as Batman got old after awhile.
2. Batpod. It was a stupid idea. That's all I can say.
3. The last real negative I have involves Harvey Dent/Two-Face but I really can't say much without spoiling it. But needless to say, there is something about the character that bothered me.
If you liked Batman Begins you will like this next Nolan version, but don't expect the same exact thing that you got in the first one. This movie really deals with what a hero is, the politics of fighting the mob as well as dealing with vigilante justice. It also touched on the morals of people from all backgrounds, as is obvious in the ferry scene. I loved it. This is a definite must-see for any movie lover and especially any super-hero movie.
But then, you didn't need me to tell you that did you?
Ok fine I will tell you what I my third negative is with Two-Face. So I will post it down below in case no one wants to read the
*SPOILERS*
I wished they hadn't killed him off in the end. It would have made a much more interesting movie to have him out there somewhere than just dead.
I thought it was a little nasty, but it was pulled off well...
PM/Email me about this. I'm interested in knowing what you have to say. Also, Dark knight is one of the best movies ever.
And let's just say that I had the same complaint with Two-Face as I did with Venom in Spider-Man 3.
As far as best comic movie ever thats a tough one, this is one badass movie at the same time Spiderman 2 is one of mine.
Either way worth the money.
In fact, that entire 20 min. was pure awesomeness.
With that being said..I've seen the movie twice. Also, I thought the Batpod introduction was pretty awesome.
What I was really surprised was how complex it was. The intricacies of the mafia parts and the way that no matter what, the Joker seemed to have everything planned out. And going deeper, the themes in general were really interesting and well presented.
Awesome fucking movie.
Best movie EVAR.
Also, i bet there's going to be a Batsubmarine in the next one
I was most drawn in by the philosophical arguments between Joker as an "agent of chaos" and Batman/Harvey Dent as the order and control needed to counterbalance that. Then, at the end, there was an interesting bit about the roles of hero and villain that are needed in society.
Joker's scary and commanding "LOOK AT ME!" was the best line of the movie for me.
What's interesting will be if any of the other actors get nods. For all the talk of Ledger's performance (which is wholeheartedly deserved) I actually thought Gary Oldman gave the best in the movie. He IS Commissioner Gordon as much as Heath IS the Joker. Aaron Eckhart also surprised me with his slow but subtle transition into madness.
Overall, fantastic movie. I think the movie itself deserves a Best Picture nod as well as a Director one. Only time will tell...
