Sometimes, my ears bleed. Sometimes, I simply cannot put up with what someone says. While I try to remain tolerant of all opinions, you people can really make by blood boil. It's like you're all hypnotized and when you hear a trigger word, you think that means I want to hear what you have to say. Sometimes, this is true. Sometimes, I want to rip all your teeth out with my left hand. Why my left? My right's my face button hand; I can work a D-Pad with my chin, but I can't go without my right.
These are in no particular order.
Activision
Every time Activision does something you people scream bloody murder. Every time. They merely enjoy a capitalist marketplace and use that to their advantage. If they put out a Guitar Hero game for $60, and recycle half the stuff from an old game, only adding new songs, they drastically cut down on development cost and time. So the profit margin goes much lower than it would for making an entirely new game. And thus the number of people needing to buy the game goes lower, and Activision can continue making other games that make you happy. That's pretty much the definition of sound business practice and customer satisfaction. Are they making you buy any of the games? No? Then shut your face.
Bobby Kotick, Nancy Grace, and The Super Devil make up the Trifecta of Evil.
Shadow Of The Colossus \ Ico
Every time I hear about either of these games, you people decide that I need to hear about how it didn't get a sequel, and how great it was, and how emotional it was, and blah blah blah... I have a policy, if you ever cried over a game character's death, or thought about a moral choice in a game other than 'Which one of these will net me the best ending?', or got scared while playing one of these games that try to scare you, you need to grow a pair. (Gaming enthusiasts of the female gender are excluded from this. Why? I'm against sex changes. That's why.) I don't want to hear about how you felt bad when you killed this innocent creature that never wronged anyone. I do not give two shits about the environment the game puts me in, and how I'm supposed to admire it. It was the PS2, it looked like ass. That's what I have to say about it. Would you rather I have lied and said 'The setting truly made the mood and elevated my experience when playing.'? Signs point to yes.
Am I supposed to care about this?
Shin Megami Tensei \ Persona series
I cannot stand this series. I've never played it, and never seen a gameplay video, or a screenshot for that matter, but I don't like it. None of you will shut your goddamn traps about how great it is, and how I should play it. Here's my answer to all of you:
I will play the series when I'm damn well ready.
I'm not posting a picture for this one, but I'll still write the caption.
Oh, so that's what all this is about. Kind of underwhelming.
Sonic The Hedgehog
Whenever a Sonic game gets announced, there are three general groups of people who anticipate it. The fans who say 'It's the triumphant return of Sonic!', cynics who shoot the race horse before it leaves the gate, and people who see how it plays out. For the love of God, everyone get in the last group. I will end this right now if you do! No, some of you are still being stubborn. Can't say I blame you. Moving on!
This is a comic made by Ben Mangum of Cyber Moon Studios. His website is here, but he's been locked out of it. Check his deviantArt page for more stuff, and his YouTube for his animations. That's probably the most links you're ever seen in one caption.
Jim Sterling
WE GET IT. NOT EVERYONE SHARES HIS SENSE OF HUMOR. GET OVER IT. I DON'T LIKE HIM EITHER, BUT AT LEAST I DON'T TROLL HIS REVIEWS YOU PANSIES. If he doesn't like a game, he doesn't like it. Simple as that. For his defense, he's always got a point when he talks. He never just mindlessly bitches about crap that doesn't matter.
Alright, sometimes he does, but the number of meaningful editorials over his total number exceeds 50%. Meaning the majority of his articles are pertaining to a central point. I wish I could do that. I am horrible at staying on topic! (As you well know.)
Is that a bed right next to a hot tub?
Duke Nukem Forever
Wait for it to come out. Jeez...
Patience is a virtue. This, however, is ridiculous. It took less time to develop the A-Bomb than it took for this game to be canceled.
The Legend Of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time
I understand that some of you will never budge on this game, and I can respect that. I myself grew up playing this game. (My aunt stole me a copy from BlockBuster.) And it does deserve ALOT of respect; All that music, sound, and those environments on an N64 cartridge? It was unheard of! No one thought it could be done! But Nintendo has proven time and time again that all they have to do is snap their fingers, and the skies themselves will open for another miracle. Anyway, it's not that it's a bad game, it's that I don't like hearing about it so much. So please tone down the praise, m'k?
This isn't even possible.
DS Re-Models
Before I talk about this, think about how much money it takes to develop things like The Legend(s) of Zelda, and Super Mario Galaxy 2, and think about how many copies those games will sell. Multiply by 50, and you don't even touch the development costs! Where do you think all that money comes from? Does it just falls out of Mario's ass? (It sort of does...) No, it comes from system sales! And with the whole 'Evolution > Replacement' scenario going on, Nintendo has to make new systems somehow.
When I was a kid, I thought pixies made videogames and super-pixies made Nintendo games.
Half-Life 2
I have heard entire enough about this game. If one more of you says ANYTHING about this game again, I will stab you in your throat.
Why isn't he wearing a helmet? It kind of defeats the point of wearing a protective suit.
Super Mario Galaxy
I have played SMG1, but not the sequel. I already know everything I need to know about the sequel. but the first one just rubbed me the wrong way. For one, it's one of those games that no one seems to think I've heard enough about. People consistently say that it is the best game on the Wii; Really? Have you played every game on the Wii? No? Then you don't have the authority to say that. Alright, I'll count out the minigame compilations and Just Dance. Even then, you still need to play Captain☆Rainbow. Good luck finding a copy if you live anywhere other than Japan! I still want to play that game...
Oh right, Super Mario Galaxy. It was very creative, I'll give it that. But it needs something more than classic gameplay style, incredible graphics, expert level design, and one of the world's most recognizable characters. It just feels like I'm looking at a 1000 piece puzzle of the Mona Lisa with one piece missing. Yeah, it's a great picture and tons of effort obviously went into it, but that one little imperfection irks me. I liked Super Mario Sunshine better. (Fuck those blue coins though. Also, keep in mind that I don't share everyone else's opinion about Super Mario Sunshine. I love that game!)
Did Chad Concelmo say this game was 'shoddy'? You're about to end up in the bushes again, little man. I've probably got about 40lbs on you. I hope you're faster than I am, 'Cause once I get a hold of you, I keep something. Wait 'till you hear my evil laugh.
Weird Japanese Games
I have no problem with people playing and enjoying these games. Like I just said, I really wanted to play Captain☆Rainbow, but having some of the worst sales on the Wii doesn't go well for localization. Do you like Katamari? Play it! Just don't tell me about it. Or bring a helmet. <== See? I warned you this time! I nice guy! "I nice guy"? I didn't even change that, and I'm not going to. That's my daily laugh quota right there. I try to laugh as much as I can, y'know?
Proclaim all countries Japan, and this problem wouldn't exist.
Half Life, Half Life, Half life 2, Halflife 2 Episode One, Halflife, Portal, Halflife 2: Episode 2, Halflife, Gordon Freeman, Alyx Vance, Dog, Halflife.... Ok, yeah, I know I'm just trying to irritate you! :)
Of course, I disagree with about half of what you bring up, but the half I do agree with is golden.
Like female gamers. In general, they should shut up.
I like that Activision was first. That was all I needed to see. The rest was icing on the cake. Regardless of whether I agree with them.
Also just wait till The Last Guardian comes out. Not only will we all start wanking over it like with Ico and SotC but we’ll have to wade through the resurgence of the ARE GAMES ART argument again.
Fun rant!
But, all the same, thanks for the opinions.
So just because I don't care for the graphics on the PS2, all my points are invalid? I call bullcrap on that.
@Corduroy Turtle
Piss off.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
@ Everyone Else
What did you agree with? What did you disagree with? And I'll try to add something about female gamers in the future. If it doesn't come out right I'll scrap it. Fun Fact: This list was originally about twice this size, but it came off even more spiteful than it is now; So I nipped, tucked, and trimmed it to the current size.
Also, never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever hate on a game you know literally nothing about. That's what you did for the Persona series and think it's perfectly acceptable.
I recommend you put your writing ability and time towards something that doesn't cry for attention just because you boast hatred towards games you haven't tried (Persona, Half Life 2). And if you truly think that because Shadow of the Colossus and Ico make people cry and have great atmosphere and choices (which they don't have to my knowledge [I've played both of them]) makes them for girls or guys who need to "grow a pair," then congratulations. You are the reason people don't think games are art. Learn not to beat up on people because of gender or because they can get something from a game that you can't.
P.S. If this article was supposed to be sarcastic, I take back what I said and instead say that you need to learn how to write better. I know I'm not amazing, but you honestly need help.
I disagreed with you mostly on your specific games. I loved SotC, I think you're being unfair to Persona (I haven't played it either), and I don't mind hearing about Half-Life or SMG.
The things I defintely agree with were the Activision bit and Ocarina of Time bit.
The rest I can take or leave. Personally? I'm tired of the sexism debate and hearing about innovation and originality. It's not that I feel there isn't a place for this talk but the discussion never seems to evolve. We've been having the same tired talks for forever. Things have changed.
I think that's what kills an otherwise solid topic like gender roles in video games. The fact that we're still clinging to the ideologies of yesteryear. Let's shake these talks up a bit. Let's stop acting like nothing has changed. I mean these talks are never going to die, certain debates are eternal, but they can't be productive when we keep them trapped in stasis. Certain part of these debates need to die and others need to be rewritten entirely.
When it comes to the idea of things gamers need to shut up about a lot of the time it's because instead of acknowledging where the debate can go, playing devil's advocate occasionally or whatever it takes, we choose to just contantly repeat ourselves until we pound any semblance of evolution into the ground.
I don't how relevant this is to your blog but I assume you wanted to know our thoughts to get some more informative talks going around. Well, there's my contribution. Sometimes gamers don't need to shut up but rather stop, think, and look at the big picture before immediately reducing their contribution to a mere reptition of the same tired rhetoric.
And sometimes we need that rhetoric I suppose. I'm not trying to condemn in absolutes or extremes. Just rantin' I suppose.
Disagree - ICO/SotC. Again, sorry you're a robot.
Disagree - Persona. People think it's great, deal with it.
Agree - Sonic. The old Sonic games were things you could play despite being about an obnoxious blue hedgehog and a stupid fox that couldn't stay on the screen. The new games are things you play because they're about an obnoxious blue hedgehog that happened to have a couple really good sets of platforming levels in the 90s. Yeah, that's how bad the series is as it stands. How humanity can possible give a crap is beyond me.
Disagree - Jim Sterling. His spiteful reviews of bad / empty hype / overrated games make him what he is. Telling people to stop hating Jim is like saying "don't read destructoid" or "stop caring about videogames"... which is ultimately counterproductive.
Never Played, Don't Care - Zelda OOT. The SNES Zelda game was my one and only experience with the series.
Disagree - DS models. Nintendo products have horrible ergonomics, and sadface for design specs, and don't even save money considering all the nickle-and-diming on peripherals and half-version upgrades. Most Wii games would probably play fine on a GameCube, why not release them in GC format so people don't have to buy a new console with worse controllers?
What - Half Life 2. I don't like FPSes because I can't see my feet all the time. Was this game a thing? Why's the guy wearing futuristic armor and swinging a crowbar... it's a fallout spin-off right?
Totally Don't Care - Super Mario Galaxy. Not as good as Metal Gear Solid and has all three initial letters in common.
Disagree - Weird Japanese Games... noby noby noby, noby noby noby noby! doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo de doo. The whole point of modern console gaming is to see what kind of acid trip the Japanese will produce next. Western games are good and exciting and all but they're like western anime... they're missing that exotic element that makes the Japanese stuff feel right.
Disagreed on ICO/Shadow of the Colossus bit mostly for the whole "grow a pair" bit. Getting scared by Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame and crying at the end of Final Fantasy III(VI, whatever) are some of my favorite moments as a gamer ever and showed me that getting emotionally involved in a game is a rewarding experience and for me shows the potential the medium has.
Disagreed on Persona but you don't want to play it, eh, that's your call.
Agreed on Sonic. Fanboys need to get got.
Agreed on Jim. I like the way he writes and talks shit. Makes him a real live human being to me and I appreciate that in a reviewer. I also recognize he is a lightning rod for the site and though I don't always agree with him, I appreciate what he has to say. Also, the comments sections for his reviews are popcorn fun for me.
Don't care about Duke Nukem. It's irrelevant.
Agreed on Zelda. It was a fine game but personally, I got more joy out of Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Don't care about DS. Not a handheld gamer.
Disagree on Half-Life but it doesn't bug me and since there is potentially an episode 3 coming out, the series hasn't worn out its welcome in my brain yet.
Don't care about Super Mario Galaxy. Fine game but I can take or leave it.
Disagreed on weird Japanese games but since my mind essentially functions as a weird Japanese game, I tend to relate to them.
Certainly an interesting rant that so many people agree and disagree at the same time and with such civility.
I don't think theres anything wrong with telling someone how great a game is. It was great, we are gonna talk about. I think about SMG an a regular basis and like to bring it up in convesation as an example of a great game. However shoving something down someones throat and telling them they are retarded, be it for disliking something or liking something, is wrong and too far.
I think Xzyliac has it right about stopping and thinking about something before judging it. Don't let other people tell you what to think and don't rebel against the majority cause you think its cool. Just stop and remove any emotions you have towards the situation. Strongly hating something as mere as a video game, only makes other people angry. Play the game, and state specifically why you dislike it. It works the same when it comes to explaining why you loved it. Have reason behind what you do, and don't hate and treat others like lowlifes for not agreeing with you.
Activision - Disagree
For one thing, they're arrogant (now.) "Gamers will pay whatever we want." Yea, I don't think so, at least for me. And their ruining the rhythm game market by flooding the market with their sub-par crap. Don't like it? Tough, FUCK ACTIVISION.
Shadow of the Colossus / ICO - Disagree
So I take it you've never gotten upset over a movie, or any other media, right? Mmk, sure. Either way, the "It was the PS2, it looked like ass" comment means your opinion = invalid.
Ironically, people will now start going off on the things they love, negating your want for them to STFU.
I don't think people really talk about this stuff, they're just kinda like, "yeah, I like HL2" I haven't really seen any mention beyond that slew of top 5 lists
Top 5 Things I Agreed With In This Post
1. Activision - they're customers are obviously quite happy
2. Sonic fanboys - they're fucking nuts
3. Jim Sterling - there's nothing I hate more than fucking "inb4..." comments
4. OoT - it was a fun game, but that's about it
5. DS models - this is just the nature of the industry, so might as well accept it
Top 5 Things I Disagreed With In This Post
1. Every word in your "feelings" rant - do you even like playing games?
2. Persona - never played it, but I'm mature enough not to form an opinion
3. Duke - lighten up a little, it's all in good fun
4. Half-Life 2 - you didn't state your reasoning, so I won't either
5. SMG - almost everything you mentioned was positive, so I'm not sure what your beef is...
Top 1 Thing In This Post That Didn't Fit Into Either Of My Top 5 Lists
1. Weird Japanese games - Captain Rainbow looks awesome
I cannot stand this series. I've never played it
