If you are being chased by multiple zombies, you have already failed in your survival mission. You should work more on stealth and less on pure distance. Zombies don't tire, zombies don't eat, zombies don't sleep and they sure as hell know how to run after living things. The idea that you need to be faster than the next guy is heartless and shortsighted. Wasting fellow humans on zombie bait is a great way to end your friendships with anyone else who would normally support you. When the zombies attack, out-waiting them is important. They might survive for 3 years max but after that they will be useless. Also, NEVER stay in one location for long lest you bring them upon your brains.
Guns are not your friends in this scenario, EVER. Assuming the zombies aren't deaf the gunshot sound will travel far enough to guarantee you getting swarmed by the locals. Melee weapons are where its at. Clubs, easily maintained blades, and anything else not horribly loud will keep the scavengers and zombies in the dark about where you are.
