Destructoid - Beer Baron Brent's Community Blog

About Me
The name is Brent. I currently live among the residents of Virginia Beach, Virginia. I like liquor, women, fighting, poker, and of course video-games. I am overly sarcastic which many mistake as me being an asshat. I currently do not own any next-gen systems due to money constraints but in due time my friends. In due time.

I used to write for GameCube Advanced, an old site back in the day. They are currently known as the Advanced Media Network now. I sometimes believe I have a Video-Game system as a heart, my arms are the controllers, and I feed on shitty published titles (such as Superman 64). Video-gaming is a way of life and much of the Destructoid community knows this.

I <3 you DESTRUCTOID.

DESTRUCTOID INPUT WANTED. Good Idea? Bad Idea?

So let us talk in theory shall we? Let's say that I have a place. I buy mass beer. I set up various gaming consoles on two or three televisions. And I advertise for a gaming party of awesome proportions. Beer is in the fridge at One Dollar a drink. (cheaper then the bar) and there is a 5 Dollar cover charge to come in and chill with gaming people, get your game on in a household environment, and maybe a few monetary contests set up.

How would YOU like THAT?!

This all depends... are there going to be a lot of random people? because i have found out that if the random doesn't know you, they don't care about your possessions and are thus likely to mishandle/break them. You would be better off with a keg i think... you would make more money that way if that is what you are trying for.

In theory it's a good idea, if you're inviting a bunch of friends who you know well and they won't mind paying. I know with a lot of my friends we kind of have a "I'll cover stuff this time, you cover stuff next time" kind of policy and charging them for beer would probably not make them happy. It might be better to figure out who is coming and then just collect a preset donation ahead of time rather than charging people for beer. Overall it sounds like a fun night though.

sure i want money. it has to be profitable so I can make future attempts. but mostly I just want to create a local gaming community. sort of like a shitty version of a BARCADE.

as for belongings, ive thought about that. when i have this event most things will be put upstairs, only the essentials downstairs. just wondering if you guys seen a flyer about such an event if you would be interested and attend.

*excuse poor grammar and spelling. slightly drunk*

good idea as long as you're watching your consoles like a fucking hawk and also i would just get kegs and charge five dollars a cup at the door frat-style

@interbutts: I’m glad I’m not the only person who saw this post title and immediately thought of Animaniacs.

I have no conception of the cost of a keg of beer versus, say, a few 36-packs...but I agree with Jayeugene: you’d probably make more money if you had, like, 2 kegs or something. But how are you going to monitor it, however you do it? Are you going to have a “designated collector” standing at the fridge, making sure each person pays before they grab a beer? You should definitely consider the logistics of this — in theory, it sounds great, though.

@ bronx

yeah, i was going to have a friend stand at the counter during the duration of the event and monitor beer consumption. itll be in the fridge so im sure someone would just go in and help themselves. and then another friend who is rather... buff... and he would be the "security" seeing as people like to get drunk and try to fuck shit up. i got most of it planned out, was just wondering how fellow gamers would see the event.

slow...down...your...bloggings.
You've got lots of time, don't burn yourself out.

@your idea
I would like it if I knew most people there and if you had Guinness. Don't get busted for underage or you're screwed.

I'm underage so I'm legally not allowed to comment on the matter.

If I were to comment on the matter however, I would totally suggest pooling some money in beforehand to hire some security to watch the games and beer. Or to pay them with beer. But what do I know, I don't have any illegal opinions, just hypothethising, you saw me!

Try to get a partner, one or two. They could watch the fridge and the consoles... Try to get a good place, consoles and the fridge in one place would be the best.

Also dont let too many people in, not the first time. You can get to know the locals so then you can start to grow in other people. I dont know if the idea would be to start a gaming comunity or to make a buck.

Hey, let me in for free, it will cause such a fuss it'll be like advertising.

It's a wonder I'm not asking for cash on top!

Better have your consoles in display cabinets, lest they disappear in a drunken rampage.

Bad idea.
