The Problem with Pro Gaming
BahamutZero | 12:51 AM on 08.08.2007 7 comments

A) We are fat. Or ugly. no exceptions. Although many are both. Camera adds 10 lbs = a pro gaming event with floor collapse issues

B) Few gamers, if any (all contributing editors here aside) have a grasp of tv presence. this definitely includes a certain "world famous" someone.

C) Games are meant to be played. Take the most interesting, awesome game you have ever watched anyone play in your whole life, and compare it to even a mediocre movie and you realize: shit this is fucking boring. until a game comes out where you ride a t-rex through the streets of tokyo shooting nuclear weapons at transformers, watching fourteen year olds poon each other in halo just doesnt cut it. Id rather watch paula dean get fatter. no really, you can see it.

5) marketing at these events tends to suffer from the fact that i) nobody really knows what "gaming culture" is and 2) they don't care. ITS EDGY!!!!!!!!!!!

IV) nobody cares except the people playing. its hard to get a crowd "into" a bunch of people with their backs to them. even less so on television, where you're watching a crowd watch people watch screens. how metapostmodern. how fucking yawn.

basically, we need to find a way where "pro gaming" happens on your own console - imagine logging into Live for a chance to win a massive tournament for money and sexual favors. or, well, money anyway. Or a movie theatre equipped with 3d and a controller at every seat, with a story arc that lasts two hours and builds on everyone's decisions and interactions. At least it would be better than dave and buster's.

Speak for yourself. I am a very handsome fat man.

Otherwise good dissection of the problem. Unless me or a friend of mine was competing, I have absolutely no interest in watching other people play.

Evolution Fighting Game Tournament is the perfect example of pro-gaming done right.

I like your idea about the movie theater but imagine TKers and the obvious THUNDERCUNTS.

I liked watching MLG on USA. I understood they had to show the backgrounds or what not of the gamers, but I felt it wasn't too much where it distracted from the gaming.

Look into a little into PC pro gaming, you'll see that most of the time it's done better and I'm not talking about the WSVG World of Warcraft shit. CPL, although it's having a tough time this year, usally runs good games with excellent coverage via streaming video and community sites. Any "pro gaming" events I've seen televised in the US has been honestly very tacky and gimmicky so I can see where you're coming from with some of those points. As for not being able to get a crowd into it, again check out an event like WSVG, CPL(not this year ¬_¬) and ESWC, those pull in thosands of people every year. If you're talking about getting a crowd of just the general public of course that's going to be harder, mainly because they don't really understand what's going on, they know someone is getting shot at or whatever but they don't know when someone pulls off something big. That's understandable, most thing's are like that at first.

Just finish off about "logging into Live for a chance to win a massive tournament for money" Things like that exist already for PC and I've heard that a few people are trying to get the same thing going for consoles, if communities talk to the right people it may come sooner.

I actually think if it's done right it might interest me. When I think about it, when I played WoW a lot, I used to download PVP movies all the time. When you actually play the game, you can recognize a good player. Now, I don't even want to SEE the crowd. I'm there to watch the game, let me watch it.

I haven't actually watched any live competitions or anything, but I think it could interest me if it was done properly.
