well, I live in satan's asshole aka NYC, and I spend a good hour anna half on the train every day. Some games have lived in my ds for months, and I wanted to share my opinion on the best pick up and play DS games for that ride. I love the ds because the battery life is kickass and theres that whole "close up the clamshell and your game is paused" for mad scrambles out of the train before some homeless guy vomits on your shoes. interesting fact: I have named several of my favorite homeless regulars:
1. Dust Monster - "sprrr sum change. sprr some change" this hulking monster is straight out of a hayao miyazaki movie. easily 6'5'' and 350+ lbs, this gentle giant is covered head to foot in a half inch of brown dirt. Where did he get so much dirt? there isn't that much dirt in the whole city. His smell, which at first you think might be shockingly unpleasent, is actually more like a field after a fresh summer rain. go figure. also, he never wears shoes (in the nyc subways!!!) and his feet are easily the size of my head.
2. Paperboy - an older, leaner and smaller homeless, his natural habitat is union square. quite the colorful character, he screams stuff like "accept me! accept me and jesus! I need a sandwich. give me a hamburger, handsome?" His amazing outfit is made entirely of rolled up newspapers. he looks like a sour pinata. suffering the debilitating affects of crack. oh and he smells like someone soaked a dog in urine.
ON TO THE GAMES! (in no real order)
1. Puzzle league - its like this was designed to be played on the subway, the best modes are two minute timed tests. perfect if someones elbow gives you a shot in the gut and you have to close your ds to beat his ass
2. FF3 - I've missed stops because of this game before (looked up and I was in coney island. the horror) the subway is the perfect place to grind for job levels
3. tetris ds. need i say more
4. Puzzle quest. probably my favorite, and the game that has literally remained glued in my system the longest.
5. new super mario brothers. lets just say I wish I had some magical mushrooms for the ride and leave it at that
6. advance wars - another to make you miss your stops. FUCK BLACK HOLE
my problem was to not fall asleep.
that sucks
metroid is swell as well.
Mega Man ZX = NO, too long inbetween saves at times.
Custom Robo Arena is iffy, aslong as you can stand 2d pokemon-esque rpg periods and then robot fighting action
I really dug Custom Robo for times like that, too. The combat system is brilliant. The overworld...not so much. Looks like some kid's final project for his middle school computer science class. My only real complaint about it is that it takes forever until you unlock the other body types, so by the time you do you're so used to working with the starter robot that you're back at square one when it comes to learning how to move again.
Rockvillian, we are rather close to each other I believe...
we have one awsome dude at my stop. i don't know if he's homeless. he doesn't ask for change. he's just always there. and he has this song and shake hands dance thats just mind blowing. he's like michael j fox from the elbows to the wrist, but the rest of him is still, and he sings in this high pitched voice. i've caught myself watching him for like 4 minutes at a time.
Jesus, I can't even contemplate how many stops I've missed due to FF Tactics Advance.
