First things first, the intro to this game is kick ass - the story and exposition are tighter than far cry, it has a good, although cliche parachute drop-in part, and hints at some cool larger structure and mystery. A bit like LOST actually, but I am skeptical to see if the promise actually holds up to the execution. Also a bit like LOST. But I think the following sums up my feelings about Crysis and why I just put it on pre-order.
I'm sniping at a patrol boat about 500 yards away, hidden in the woods above the beach, enjoying satisfying splashes in the water my shots are making, when I am almost startled to see that the palm fronds I am shooting at in front of the boat are actually flicking out of the way with my ranged gunshots. You are given the powerups cloaking, super strength, speed, or armor, and all your weapons are customizable, a great feature. Another great thing is the guns have an awesome "feel" to them - they seem to kick properly, feel physically in the game, and when a shot hits an enemy in the shoulder, he spins from the impact.
So back to the story, I kill or think I kill the gunner of the boat while in cloaking mode. Pausing for a minute, safely behind a palm tree, I am distracted by the expansive environment and I take out my binoculars to watch a frigate bird fly across the sunrise and marvel at the tinted volumetric fog and the details like coconut crabs and frigate birds they have gotten right. Having lived in Belize for a few months I marvel at the polish and accuracy of the physical surroundings. Anyway, "PEW PEW" and bullets are whipping by me. The driver of the patrol boat has picked up the gun, or I didn't kill him enough, and has resumed shooting at me.
"HA HA" I think, "I will kill you when I emerge from behind the safety of the tree so let me pause a minute and activate my shi-"
At this point I am dead, and as I am falling I see the palm tree I was standing in cover behind, shot down.

LOST comparision, i agree. Except we'll actually get to encounter this monster that is on the island, rather than acknowlege it as some black smoke midway through season one , then never fucking see it again in season two which made it completely boring and stupid character development josh holoway PLOT HOLE.

i let my brother play through it after i had my way with it and he approached things in a completely diffrent way than i did. and the game didnt penalize either of us for using our imagination.
that's what makes a good game a great game.
now... if i could get more than 25fps in vista.
seriously, try XP. I heard it runs faster and looks almost as good in dx9

I think you're right about Vista being a pain in the ass to setup. except in my case it would be the reverse.
i'd want to get another hard drvie if i was going to make an XP partition i dont like them partition magic programs. and the 60gigish that i do have free is sort of my slush area for .. "downloads" ..
i'm also suffering a little bit of pride in that i dont want to install xp to run dx9 on my two 8800 gtx's. you pay out the ass for dx10 performance, you kind of expect it.
And an update - you can kill birds flying in formation really far away, and they drop out of the sky. You can then go pick up that bird where it dropped and use super strength to hurl it at the enemies.
Human shields are always nice. using enemies to knock down other enemies is nicer
also the vehicle physics are incredible, controlling and firing the boat's gun is tough, as it should be, because you have to acommadate for the motion of the waves
vandam - your disc is full of porn, is that what you're saying? hard drives are pretty cheap nowdays, might be worth a test, just for shits. I'm running a single 8800 640mb in xp with like 30-40 fps. do you have the 169.01 forceware drivers? those didn't just increase the fps x 100, but actually made the game playable. as in, it crashed with other drivers

I always just tranq the boat gunner, and get past him before he wakes up. But I'm a total tranquilizer whore, so no biggy.

I spent about an hour just breaking shit in this demo. did you find the big drill that you can throw and pretty much break entire houses with? i had fun just hurling that thing in the air and watching it come crashing through roofs and raping a house. also, where the fuck were the gernades?
