Toshiba Corp. is expected to pull out of the HD DVD
business early this week, people familiar with the
situation said, marking the end of one of the biggest and
most-expensive format battles in the electronics industry
since the VHS format's defeat of Betamax nearly three
decades ago.
The decision makes Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology the
de facto standard for high-definition DVD players, which
can show movies with crisp images on big, flat-panel
digital televisions. Sony declined to comment.
Well, it's all pretty much rumour at the moment, with Toshiba not having released anything to the press. We'll see but I have a feeling that it's gonna happen sooner rather than later.
tbh discs are dead in the water, it'll all be downloads soon so this really doesnt interest me, i have no HD player and don't plan on getting one anytime soon
yeah, it is over, basically, but that article just echoes the same thing Reuters and NHK have been claiming for the past 3 days.
PSX isn't doing anything more than making an educated guess. Toshiba's probably going to have this thing put to bed in the next week or two is my guess.
The only reason to prolong it is to help give Universal and paramount some time to prep their catalog announcements for BluRay.
Hopefully DVD will keep the crown long enough for downloadable (NON DRMed PLZ) content to kick into high gear. Europe is ready for it and Asia even more.
This should eventually mean a lot more PS3 sales. A friend of mine's grandpa and dad have both bought a ps3 for blu-ray only. I can see this becoming a trend, much like how the ps2 was bought for dvd-only by a lot of people at first.

If Toshiba still puts money into HD-DVD I thinks it's a lost cause, I see 4 to 1 movies when comparing blu-ray to hd.
