Holy shit that's awesome
THAT WAS A BRILLIANT VIDEO!!
That Christmas Carol was awesome, I loved every second of it! Can't wait!
And this is why Criterion is my favorite!
Yeah saw this earlier, it looks soo sweet, can't believe a forum war erupted over at the Criterion website recently because they're moving to paid DLC, they've given more value for money than any other devloper (excluding Valve). For once I actually can't wait to splash the cash.
@Justice
Are you serious? A forum war? Those guys are out of their fucking minds! They gave us so much free love that it only seems fair to pay for something that awesome. Those guys should think about the production costs more often. I don't think they can use that car for free. I paid 60 euro's for the game back in January and I'm still playing it at least once a week. It's been well worth that money. And right now it's cheap as hell! What a bunch of whiny fucktards.
Criterion came out with a few minor updates. Yes I said minor. You can stop kissing their asses now.
Ohh look a night mode! That would be nice if they had gone through a made sure the city has proper lighting. That's too much work though so they just swapped the sky box and changed the light map. MAN THAT TOOK A LOT OF WORK.
Ohh look bikes! They don't crash properly because the rating might change... But you know they're there.
While I'm not upset about the cars costing money I'm extremely upset over their bait and switch with the island. Criterion could charge 50,000 MS points for their DLC. I wouldn't care but they promised something free and fucked over anyone who bought it because of the news of the free DLC.
You don't get it do you? They released a game that was well worth the full price. They also released free DLC. That was well worth the 0.00 bucks because I and everybody I know (let's pretend here that I don't know you and don't want to know you) is having fun with it. And now they're releasing DLC that you have to pay for. And guess what, it's a whole new island to explore! And not only that, you can check it out in new cars as well. You're saying they should do that for free? That didn't took a lot of work?
"I wouldn't care but they promised something free and fucked over anyone who bought it because of the news of the free DLC."
You're talking about that kick-ass game that you can get half-price now with free downloadable DLC. Everybody who buys games just to get his hands on free stuff is out of his fucking mind.
You just want to start a flame war here or you're just acting silly.
That was both lame and awesome at the same time.
Great video, but guys seriously, this is the internet. Serious comments only. No one ever says stupid things on the internet.
@Iron Dragon
Dude, they're a gaming company--they need to make money.
They've given out a lot of free stuff already. I'm more than happy to pay for premium content. No one is making you buy it, and the game is just as complete without it.
Criterion is a for profit company, and not a charity. How hard is that to understand?
So this whole year was preparing us for this. Nice strategy, getting people to see your downloadable content is worth it by giving them some for free.
I'd be buying some if I had Burnout Paradise.
Why is it that everyone of you thinks this is a gift and great act of charity? Get with the program people. It's a fucking marketing campaign to sell more copies of the game. The "Year of Paradise" my ass. It's now what? The 6 months of paradise?
I'm so sick of people letting companies get away with misleading people. Criterion lied to it's customers and you think it's ok because they need to make a profit. Poor company... I think I'm going to cry.
This his whole free DLC scheme was a way to make money to begin with. More people buy the game, more people see in game ads, etc. A flat DLC fee isn't the only way to make money.
The "Year of Paradise" my ass. It's now what? The 6 months of paradise?
I'm pretty sure it came out in January.
This his whole free DLC scheme was a way to make money to begin with.
I'll have to check my dictionary, but that sounds paradoxical.
@Iron Dragon
They're a company, so of course they're trying to make money. That's what companies do!
dude......... I WANT A DELORIAN!!!
Fucking Brilliant.
Iron Dragon is an asshole.
That's all I'm saying.
IronDrragon sucks balls.
So what if they even did promise free DLC. Maybe they just couldn't deliver it. They probably need the money. Anyone who has enjoyed this Burnout will shut the hell up and pay for the DLC to help finance the development of a new Burnout.
Yes how dare I not instantly fall in love with a company for giving people a few minor things free. I know it's rare for console gamers to get extras but that doesn't mean you have to suck the company off when they do.
Fuck I remember when shit like this was standard with developers. Valve, Epic (Old-Epic. New Epic sucks), etc. Even the battlefield games had extra maps here and there in the patches. Hell Halo as a series has gotten much better free DLC than what criterion has given out.
Where's the parade for Bungie and Valve?
All Criterion did was polish up a few thrown out concepts they had left over from development of paradise. It probably cost them next to nothing to do it. Hell they've got a team working on the PC port right now so guess where some of that budget is coming from? They had everything to gain with this marketing campaign.
What Criterion is doing isn't that great. It's just that every other company is completely fucking people over with DLC (Namco, New-Epic, etc) which in comparison makes Criterion look great.
Maybe I am an asshole. I don't disagree. I don't see why I should put up with Criterion going back on it's word though.
I love how this blog was about the topic we are debating.
My first comment was :D
Iron Dragon, I see what you are saying, but you are looking at it from the wrong perspective; Criterion didn't owe anybody anything. They released a fucking great game, and they could have just left it at that and said "fuck it we got our money from the sales". But they didn't, and whether or not their intent was to give a "gift" to gamers or to make money is a moot point.
Believe it or not, just because you think the free DLC from them thus far is worth nothing, doesn't mean everyone else thinks that way. Hell I don't even use the bikes, but my friend absolutely loves using them.
They released a great game. Then released free, fun and quality DLC in the form of extra races, extra vehicles and environmental changes, and you think you should be getting more?
"What Criterion is doing isn't that great. It's just that every other company is completely fucking people over with DLC (Namco, New-Epic, etc) which in comparison makes Criterion look great."
Name another current gen game that has as much free DLC as Burnout paradise.
See there are two views on this.
People who bought it day 1 for $60 really have no beef with criterion for the island and didn't get screwed over because they never expected it. I'm sure most of you share this view.
However people who however bought the game after criterion said the island would be free did get screwed over if that was in any way shape or form a deciding factor. For me it was and I returned the game. Thankfully it was within 30 days.
Yes I understand it's a business. The legendary cars for example I have no problem with. Criterion never presented them as free content. The island however was the highlight of their free content campaign and now it's probably going to run people $10.
I'm not sitting here praying Criterion goes out of business or anything. I still enjoy the burnout games. I just think this was a dick move by Criterion. They should have just released it free anyway and continued with their premium legendary cars.
As for games with as much free DLC... I'd say Halo 3 and TF2 pop in to mind right away. Halo 3 currently has 4 free maps and TF2 has a ton of stuff. Laugh at the free Halo maps but I know I'd probably get a ton more time out of those maps than all of Burnout DLC combined.
To be honest not many current gen games have been expanding on content. DLC on the 360 and PS3 has pretty much confirmed it's ok to screw over your customers. Offer them 1/100th the content for 1/6th the price of the game and they'll happily pay.
