**Sorry for not updating this series yesterday. I didn't want it bogged down by April Fool's jokes. I'll likely make up for the missed portion on Friday or this weekend when I have more time.**
Here, as promised, is the ninth portion (including my review and bonus character) of my in-depth Super Smash Bros. Brawl critique for Rorschach’s contest. After writing this all out, I realized it is way too long for a single post. I’ll break it down into two characters at a time and release them over the course of the week so you can read who you like at your own leisure. The following will detail my impressions and thoughts of every character in the second row of the final roster, two at a time. So, if you haven’t finished unlocking the entire roster, or have been living under a fucking rock for a couple months, don’t read any further. There may be a surprise or two mentioned herein. I’ll also offer up one or two suggestions for additional characters that I feel should have made the roster or deserve a spot in the next iteration. Enjoy. Zelda/Sheik I don’t like Zelda. Never have, likely never will. Her only redeeming qualities are the fact you can switch between her and Sheik, who I find to be a much more enjoyable character and her smash attacks (specifically her upward one) is pretty powerful. I don’t really like any of her special B moves and feel there are better versions of almost all of them available for use with other characters. Sue me.
Part of the reason I dislike her is because of the skirt/float mechanic that her and Peach use. I think it’s dumb and makes little sense outside of allowing the designers to get around a “fall and have the skirt fly up over the girls’ faces and show panties” scenario that would ensue if they used another method of fall animation. I also dislike her Final Smash. For a time altering powerful magician princess she kinda has a lame FS. All it boils down to is a pumped-up version of Pit’s light arrow. I wish they would have used some form of time-altering mechanic with her FS, like allowing her to “travel” back in time aka pause the action for every other fighter and have her move in reverse across the screen exactly as she did in the last 30 seconds, but now if she contacts anyone they get big damage and fly off while also allowing her to revert back to whatever damage ratio she had at that time. I think it would be crazy to pull off and cool to watch, plus it would have a lot of unpredictability built in.
Sheik, although more enjoyable as a hand to hand combatant, still doesn’t quite do it for me. I enjoy the speed and more acrobatic attacks, but I’d still rather play with someone else almost all of the time. The fact Sheik doesn’t get a unique FS, while somewhat understandable and predictable, is still a letdown in my eyes. Zelda/Sheik = Fail/Fail. Both aren’t much fun to play as for me. I’d almost always prefer someone else. Both need some new moves to liven up their play styles. I simply don’t know enough about them to know what moves warrant introduction. Pit Before I ever bought Brawl, I was looking forward to playing as Pit. I never played Kid Icarus (I owned a Genesis) but the character himself intrigued me. I like his duel sword/bow and arrow combo weapon as well as the fact I knew he would have a great recovery ability. Which makes me sad to report I don’t think he’s quite as good as I anticipated.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I like playing as Pit. I just don’t think he’s as awesome as some people make him out to be. Sure, he has one of the best recovery abilities in the game ON TOP of already being able to fly, but I don’t think his attacks are all that great. I presume that’s the balancing act between recovery and attack proficiency. That being said, I do like his Over+B sword spin. It’s decently powerful and in a small cluster can do some good damage, but it can be spammed, which sucks. The slight slide/push he gets when executing it also helps close gaps between opponents AND is known to reflect projectiles, which brings me to my next issue. The dude has a shield (Down+B). Having a shield doesn’t make sense to me if his sword spin already deflects/nerfs attacks. I feel as though the shield could have been replaced by something less redundant, whether or not the shield is from his game or not. Either that or take away Over+B’s ability to reflect attacks. Either or. His light arrow (neutral B) move is pretty good. It took me a while to realize you can control it, in a sense, but I never find much use for it. Maybe it’s just ‘cause I play using a Wavebird, but I find it rather difficult to balance the “aiming” of the arrow on top of how long I need to hold the B button for distance. It certainly doesn’t control like Snake’s RPG launcher, as it likely shouldn’t (it IS made of light), but still. This means I rarely hit anyone with a non-neutral arrow. I prefer straight ahead arrows for ease’s sake.
Such a humble little sprite. I also appreciate most of his smash attacks. I’ve found his Smash Up move to be pretty powerful and use it often. I can’t say I recall being astounded by the power in his other ones, though. That’s not saying they aren’t effective, that’s just saying they weren’t effective enough to catch my attention. Pit’s FS is decent at best. I like he calls the little angle guys from Kid Icarus and all, I was just led to believe from previews of the move that it would be more effective. I thought there would be a larger number of angels called and they would be better at hitting opponents. I often have people dodging them outright and rarely do I do as much damage as I think I should. I wouldn’t change the move completely, I’d just make it more effective i.e. have more angels attack the stage. Pit = Win. I know it sounds as though I talked a lot of negative on the guy, but he’s still fun to play as. A lot of my feelings come from the fact I was hoping they would make him a more proficient fighter than I feel they did. He’s still a great joy to play with I just don’t prefer him as much as I anticipated myself to do. He’s a solid addition, no matter what, though. Thanks for reading. Come back tomorrow for my critiques of Meta Knight and Falco! Or read my review of the game! Or, if you need to catch up on old critiques try these: Mario and DK Link and Samus Kirby and Fox Pikachu and Marth Mr Game & Watch Luigi and Diddy Kong And my bonus characters who should have made the roster: Mega Man Thanks for reading!

I wonder if Pit's shiled does more then just reflect. I feel like it hsould. I'll go look it up.
You not alone, Zelda's awesome and one of the most fun charecters to play as. She's good too. Her b-air and up smashes are incredible. Shiek's pretty cool too and it's nice to see he got nerfed from melee.
I really don't like playing as Pit though. Maybe I'm just not used to him, but he feels so foreign. So does Meta Knight.
So were in complete disagrience today B-Radicate :P
Also, I know Zelda has become better since Melee, I just still don't think she's that great. The only time I found her useful was in the Homerun Contest by using her Smash Up attack repeatedly before whacking the sandbag. She did more damage than most characters and way more than I anticipated her to.
No matter what, thanks for all the support.
Using Sheik now is like going grabbing a burger from 5 Guys when there's a killer BBQ going on at your friends place. It's good, but, OH MAN RIBS!!!!
Sheik is perfect because all her attacks hit little, but hit fast. Her darts now must be charged and her U+B has a little open window to get hit. The chain acts like ZSS's whip, the tip can deal massive annoyances especially if you can control it. Sheik doesn't have many Smash attacks except for Up + A but thats where Zelda comes in.
Her Naryu's love (B) keeps distance fighters and crowd controls your opponents perfectly. Her Farore's Wind (Up + B) is a quicker version of Fire Fox and also has a hit at the end of the attack so you won't be hit at the location you teleported to. Finally her very underrated Din's fire (Foward + B) is a perfect juggler and detriment to head on fighters. Especially with the discovery of wavebouncing, Zelda can utilize her Din's fire attack while staying a safe distance from an enemy's attack upon landing.
Zelda really shines in the fact that almost all her Smash attacks are extremely deadly. Try F + A, but mostly, try her Zelda kick (Air + F/B + A). If the tip of the kick hits any enemy, its almost an instant KO (if not, they get 20%). Her standard A is the perfect stunner, setting you up for any of her ground smashes. And her air + U + a is possibly one of the greatest unexpected smashes to master.
Sorry I had to write this long analysis, but I feel you almost based Zelda completely off the fact that her FS was complete garbage to you. This is not a shot at you, and I'm sure that you tried your crack at Zelda, and just really couldn't play as her, but I need to point out from a different analysis how Zelda could be good for anyone if they really tried to master her.
love zelda. how dare you speak ill of her, and then say you don't know enough to talk about her moves.
educate yourself before you give your "reviews"
However, blacksheep, I HAVE played a bunch of rounds with her and upon doing so, don't appreciate her as much as you and a few others clearly do. That's fine by me. Maybe I haven't really "experienced" her enough to fully appreciate her, but as a general analysis from someone who has played as every fighter in the game, Zelda simply didn't stand out as much as some others do.
What sucks is that a lot of characters have very precise moments where they are awesome (like Sueng mentioning her Aerial + F/B + A move). My issue with that is that THAT SPECIFIC MOVE/CIRCUMSTANCE doesn't necessarily make them a great fighter. And not just Zelda, anyone who has a very specific awesome move.
To be Win in my book, you hafta be fun to play as AND be a well-rounded character who, when played by a casual fan of the series (such as myself) really needs to be able to shine. I don't wanna jump and prance around waiting for a chance to use ONE great situational move. I wanna jump in and kick ass right off the bat.
Maybe it's just the less-cerebral approach I take to the series, but it's my approach. I'm not sorry I disagree with you, but I do appreciate what you, sueng, and everyone else has mentioned about my critiques. I welcome the feedback. The information is certainly eye-opening, but it doesn't change my opinion.
I've played with everyone B-Radicate, and I do admit some people in the game don't stand out to me as they stood out to you, but I'm sure thats just a matter of style as opposed to mastery of the game. A lot of the times, you get comments from people of the latter. People who think they are self-proclaimed masters and essentially say a certain character is better because it fits THEIR playing style.
I'm sure that if you put enough time and have the right genetic defects in your fingers to master a certain character that people label as "Sucks!" almost anyone can be a force in the game.
Also since I notice you seem to love presentation and style a lot in characters...I really wait for the critique you do of Wario.
Thanks for the words of encouragement, too. I appreciate your understanding and have come to enjoy your long posts in my series. I am usually depressed when I don't say something you feel the need to correct or inform me on, haha.
I can't really comment on Zelda, but I have to mention a few things about Pit, him being pretty much my main. Pit is meant to be a defensive character, not an offensive one. This is why he has multiple ways of reflecting attacks and countering moves, and why his recovery is so awesome. It's been mentioned several times here that Sonic has better recovery, and while that my technically be true, he doesn't have even half the number of actual defensive options that Pit does and his recovery itself isn't as flexible as Pit's, so in the end, Pit's still the winner there.
His Over B isn't as spammable as you seem to think it is, because it has HORRIBLE damage scaling every time you use it. If you use it once, it does terrific damage, but the second time you use it you lose out on almost half the total damage you cna possibly do. And it just kees going down the more you try to use it. As well, it tends to knock enemies around, so unless you land it right on top of someone, it's likely that they'll escape with only a few points of % done.
And his Final Smash is plenty powerful. The Centurions don't do a lot of damage, but they cause a lot of knockback and can KO at low %. They're one of the most powerful FS on small maps like Yoshi's Island.
Overall, you have to realize that Pit is meant to be played defensively. He's meant to survive for obscene amounts of time while building up little damage ticks until the enemy is at high % and his one or two solid attacks(Over Smash, jumping forward/back A, Up Smash) can KO.
SSBB, the hunt for a beginner character.
Since you don't want to take time to learn specifics, and just want to pick them up and enjoy/win with them.
To each his own.
I love her Up+A Smash and also agree that her Din's Fire is very underrated...that thing has more speed than people might think and has a good damage radius, so you dont even have to me that close to use it to juggle...and landing that great kick of hers is LETHAL!
Awesome to know others out there like Zelda as well! Every time I play as her, people always comment on how they never see anyone play as Zelda...and how she sucks.....then I proceed to whoop their ass :P
