Alright, so I finally got around to finishing the RSV2 campaign yesterday with my roommate and I can say I officially regret my purchase of this game. The following is why I do not recommend this game to anyone.
Graphics:
I don’t care how much Ubisoft claims they’ve updated these graphics, they suck compared to something as aesthetically pleasing as Call of Duty 4, BioShock, or even Halo 3. Somehow they look worse than the first game’s. Maybe it’s the fact we played through the story split screen co-op, but I can’t tell you how many times entire textures wouldn’t load.
Game never comes CLOSE to looking this good in split screen. Fucking travesty.
My buddy mentioned over and over how he felt he was playing a Nintendo64 game and it seriously got that bad. Coupled with the rampant slow down, loading screens BEFORE loading screens, and the extra time it took for character textures to load AFTER two load screens… it’s just awfully put together.
Single player runs a little smoother but after playing something like CoD4 that is repeatedly jaw dropping in appearance, RSV2 simply blows dick.
Multiplayer:
I know RSV2’s multiplayer will be different from more recent powerhouses such as CoD4 and Halo 3 by default, but that’s not my beef with it. I like a little tactical online multiplayer as much as the next guy. I just hate how poorly put together the whole thing is.
First off, the matchmaking blows. I don’t care how many times that damn screen comes up telling me it’s finding matches with players of similar skill and good connections but I HIGHLY doubt someone on their third or fourth rank should REALLY be playing with Elite players. You serious, Ubisoft?
On top of the terrible matchmaking, every single time you are forced to quit out of a match (whether it’s ranked which happens EVERY time or from a player match by choice) the game refreshes your searched server list only it somehow FORGETS all of your previous settings (such as only wanting to play Team Deathmatch against at least 6 players) and searches for ALL game types without ANY specifications. Yeah, thanks. Now I have to back all the way out and totally reset everything manually. Smooth, Ubisoft.
Is this the first game or the second? Fuck if I know.
On top of this, they still haven’t done a damn thing about matches with weapon restrictions. Somehow, they thought it was cool to throw in a “ready” button. That’s awesome, I highly support it. However, they don’t enforce it. Hosts can start matches whether anyone is ready or not, let alone everyone being ready. This means that when you hop into a match with weapon restrictions you often get a little message saying your outfitting has been changed, only the host can start the match before you have a chance to even see what the fuck just got changed. Awesome. Thanks.
Not only that, but after you leave such a match the game doesn’t revert your outfitting back to your original settings. It thinks you like these new raped settings and keeps them as your defaults. So one minute you head into a match by accident that doesn’t allow frags or incendiaries, so you’re stuck with flashes and smokes, only to move into one that DOES allow them and you get ‘nade spammed the moment you spawn. Real fun stuff there.
And don’t even tell me to just read the settings of all the matches on the server list. DON’T FUCKING SAY IT. By the time you end up browsing through and finding a match you like the match is often full and you hafta refresh the list anyway and restart the process. Cool.
Bottom line, the multiplayer doesn’t do what it says it does. In my book, that’s a big fucking failure.
Errors:
I don’t know if this happens to anyone else, but playing through split screen co-op with my roommate we got an “unreadable disc” read error every hour or two like clockwork (I also have an external fan on my 360 and it was NOT overheated AT ALL, EVER). It has yet to happen to me in single player on my own, but it did happen to me in multiplayer a few times.
You can never rappel with a submachine gun in hand. Ever. False advertising from the start.
The game just locks up at certain loading points and becomes unreadable. Opening the disc tray and reloading it fixes the problem immediately so I HIGHLY DOUBT it’s a truly unreadable disc. WTF Ubisoft? How the hell could you release such a shitty fucking product? Do you not believe in Q&A anymore or something? Thank god you can just patch it, eh?
In Closing:
I’m gonna think long and hard before I ever buy another Ubisoft title and I’m certainly never bothering with another Rainbow Six title. This is the end for me. This is worse than most EA releases I play and that’s saying a lot.
I am truly and utterly disappointed with Ubisoft in every aspect of this entire game’s presentation. Fuck carrying over experience points and that bullshit. It’s a shitty product, don’t kid yourselves.
/Rant
Thank you. I needed that.
Theres jsut way better games out right now, and this game is not really good enough to keep the average persons attention. Especailly mine...
Do what now?
Stupid, stupid.
@Tentu
His avatar is of a TF2 medic, something tells me he's played the orange box....
the in game faces look like BLOCKS
BLOCKS i tell you . like FFVII blocks... shittiest new gen graphics evaaaar.
You missed out on Splinter Cell Chaos Theory which is one of the best games ever.
And I agree with this 100%, I purchased RSV2 because I liked the first one and I was highly dissapointed.
Graphically the game is ugly as hell, even the character you make is hideous and there's a lot of glare.
Sound effects are ALL recycled from RSV1, even the new guns sound like the old ones, same with the music, they're like 3 or 4 new tracks.
The single player is incredibly frustrating because enemies no longer have designated areas, now there's certain lines you cross and the enemies magically spawn, this gets you killed a LOT and your team are complete idiots, they where way smarter in the first game, here you tell them to go somewhere, they get maybe halfway and don't move and don't shoot back when someone is killing them.
Multi was bad even in the original, the community was AWFUL, worse than any game I had ever played and this one only has a very tiny amount of new maps, the rest are recycled.
RSV2 was the very definition of a cash-in and I was very glad that someone traded me Mass Effect for it, I am much happier with ME.
If by more realistic you mean you hate CoD4 because the guns actually kill you and/or put you on the ground as fast as actually being shot would, then yeah. I guess it's more realistic if that's your definition. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you sit and camp in RSV2. Just a thought.
PS - This was a rant, not a review.
@tentu x: I bought it the day it launched and played through everything on it. It was good. Thanks for the tip, though.
@BSD: I'm not sure. I've heard things are bad with both versions of the game, although my experiences are only with the 360 version. Considering PS3 online play apparently doesn't work AT ALL, I'd say it's the game itself.
@Kyousuke: I forgot to add the fact the AI on the teammates is worse than ever before. Early on in the parking garage level I found that they will not cross puddles. They hate water. They got stuck behind two cars and a puddle for 15 minutes despite the fact I was standing in a clear line of sight between them and I, there just happened to be a puddle between us. Fucking terrible.
