Alright, all. I need your help. I know there are a lot of smart people here and am hoping at least someone will have some advice for me.
Tonight I went to turn my 360 on and got some Japanese disc read error message I’ve never seen before. It was not a RROD. I’ve had that and know what it looks like, plus only the bottom right hand quarter of the circle was red. It was also making a very loud whirring noise I’ve never heard before. I turned it off and back on and it came on but it was still making noise. I turned it off and turned it back on again and it was fine, but I was uncomfortable.
I checked my store warranty from Best Buy and it happens to expire tomorrow (04/14). I packed up the ‘box and drove down the street to my local Best Buy, hoping I could replace it like last time when my ‘box RROD’d, swap out the hard drives, and be back home playing on a fresh console in no time. Well, that didn’t happen.
Apparently, the technician tried turning on the console and it made the same noise for him. He claimed that the noise was indicative of a failing hard drive, not the disc drive. Because of this, if I got a new console he did not recommend swapping the hard drives because the problem would merely carry over to the fresh one. All of my data and game saves would not, however. He also claimed that if I were to use the data transfer kit from purchasing a 120gb drive (which I am not in the market to purchase i.e. I don’t have the cash) it would also transfer to the new HDD. I got fed up that they apparently couldn’t do anything to help me save my data and took the original home.
Now I’ve been looking up ways to transfer my save files from my 360 to my PC to back them up. I hope to be able to do this tomorrow so I can still replace the console. However, I know of no such ways of doing so. I tried plugging in my 2gb flash drive to the 360 but it wouldn’t recognize there was a storage device attached. I am thus shit out of luck at the moment.
Datel's option.
So, I come to you all. Do any of you know cheap easy ways to transfer data from my 360 to a PC for backup purposes. I found a
Datel transfer kit which would require me to purchase a 512mb memory card at the ungodly price of $50 (seriously, Microsoft… what the fuck is up with your proprietary save device pricing bullshit? My flash drive is 2gb and I got it for $25. Fuck you.) on top of the kit itself for another $15 or so, but I know for a fact it’d work. I also found a
Nyko brand USB hub thing for $30 that claims it can be used to read standard memory cards and USB drives but I can’t find anything stating whether or not it can actually be used to transfer data to a PC and back to the 360, only that the 360 can read music files and picture files off the drives/cards inserted into it. I imagine it would but I don’t wanna waste money if it doesn’t serve the purpose I need it for.
Nyko's option.
Can any of you help me? I am desperate. I do not want to lose all my save files. The golden guns I have in CoD4 alone would be worth almost any amount of money to transfer the data, let alone my rank in RSV2 and so on and so forth.
Please. Help me if you can.
Thank you all in advance. I appreciate you guys.
PS – I’m sorry I didn’t post this on the forums, which I know is where this kinda query would normally go. Due to the time factor in all of this I needed to know I could reach a ton of people and get quick responses. Sorry if that upsets anyone.
If he's right about it being a hard drive that's on its way out, yes, some of your files might wind up corrupted. But to say that you wouldn't have any of them anymore is crap. What I'd see if he'd let you do is buy a memory unit and use it transfer your save games from the old hard drive to the HD of the replacement 360. Just re-download your XBLA stuff when you get home and call MS to let them know that you have a new XBox and to transfer rights for the software to the new serial number.
Than, go back to Best Buy (different location or different day) and return the memory unit.
@Genfuyung: I kept my old hard drive from when I had an RROD and never had an issue 'til now. I insisted on keeping the hard drive but he pretty much wouldn't let me swap it out because he was "so sure" that it was the hard drive that was failing.
Have you tried turning on the system with the hard drive removed?
Could it just have been an isolated incident? I'm so torn right now.
Thanks, everyone.
Thats What I would do. I believe that the way 2 year warranties work is that if you take it back within the first year you don't have to pay for a new warranty and if you take it back during the second year you do have to pay for a new warranty. So again, if you find out that it is a hard drive problem, you will be able to get a whole new set no questions asked.
@genfuyung: The guy was a real douche. I'd just remind him the coolest parts about him ran down his mother's leg.
