I need some help from you guys. Seriously.

Alright, all. I need your help. I know there are a lot of smart people here and am hoping at least someone will have some advice for me.

Tonight I went to turn my 360 on and got some Japanese disc read error message I’ve never seen before. It was not a RROD. I’ve had that and know what it looks like, plus only the bottom right hand quarter of the circle was red. It was also making a very loud whirring noise I’ve never heard before. I turned it off and back on and it came on but it was still making noise. I turned it off and turned it back on again and it was fine, but I was uncomfortable.

I checked my store warranty from Best Buy and it happens to expire tomorrow (04/14). I packed up the ‘box and drove down the street to my local Best Buy, hoping I could replace it like last time when my ‘box RROD’d, swap out the hard drives, and be back home playing on a fresh console in no time. Well, that didn’t happen.

Apparently, the technician tried turning on the console and it made the same noise for him. He claimed that the noise was indicative of a failing hard drive, not the disc drive. Because of this, if I got a new console he did not recommend swapping the hard drives because the problem would merely carry over to the fresh one. All of my data and game saves would not, however. He also claimed that if I were to use the data transfer kit from purchasing a 120gb drive (which I am not in the market to purchase i.e. I don’t have the cash) it would also transfer to the new HDD. I got fed up that they apparently couldn’t do anything to help me save my data and took the original home.

Now I’ve been looking up ways to transfer my save files from my 360 to my PC to back them up. I hope to be able to do this tomorrow so I can still replace the console. However, I know of no such ways of doing so. I tried plugging in my 2gb flash drive to the 360 but it wouldn’t recognize there was a storage device attached. I am thus shit out of luck at the moment.

Datel's option.

So, I come to you all. Do any of you know cheap easy ways to transfer data from my 360 to a PC for backup purposes. I found a Datel transfer kit which would require me to purchase a 512mb memory card at the ungodly price of $50 (seriously, Microsoft… what the fuck is up with your proprietary save device pricing bullshit? My flash drive is 2gb and I got it for $25. Fuck you.) on top of the kit itself for another $15 or so, but I know for a fact it’d work. I also found a Nyko brand USB hub thing for $30 that claims it can be used to read standard memory cards and USB drives but I can’t find anything stating whether or not it can actually be used to transfer data to a PC and back to the 360, only that the 360 can read music files and picture files off the drives/cards inserted into it. I imagine it would but I don’t wanna waste money if it doesn’t serve the purpose I need it for.

Nyko's option.

Can any of you help me? I am desperate. I do not want to lose all my save files. The golden guns I have in CoD4 alone would be worth almost any amount of money to transfer the data, let alone my rank in RSV2 and so on and so forth.

Please. Help me if you can.

Thank you all in advance. I appreciate you guys.

PS – I’m sorry I didn’t post this on the forums, which I know is where this kinda query would normally go. Due to the time factor in all of this I needed to know I could reach a ton of people and get quick responses. Sorry if that upsets anyone.

Well, are the people in your Best Buy cool? I think they're somewhat wrong about the assessment of your problem but if they were cool enough to let you keep your old hard drive, I have a possible solution for you.

If he's right about it being a hard drive that's on its way out, yes, some of your files might wind up corrupted. But to say that you wouldn't have any of them anymore is crap. What I'd see if he'd let you do is buy a memory unit and use it transfer your save games from the old hard drive to the HD of the replacement 360. Just re-download your XBLA stuff when you get home and call MS to let them know that you have a new XBox and to transfer rights for the software to the new serial number.

Than, go back to Best Buy (different location or different day) and return the memory unit.

My local Target has the 512 mb memory cards on sale for $20. You might want to check endcaps to see if they have the same deal running where you live. Like Conrad said, transfer your saves with the memory unit and re-download all the XBLA stuff if you can. Or maybe the Best Buy guys will let you do it while you're in the store. Not sure how up for that they'd be, but it's worth a shot.

For whatever its worth one of my 360s did this same thing and I exchanged it at gamestop. The guy said it was the hard drive but I exchanged anyway and kept my old drive. Its never given me a problem since. So in closing, I doubt its the hard drive, its probably a fan. Have you turned it on without the hard drive being plugged in?

@CZ: Hmm, that may be worth a shot.

@Genfuyung: I kept my old hard drive from when I had an RROD and never had an issue 'til now. I insisted on keeping the hard drive but he pretty much wouldn't let me swap it out because he was "so sure" that it was the hard drive that was failing.

I don't think that the hard drive is the problem.

Have you tried turning on the system with the hard drive removed?

@Genfuyung and jdub x: I haven't tried that yet. My issue is that after a reboot or two it worked fine, even with the hard drive attached. I just don't want to not do anything about it and then have it actually shit out on me in a few weeks (or even days). Since my warranty ends tomorrow, if I want to solve this issue at all it'd be best to do so tomorrow, ya know?

I just tried turning on the system and it works fine with and without the hard drive attached to it.

Could it just have been an isolated incident? I'm so torn right now.

Thanks, everyone.

If you get a new one from best buy using the warranty, they should ask you to purchase a new 2 year warranty. so you could get a new system and keep your hard drive and then if you find out that it is a hard drive problem you can then take it back again and get both a new system and a hard drive that time.

Thats What I would do. I believe that the way 2 year warranties work is that if you take it back within the first year you don't have to pay for a new warranty and if you take it back during the second year you do have to pay for a new warranty. So again, if you find out that it is a hard drive problem, you will be able to get a whole new set no questions asked.

I wish I could hear the noise its making. Mine started to sound like a fucking chainsaw and it would actually wake other people in the house up. I would try and go back and get a different guy to look at it or if its the same fuck just tell him that u researched it, its not the hard drive, and his mother is a venereal disease carrying whore.

This happened to me on my magic 360 before it finally died (I call it magic because it red ringed 10 times and all I had to do was unplug it and plug it back in to fix it). All I had to do was unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again. I don't understand why that worked, but it did.

I just played some RSV2 and it worked fine. Sounded fine, too. I think I'm still gonna go back tomorrow and do what you say, jdub x. I'll force them to swap my hard drive and if it ends up being that I'll worry about it later.

@genfuyung: The guy was a real douche. I'd just remind him the coolest parts about him ran down his mother's leg.

Having worked at Best Buy before I've seen people buy something from one store and return it at another. If you could afford it you could buy the transfer cable and software, use it, and return it at a different location. You probably won't get your money back but store credit instead. Its worth a shot, but might not be worth the risk of them not taking it back.
