Name: Josh
Age: 30
Most Favorite Game: Xenogears
Least Favorite Game: Resident Evil 5

At 30 years old you would think that I would be tired of games. However, it seems to be the one thing I refuse to grow out of. What can I say? I can sit down and enjoy a good gaming session just as much as I can sit and enjoy reading through the classics of literature. Also, I write things....kinda.

Rumor: Kingdom Hearts 3? Wii? A piece of me dies in sorrow?
Aurvant | 12:57 PM on 06.27.2008 33 comments

I came across this picture on Forever-Fantasy.net and the topic is the persistent rumor that Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming to the Wii.

For those not wishing to click out this is what it says:

"We'll kick off the next 20 years of Nintendo Power with more big reveals, including a top-secret cover story fit for a king. It's got a lot of heart. Just kidding. It's Mother 3. Please look forward to it."

It came out of a Nintendo Power and, already, speculation has begun that the newest in stallment of the KH series will go exclusively to the Wii.

Can I begin to explain how infuriating that would be for me? As a long time fan of the Kingdom Hearts series I don't think I could deal with the fact that the latest installment of one of my most beloved series would be released on the same system that dictates that a fucking balance board is a "gaming device".

I don't know exactly how hard I have to pray to make this not happen, but I'm going to just start now so that I can cover my bases.

Can you tell I'm in a foul mood? Good. Don't you dare wave your little waggle controller sticks at me either.

I think people are way off-base here. I looked at the sword and immediately thought "Fire Emblem."

i totally agree with you, though from a marketing point of view it makes perfect sense what with low cost of development, mass audience and higher install base.

This gen is going to hell anyway. Meh.

Did you completely ignore the "just kidding?"

I must admit that this would make sense. Kingdom Hearts is huge both in Japan and America. The Wii has a huge user base in both countries, while the 360 completely tanks in Japan and the PS3 seems to be moving quote slowly. And when you look at the cost of consoles versus the average age of the consumer this game appeals to it's a solid business decision. Honestly, how many parents would spend $450 or more for their kids to play KH?

Why are you so angry about the balance board? It's a nice peripheral with a specific purpose. I like getting 30 minutes of exercise and then playing Blast Works on the same machine. And it's not like you have to own one. The Wii has a lot of great games on it and it really caters to old-school gamers like myself.

and that "just kidding" wasn't implied to Mother 3 since theres another "just kidding" after that.

What ever it is, it will be moderately under-over-pseudo-whelming and you may/may not be too excited for it.

@Nilcam - I can't really explain it. I liked the Gamecube, I still love the SNES and I generally like everything that Nintendo does, but ever since the Wii was released I have not liked it at all.

As for the Wii "catering to old-school" gamers I just don't believe that at all. I've been playing videogames for more than 20 years now and the only argument that it is "old-school" is that it features "old-school" character games such as Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.

However, 3rd party sales for the system have been dismal at best and if I wanted to get exercise I would go run around the block for free.

Also, that huge userbase? If it's so darn appealing then why cant anything other than party games be sold on the system? Games that -should- sell (boom blox) on the Wii, dont. That huge userbase is pretty much worthless if everyone is content playing Wii Sports forever.

...wasn't the somewhat sequal but still is sequal to Kingdom Hearts II headed to the PSP?

don't understand why Squeenix would do a BS move like put it on the Wii. Though it does make much sense since it's cheap and overall the best choice for the crowd it's intended towards.

I think you're being an elitist asshole quite frankly. The Wii is perfectly capable of providing us with some top action RPG type action. I just think you're a little scared of the gameplay being dumbed down which I seriously doubt will be the case now that Kingdom Hearts has its own rabid fanbase.

Probably another KH game if anything, but definitely not 3.

I for one am pumped that they might make KH3 for the Wii, but sad at the same time. There are already VERY few reasons for me to consider getting a PS3, and this just removes one of them. I'm not trying to be elitist there, but its the truth.

But some good points were being made up there though, like why the only games for Wiis that seem to be selling are party games. I see no marketing for any games these days,
so I'd say that's a big factor in it.

I will say though I think bundling Wii Sports with the system is somewhat of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, you have a major selling point, on the other, you have people who all they play is Wii Sports.

If they can give me a KH that uses No More Heroes' sword fighting controls, I'll be incredibly happy. Though the miscellaneous KH-esque videos they showed/leaked last year would probably be more awesome on the PS3, since the graphics can more readily matchup with the cinematics.

If they brought out a spin-off Kingdom Hearts game (like the ones for DS, PSP, and cell phones) to the Wii I wouldn't mind but yeah, if the official KH3 is Wii exclusive I'll be pissed too. The sad part is it totally makes sense from a business and user base perspective, but I'm ready for some new visuals and I want the cinematic experience to be as good as possible which means X360 and/or PS3. Also, I don't want to have to flail the wiimote around to attack like I know we'd end up doing.

I don't get it. You complain about the third-party support that the Wii gets, that they shovel out crappy games. Then, the possibility arises that a major developer known primarily for making games that are epic in scope and cater to a more serious gaming audience might bring one of its most beloved franchises to the system, and you complain about that too.

Sure, it's possible that Square could just crank something out, slap Disney characters into it and call it Kingdom Hearts III. Somehow I doubt that.

You have yet to actually say WHY it's a bad thing. You don't like the Balance Board? Don't use it. But other people find it fun. You don't like gimmicks? Must not be a PS3 owner since launch then.

Face it, you know nothing of the game and you can't even come up with a good reason why it SHOULDN'T be on the Wii. Keeps the PS2 graphics and style, actually a bit better. The game will be cheaper. And Square makes quality products so it won't be a BAD game.

@Aurvantoid: I've been a gamer since the Atari 2600 and when I look at the 360 and PS3, i see lots of plasticy looking, brown and green shooters. Most of the games on those systems spend so much time perfecting the plastic sheen and graphics, that gameplay has remained the same as the previous generation. The I look at the library on the Wii and see games like Guilty Gear, Blast Works, Castle of Shikigami 3, Elebits, No More Heroes, LostWinds, My Life as a King, Super Mario Galaxy, Dewey's Adventure and Heavenly Guardian and I get a warm and fuzzy old-school feeling. That feeling grows when I see games like Chocobo Mystery Dungeon, MLB Power Pros, Mega Man 9, de Blob and, especially, Wario Land Shake coming soon. With the deluge of garbage on the Wii, developers have to try really hard to stand above that.

The Gamecube was a very powerful machine and the Wii is a step up from that. If a developer puts emphasis on art design over the number of polygons used games will look much better.

Wrong. I know someone who does the art for the games, be looking for 360. maybe ps3.

This better not be true, cause I honestly will buy a Wii JUST for this game. I want a PS3, KH3 aids my path to getting one, if it is Wii exclusive... No PS3 for moi.

I dont really see that franchise coming to the Wii to be honest, not after the huge success its had in the Song camp. A new Fire Emblem would be cool, but again, its something that was popular in Japan and never really stuck in the US.

My first thought was a Kid Icarus game, but I dont remember Pit with a sword. I guess we will just have to wait till next month.

Why would anyone complain about this? This makes perfect sense business wise, and besides, what's the big deal? You're simply waving your arms around to replicate pressing X over and over.

That is all you do in that game, and that's practically undisputable.

Why is it that every Nintendo fanboy wants every game to come out for Wii? I've heard rumors of everything from Resident Evil 5 to MGS4 supposedly being ported to Wii. Maybe a Kid Icarus cover (since next issue will probably be the E3 issue)?

Also I love KH for what it is; a mindless, fun button mashing RPG-lite with some shiny graphics and kids in funny clothes. But I don't wanna see it on Wii. I think PS3 is a better guess.

I don't love it for what it is: A dull hack and slash with nice visuals. That's it. Besides the FF references, there's nothing there. If we took the exact same game engine and controls and all, but it wasn't Square making the game and there was no Disney and no FF reference, nobody would want that game. The gameplay just isn't there.

I can't believe people are worried about the gameplay being dumbed down on the Wii.

YOU CAN'T DUMN DOWN "PRESS X BUTTON OVER AND OVER TO WIN"!!!

It's already pretty dumb, not to mention dumb.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is going to be no different than 1 or 2: a bunch of pretty people running around in Disney World.

Hell, you want Kingdom Hearts, move to Anaheim and go to Disneyland every day. Done.

Is this really a bad thing? Kingdom Hearts would sell damn well for the Wii's younger demographic, leading to more SquareEnix support in the future. As long as the game itself isn't compromised (which we have no indication it would be as of now), there should be no problem here.

Personally, I'll look forward to it on whatever console it comes out on, so I don't have any personal stake in it. However, if I were a businessman, I'd do my best to get the series on Wii where it could take off.

Honestly I just don't see the advantage of it being on Wii (I'm talking from the game design perspective). Essentially it would probably be the same game whether it came out on Wii or PS3 but obviously the PS3 would look a hell of a lot better and MAYBE take advantage of the hardware (like with physics or large numbers of enemies or seamless cut scenes). That's why I'd rather it be on the PS3 or X360.
