A fair amount of us... no scratch that, almost all of us have had an Xbox 360 fail on us at least once or twice. I myself am on my third 360 after two broken 360's in the span of two years. The failure rate on these machines is deplorable and Microsoft should be doing far more than what it is so far to remedy the situation.
I'm not a one man army going to petition Microsoft or another poor soul telling about his newest RROD (Don't worry another one of those posts will come). What I am is someone who is curious about exactly what the lifespan of a regularly played 360 is. I know the failure rate is 100%, probably 99% dead in 5 years, but I think that us people who game a whole lot more than Joe Blow have a bigger number of RROD's under our belts.
So would you kindly tell me how many 360's you've been through and how long ago it was when you bought your first 360?
If you are feeling particularly venerable you can answer my simple poll
here and I can figure out some some cool trivia like how many flatbed trucks Destructoid regulars could fill up with broken 360s or if our stack could reach twenty stories tall or if it is heavier than Luc Bernard's ego.
@ Cotton
Well in that case enjoy all the 360 exclusives while you can and good luck with your PS3.
A man chooses, a slave obeys!
My buddy has gone through 2, in about 2 and a half years.
NEVER RED RINGED, FUCK YEAH
I'm on #3 now. 1st one lasted well over a year (bought it in Feb. of '07 and it only died on me a few days before PAX '08). The 2nd one didn't last over a month, but it was a horrid refurb that was manufactured well before my initial purchase. My current 360 was built in June of this year, so hopefully it has some legs to get me by for quite awhile.
Got mine in August, hasn't died on me yet.
/knockonwood
6 counting the one I sold to a friend of mine, the one I "borrowed" from best buy for 3 weeks while waiting for #5 to come back from repair, and the most recent one was purchased for #5's busted RF adapter.
I've never had a red ring, consider myself lucky but I've always had that fear of it which has always kept me from fully enjoying my 360. Earlier this year I managed to trade my older 360 (from 2006) for a newer one with HDMI (made in late 2007).
Im just glad I switched since the previous owner that owned it didn't register it and Im covered for a couple of years for RROD warranty.
I bought mine a month after launch. It's never red ringed but the disc drive is shit. It won't open unless a disc is already inside, and to get the thing to actually read the games it seems like I have to give it the beating of a lifetime everytime.
It's bullshit that they won't repair it for free either.
GOD.

Just went and bought last remnant on Saturday, popped it in (after the mandatory install) and got red ring.
Called Microsoft, bought a box to go send it off and on a whim i thought I'd see if I could power it up, and now it works again... not sure what to do now.
Oh, and it's my first xbox and it's a year and 8 months-ish old.
3rd as of last month!
Number two due to red ring. Over less than a year. Hoping to avoid the pain with a Jasper, now.
2 years innnnn.. and none from RROD. 1 from disc tray.
I got mine (Elite) at the beginning of May 2007. The only thing that has gone wrong with it was the disc tray.
2nd 360.
I'm waiting for someone to mention the PS2.
My friend had one go to RROD, and it killed one of his discs, but that might have been the first machine.
The whole PS2 debacle is still a surprise to me, I've had mine for nearly eight years and it still works like the day I got it. Wish I could say the same for all the controllers I've gone through though.
I've had my Elite since June of 2007, I believe. I've taken super special awesome care of it and it hasn't died or shown any signs of dying yet.
im on my third.
one red ringed after warranty.
one got stolen'd.
one was a christmas gift.
On my... second i think
#2,#3, #6 even.
Who are you kidding here? It might be the first and the last time but I actually agree with Heretic.
I cant even get my 360 to RROD intentionally,
3rd in 2 years.
although it was only twice because of the rrod.
3 in two years also, which is why i went to the darkside..well until my ps3 failed on me a couple of days ago...god i miss my megadrive.
I had a launch 360...and i'm on 6th now just last november bought a new one after being without a 360 since may...
Werent all RROD's though my first one was where I booted it up and nothing but a black screen and green lines would go up and down...
And last were discread errors...
I'm feeling like a battered housewife you keep coming back damn live friends...:P
Just glad I own a PS3 as well though...
Im on my 3rd console now. My launch machine lasted about 18 months, I decided to open it up to have a look at it guts and see if I could do anything about it, then they announce the 3 year RROD warranty 2 days after i opened it. lol. The 2nd Machine sat in Amazons warehouse for a year before I bought it, so I got it cheaper than normal. It still works, but does have some dvd troubles, so use it as a backup machine. My current machine (#3) has been running the last 13 months and seems to have no troubles.
Also running a 60GB Launch PS3 and a Launch Wii, both are fine, but aren't used that often.
Numero Uno!
Never had RROD and i have a Jan 06 model!! Play it every day nearly...

Zero. This is one of the main reasons I don't plan on ever buying a 360.
Oh, by the way, my brother's first 360 (purchased Nov. 2006) died on him in October.
The 4th, the funny thing is NOT ONE of my 360s has gotten the red right of death.
The first one got crapped out during a lightning storm when a poser surge hit. The second one crapped out because I kept the HDD of the first one and it eventually became corrupted. The third one Died about a year ago with a single red light. I'm on the fourth and have had Zero problems.
Not one died for the ring of death, I still find that funny.
I'm on my first. Just got the Arcade model last month and its a Jasper.
Oh, and Costco has the best return policy ever... except for iPods...
still on my first one, bought it the day after new year's last year.
2!!! Got it for free along with three games thanks to my PRP.
Believe it or not, I am still on my launch day 360! No-one, and I mean NO-ONE I KNOW still has their original 360, launch day or not.
Sometimes I play nonstop 2-3 hours a day, sometimes I won't touch the 360 for months. But its been going strong, with no problems whatsoever. I'm just lucky I guess.
Im on my 2nd elite. I bought the first in January 2008. Got it replaced by Best Buy in October when the drive stopped reading discs. God bless in store replacement plans :)
Second Elite since October '07. I knew it was a matter of when, and not if, and I bought one anyway.
One 360 from june 2007 manuf. date, died in August 2008, repaired with x-clamp replacement fix in September 2008, still running.
One Falcon 360 Arcade from march 2008, still running.
#2
#5...
#4 Here.
All red rings :(
On an Elite now, lets hope it will last a little longer then my others.
I'm on #3.
Of course I went through 5 PS2 machines...That system was a huge POS.
@Samit
"Zero. This is one of the main reasons I don't plan on ever buying a 360."
That's a pretty foolish reason. Have you never had a gaming system break? If so, I'd venture that you are in the minority.
I just bought a pair of 360s (a US model and a Japanese model) at around the same time, over the summer - not much of a reliable timeframe, but so far both are working fine. On the other hand, I've had my pair of PS2s (again, one import, one domestic, both "fat") for a few years and they're holding up well, so I'm hoping the same situation comes to pass here.
on mah second one, and it's a refurbished one from a date that's wayyyy before the 360 that RRoD'd.
I just keep my 360 in a well ventilated area. That seems to keep it running with no Red Rings. I often wonder how many Red Rings are from people who still set their game machines on the carpet or ground.
I went through too many PSones...
NES... Don't even get me started.
PS2 also...
Same goes for PC's and Macs.
These aren't your grandpa's systems anymore. They have many more components to break I believe. I just think they have had a hard time developing them as something other than a repairable computer.
I hope the PS3 will be the first to finally pull it off.
Now that I think about it though, Nintendo has kicked as with hardware integrity since SNES.
@Jamn
You can lump me in with Samit then because I've never had a console break on me, I had a launch day ps2 for years until they came out with the slim and then I finally traded it in for that. I played it every day. I've owned every console since the nes and never has one broke on me and they all work to this day. Maybe I just take better care of my shit? My 360 is still going strong, I bought it last year used and its the one with the hdmi port, I registered it thankfully guy before me didn't bother so I still got 3 year warranty on it.
Two years and still going. I may put a Livestrong bracelet on top of it.
Still on my 1st one...28 months later (no pun intended)
I'm on my 4th 360. I play xbl A LOT. But all because I leave my system on for about 4 hours a night isn't an excuse for it to start malfunctioning on me.
....damn it's lonely on this side of the comments.
