I'm lucky that I work at a business where a few co-workers share in my interest for all things video games. This leads to frequent lunch-time discussions on the latest and greatest happenings in the news from sites like Destructoid. It also leads to some very interesting discussions on the topic of who has or has not played certain games.
Let me get something out of the way now so that the argument can't be made later... Yes, I do realize that everyone has particular 'tastes' for certain games and genres. This isn't about those tastes though. This clog entry is about folks that flat out
refuse to play a game based simply on a principle. Heck... I'm not even talking about the idiotic fanboys whose only purpose is to bring down a particular company. Many of the instances I'm going to give examples for are much less dramatic than that and are borderline nuts.
Case in point. I'm having a discussion with two of my co-workers about the Zelda series. One of them is a fairly big fan of the Zelda games... fanboy? No... but definitely a fan. We began talking about the series as a whole and the topic of Wind Waker came up. I talked a bit about how I thought the game was very fun save some parts with the sailing. I then touched on the graphics and that's when he chimed in with... "The graphics is the whole reason I've never played that game. I don't feel like playing Powderpuff Link".
I couldn't believe what I had just heard... Sure that's a phrase you might pass off as one coming from an anti-nintendo Sony/MS fanbot... but not from someone who is fairly neutral and is a self proclaimed lover of the series as a whole.
I, myself, used to be this way when it came to console FPS games. I'm a long time PC FPS player with countless hours in Quakeworld and Unreal Tournament as well as play-throughs of most of the other big titles to hit the platform. I used to always spout off on forums about the inferior control schemes of consoles when it comes to FPS games and how I'd never stoop to that level. Thankfully, I broke down and bought a 360 a couple of months ago and was introduced to Gears of War which pretty much took my view that console FPSs were inferior and slapped its dick in my face. Sure, I'd still prefer a mouse and keyboard any old day... but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a console FPS game JUST as much (if not more than most!)
One game that is about to hit us all next week is Bioshock. All signs are pointing to it being the front runner for Game of the Year. The reviews that have come in so far have all been VERY high and there's no sign of the hype train slowing down any time soon. But, if you look around, you will still find people who want nothing to do with this game and, in fact, wish to tear it down as much as possible based on silly arguments like how the guns look literally like pieces of junk (intended... art deco / dystopia feel), or how the game can be completed in anywhere from 12 to 20 hours depending on the skill level of the player and the difficulty of the game. There are plenty of other insane arguments (especially considering that 99.9% of the population out there has yet to play the game... damn you lucky bastards). You'll always have those who want to do nothing but tear down a game which is destined for greatness only because it appears on the system they abhor (I'm looking at you Sony bots)...
Can't we all just get along? Wait... that's been used before. Can't we all just agree that a GREAT game is GOOD for GAMERS? Don't limit yourself from trying something out of the ordinary. Don't discount a game simply because you CAN. Don't write off a game simply because you wan't to be the only guy on the block that doesn't like it and you need to feel like a rebel. When enough people say something is great... there comes a point when you have to tell youself "That many people can't be wrong... can they?"
I'd like to hear your personal tales of dealing with folks who refuse a game based on a silly principle. I'd like it even more to hear from you guys about your personal stories of overcoming views like this of your own and how they panned out to be unfounded when you realized that the game you once wrote off for silly reasons
was actually just as good as everyone else has been saying.
But this is a pretty good article, non-the less. Great write up dude.
My conscience ate at me for a week, till not too long ago. I made my decision, I felt tired of these major titles squeezing the life out of a genre. Not because of fandom, but the overeaction its the "best thing since sliced bread!" I felt sick of hearing things like that nonstop.
Last week I traded in my copy of Gears, and the other day Halo 2. I feel cleansed in a sense. But abused, by my own hobby. I'm not sure I will ever get over this, but somehow I will. I've tried to fathom with playing Metroid and the Bioshock demo. (which both in retrospective celebrate storytelling in similar ways) I commend Metroid for the longest time of escaping the norm, but it seems that BioShock is its new baby brother.
If there's a time for someone to branch into the nexgen, that time is now. Forget what burned you in the past, give yourself a fresh start, and pan away all your doubts, and just enjoy games again. Dont join the bandwagon, explore whats out there.
Speaking of which, who's up for highest difficulty from day 1 four player co-op halo 3 on release day? :)
^^ I'd never dream of uttering those words a few years ago and would flat out refuse to believe it was me saying them.
So what about Madden? Lol
Unfortunately you are always going to find people that just want to be contrary so that they might stand out in some meager way.
I personally am not that interested in Bioshock. Sure i played the demo and can recognize that it is obviously a quality game. But to be honest something about just doesnt grab me and i probably wont rush out to buy it anytime soon. Having said that though i don't denounce the great reviews of the game (ie: all of them) and wouldnt have a problem if made game of the year. Its just not gonna make my list of game of the year.
-One of the points of sports is exercise
-Most of them are EA and I don't trust them
-Im busy playing other games
Does that make me an unreasonable person?
I find this a perfectly good reason as a consumer (with choice) and my only way to voice my opinion without going and pulling a Jack Thompson to show that I am not gonna take it!
Their piss poor handling of iteration after iteration makes me feel dirty just thinking about purchasing the game. We as gamers have to stand up (or sit down and play other games) and not allow companies to get away with this sort of crap.
I love Destructoid and everything but the fact that the banner for the site was Bioshock for over a week makes me feel idk just weird about purchasing the game now. I am going to get it no doubt but I just feel a little run amuck, or bamboozled a little bit.
Also, good point and good post.
Er, anyway... something I've done this to and went back on my word? Most notably is probably Time Splitters. As if you couldn't tell, I've always been pretty sour with regards to console FPS, and my friend just wanted me to play co-op in TS. I told him "no, no, it's a console fps, it's going to suck" yadda yadda, but I finally caved in after like 2 weeks and had an absolute blast with it - terrific game.
Also, on the topic of MMO's, I think gamers who say they refuse to play an MMO because "once they buy it, they shouldn't have to pay for it" is the most blatantly retarded thing of all time. Ok, so you're not willing to pay $15 a month for something that you may be so hopelessly addicted to that it's the only game you'll play for months - but you'll go out and buy 2+ "beat it in a week" console games a month? right.
Oh, another one is people who don't understand the publisher/developer concept. Now, I hate EA as much as the next guy, but my head tends to explode when I hear a gem like "Crysis looks great, too bad it's being developed by EA".
It would be nice if people could all just agree that good games are ,well, good. Theres so many out there that love to say how crap a game is, just because they dont like it, or because theyre jumping on a bandwagon, or just for the sake of it. Theyre really getting annoying.
Good for you and trying console fps'!! I started there, the halo 2 system link gatherings we used to have every other weekend were some of the best times of my life. After moving to pc i guess i have to admit that the mouse is better for aim purposes, but theres nothing wrong with the controller, i love how smooth and natural manoeuvreing is. Halo 3 will be great! I need to get my ass in gear and get a 360 :P
