Damnit. Damnit, damnit, damnit. What the hell have I done?
Yup this is another one of those posts about someone buying a Playstation. Hopefully I can add a little more to the subject so it isn't completely redundant.
So yes I bought the PS3 mere hours ago and I thought I'd share some tips for anyone else planning on buying one and some early impressions
First, although I consider myself video game neutral if anything I was a Microsoft fanboy, so much like a young man after his first sexual encounter with a transvestite, I sit here in my room confused, questioning myself, and searching myself for crabs. Not 24 hours before the purchase I was complaining to a friend about Sony and yammering how I don't want to buy the PS3 for potential, I want to buy it because it is warranted right then.
So what changed my mind? The "price drop"? Somewhat. Full backward's compatability? A little. Unexpected money in my pocket? Most definitley. I recieved some money completley out of left field yesterday (post sony rant) that suddenly made all my complaints about the PS3 (no rumble, continuous PR mistakes, no games, so damn expensive, talladega nights!) seem much more insignificant than previously thought.
So (very) early impressions. You know how everyone that buys a PS3 says that the online store sucks. They aren't joking, seriously. It is clunky, slow and hard to navigate. And to top it off, once you download a game demo (Ninja Gaiden Sigma for example) you don't get to play it once it's done downloading, first you have to install what you've downloaded. It's not a big deal but it's a hassle and caught me off guard. After being on the Xbox live marketplace for over a year I fear I've become spoiled.
One thing I wish I knew before I bought that black bastard (no offense Electro) is that even though the 60 gig ps3 is fully backwards compatible you have to buy a $15 accesory to transfer your saved games from a ps2 memory card to the ps3. All this time I figured with so many sd card and memory stick slots in their system they would throw in a standard memory card slot like every other PS console to exist. Go figure.
So if anyone has any tips for a new PS3 owner feel free to share. I already picked up the Super Stardust HD (geometry wars for the ps3) since everyone on 1up seems to cream their pants at the mention of it. Any good 3rd party games that I might not of heard of that are worth a look at?
In any case, you're right, the online store pales before the xbl. I also own a Wii and their store is even worse. I'm assuming that the reason their download/install methodology is so obtuse has to do more with bandwidth than anything else.
Of the games out right now, there's none that I really am terribly interested in playing or recommending. People will tell you Darkness or Resistance, but I never really cared for FPS on consoles (Part of the reason I left the XBOX).
I picked up Calling All Cars, Super Stardust HD, and flOw. I love them, especially flOw witht he sixaxis controls. I think publishers really don't know what to do with the SixAxis, but the potential is amazing. Imagine a racing game where you can stear by using your controller as a steering wheel (beats the heck out of Wii's vibrator).
I don't mind waiting for the good games to come out because I've never owned a PS2, so full backwards compatibility is a big deal for me.
In any case, what I'm trying to do right now is to go through every Metal Gear game so I can be well versed on the story line before MGS4. That's "The Twin Snakes" on the Wii, and the other remaining two on the PS3. Good luck!
Also try screwing around with old ps2 games and test out upscaling & smoothing.
Also, If see if you can borrow someone else's Ps2 memory card adapter. Unless you want to still use your ps2, you will only need it once.
Super Stardust is fun, though, huh? I had a chance to play it a couple weeks ago and I had a blast. I might even venture to say I like it just as much as Geometry Wars.
