Bitching about something they did on purpose and plan on keeping that way does ZERO to help you. It's the way it is. Get over it.
No seriously, get the fuck over it. If you don't want to use the online services provided with Gold membership, why are you even bothering to keep your console online at all?

If you account has regressed to a Silver account, just either wait or forget about the demo. The full game is out soon anyway.
I once did a blog on Dtoid about whether Live should just be free, and in some cases I think it should be. MS want more players online but for some reason still make you pay for what other give for free. Still despite this, I still like the service.
What MS need to do is provide an update for Live, that flashes onscreen when you account is due to expire, everytime you attempt to log online, that way if you ignore or switch those alerts off, you only have yourself to blame. MS do this with bloddy Windows, so why on earth is it so hard to stick the same option on Live.
Last time I checked, that's how you sell a product. It seems to have worked in Microsoft's favor up to now.

I barely play online either, I still think gold account is worth for the demos, this week alone I've gotten 3 which I've enjoyed the hell out of.
Its only fair, we pay for a particular service, we get certain bonuses for that service, want the same? Shut the fuck up and pay the 50 bucks, its less than a full price 360 game costs and its for ONE YEAR.
Otherwise don't complain. Money talks dude. MS is trying to build it's own gaming economy where things have actual value. This is why they insist on charging for everything. They are greedy, and as Gordon Gekko once said: Greed is Good.
