I make movies and am trying to break into the film industry. Maybe one day I'll be able to adapt a game or an anime for that matter to film successfully. Who knows.
I'm attempting to become involved w/ the d-toid community more. because it's such an awesome one. and also working on College stuff here @ Penn State.
First system i ever had was a Genesis, which i still play Sonic 2 on once in a while. But the PS1 is gathering dust w/ the ddr pads for it. The GameBoy Color was the first system that I played nonstop, Specifically Pokemon Red, Tetris, and Kirby's Dream Land 2.
Currently Rocking a 360 and a Wii, and some PC games that run on Mac, because I needed the Mac for my film major here at college.
I enjoy a good rpg and platformers, and arcade style racing/sports games. Also have been caught playing Shooters of the First and Third Person Variety.
Thanks for reading this you you did, and Rock On! I hope to meet fellow D-Toiders in the future somewhere in person.
So I recently got Brentalfloss's first compact disc in the mail, thanks to my pre-order of it. It's also Signed by the man himself which was a nice little pre-order bonus. Now I know a lot of people here on Destructoid have mixed opinions of what Brentalfloss does, or at least the quality of his past music. I'm going to dive into a review of sorts to give you all a taste of what to expect from the cd if you happen to purchase it for yourself.
If you want a short form answer, if you like Brentalfloss's past material, you will more than likely love the cd. But if you want a more indepth look, let's dive in shall we?
There is no larger size of this on the internet and my scanner is busted
The cover is pretty nice with 8-bit style font proclaiming "What if This CD... Had Lyrics?" in the air and "brentalfloss" across the bottom. Brentalfloss is riding Rush from Megaman (also known as Rockman) through the sky in triumph it seems.
We also have a Parental Advisory Square because of explicit lyrics. Nothing new there, if you've heard any of his past stuff, but it's nothing traumatizing for younger ears regardless in this day and age.
The back features a track list and some art showing Brentalfloss in costumes from many of the games his songs come from.
I was too lazy to take a picture of the cover now that i think about it...
The disc itself is essentially the cover, but the inside of the case has liner notes with a link to the cd's lyrics and a cd-case size rendition of Brentalfloss's head behind the disc.
But enough talk about the packaging what about the tracks?
1. Ducktales with Lyrics
It's a total revamp of the original track. (which is from the Moon level of Ducktales on the SNES) It's given a rocking rendition, feeling like a great high energy open to any cd.We here the twinkle of space in the background to give us a nice callback to the original version. Playing loose with the tune, while working in a whole new set of lyrics extending the song nicely. (Not the only track to receive this treatment)
It's better than the original version no question but i love them both.
2. Gypsy Tetris
A simple interlude that turns the classic Tetris theme into a gypsy sound jingle.
3. Tetris with Lyrics
Another high energy track here, featuring a lot more bleeps than were seen in Ducktales, it's a solid retooling of his original song. (which is about how tetris is for chicks, very tounge-in-cheek) Enjoyed the fleshing out this tune got as well.
It's about on par with the original version, but I like this one more.
Now this is one of the completely new songs here. It's about Corey from ScrewAttack it seems. I'm not super familiar with the site myself, but it's a ballad of sorts that has a lot of innuendo in it. It's a nice change up from the other stuff. It's not my favorite song but it's a nice changeup.
5. Final Fantasy Victory Theme with Lyrics
This is back to the high energy stuff. short and sweet like the first version. it's about the same as the original but with some nice flourishes added.
6. Good Example
Brentalfloss is showing some rapping here. Talking about what i assume is a friend of his from the lyrics. He's showing some pretty nice skill here. It's a decent rap (from my limit knowledge of the stuff) it's not super awesome but showing off his diversity again.
7. Mega Man 3 with Lyrics
Now this is what i'm talking about. The rocking rendition of the song that made Brentalfloss big on the internet. It's the extended version that he released more recently, but gotta say it's full of nice power and energy.
Loving it. Possibly surpassing the original version.
8. Bubble Man with Lyrics
This is a rocking version of Bubble Man's lyrics. Sung from his point of view. Pretty solid track. Showcasing how much Bubble man wishes to be a real villain.
9. Final Fantasy Classic with Lyrics
Here comes another cool down song. Set to the epic song of Final Fantasy. it's still really kickass, but a lot slower than a lot of the other songs have been aside from Corey. It's really solid, wouldn't call it a ballad so much but it's similar in some respects. Rock Opera, that's how i would describe it.
10. A Boy and His Blob Mini-Lyric
This one seems a little rushed in comparison to some of his other material, but it's a fun little jam to fill the space between the next set of tunes. it's pretty funky and fun. So not a bad song, but it's not super awesome.
11. Gotta Run/Be The One with THE MEGAS
Yes. It's at it's core Mega Man 2 with lyrics, but so much is built on top of it with the additions from the Megas that is really stands on it's own now. Personally i never found time to listen to The Megas but I'm going to make an effort to hunt down some more of their stuff. Only problem i have is that some of Brentalfloss's lyrics are overpowered by the rocking music, mostly from mixing it seems but it's still an awesome song.
It can sit comfortably alongside the original, considering how different it really is.
12. Paperboy with Lyrics with THE KONAMI KODE
The 2nd featured artist on the album, this is a very funky breakdown song. He added lyrics to the Kode's already awesome cover of the Paperboy song. It's one of my favorites from the cd considering the last version we had was a rough mini-lyric.
13. Mario Piano Medley
Brentalfloss shows off some more of his musical talents, giving us a pretty solid medley of Mario music. it's an instrumental track, starting of slow but really mellow and chill. Eventually it goes into a little big of ragtime like flair which works with the music so well. It's a nice showcase of the man's talent at playing music and not just adding lyrics to tunes, which does take a lot of skill regardless.
14. Final Fantasy IV Love Theme with Lyrics
This was a surprise song for me and i hate to ruin the joke of it here, but considering it's a review i should do it anyway. So spoilers there. It's a cover of the love theme as done by Eric Cartman from South Park, which works pretty well. it's a spin on the whole love thing so that's all i can say about it. Really solid impersonation i gotta say, along with fitting into character very well
15. The Roommate Song
This is a redux from the 2005 musical "Shades of Gray," which Brentalfloss worked on. I haven't seen the show but i imagine the lyrics pack much of the same wit he shows on the cd and his other videos. It's a pretty solid song that works well on it's own. Talking about the awkward situations roommates can run into. I like it because i love musicals so yeah.
16. Dr. Mario with Lyrics
This is a fairly similar version to his first animated video that showed up on Screwattack. It's a clever song and I like it a lot. There's not much new here, but not a bad thing. Solid somewhat funky song with what i think is a xylophone, making it a unique song for that along. And a clever in character Mario going for most of the song.
Solid song. So yeah liking it.
17. Introspective Duck in Space
A piano cover of the Moon theme from Ducktales. A somewhat more melancholy playing compared to the opening of the cd. still like it a lot. Showing a nice slowdown as we near the end of the cd.
18. Mushroom Kingdom
Another surprise song taking Mario music and setting it into a parody of "Sister Cristian" by Night Ranger, about Mario. A really solid song, regardless of if you get the joke or not. Nice Metal Ballad to help round out the Album.
19. Zelda with Lyrics
Very similar to the original, it might not be any different. but that's not distracting the awesomeness of this song. It's a solid rendition of the classic song from the perspective of the Old Man in the original game.
20. The End?
An assortment of snippets from outtakes of other songs start off by Brentalfloss announcing that the CD is over. Not something you really listen to on it's own but it's what it is.
So all in all I liked the CD, if i had to pick my top 4 tracks that make this a must get for Brentalfans and music lovers, it would be:
Gotta Run/Be the One with the Megas
Ducktales with Lyrics
Paperboy with Lyrics with the Konami Kode
So I was happy with my purchase and feel anyone else who picks it up will love it too.
Too lazy to flip this image around
Here's His Legend of Zelda with Lyrics to congratulate those who read the review.
