What subjects should Podtoid discuss?
Anthony Burch | 3:08 PM on 03.26.2008 67 comments

Tiff told me it might be a good idea to ask you, the faithful listeners I doubly welcome at the beginning of every podcast, what you'd like us to talk about on future shows.

What singular themes would you like us to discuss on the show? Our one-subject shows seem to go over pretty well (previous ones include the King of Kong, our favorite characters, and Arthouse games), so what would you like to see us devote a one-subject show to?

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Things the games industry does wrong in a very general sense. Like how bioware did not defend itself, or microtransaction.

Uh.... which main video game characters do you prefer: the quiet, mysterious types (ala the dube from GTA III)? Or a character whose complete back story and attitude you know from the get-go?

Art Direction. Not arthouse or indie games, but the art directions games use and the style they are made in.

How much friend codes suck.
What would be better than friend codes.
Why nintendo won't leave friend codes behind.

Resident Evil 4: Awesome or AWESOME?

Seriously, I barely listen due to time constraints, but if you spent an hour talking about the beauty of Resident Evil 4 and it's most excellent game design choices, I'd probably listen every week. I love that game.

An entire episode that talks about the world's shittiest games. I love listening to Jim rant about how much ass a game is.

Of course, you probably already did this. I wouldn't know, I got into the whole podcast thing a bit late.

I think a system centric podcast would be cool. What we love, don't love, love to hate etc. about each system. Of course much like EternalDeathSlayer I don't get to listen as often as I'd like so maybe you've done this.

I would say something about Micro-transactions, or the news that Fallout 3 is having 200 endings, and why developers can't settle for something in between 2 (good and evil, a la Bioshock) endings and over-fucking kill 200?

I wouldn't mind hearing your views on spoilers, and how online communities are essentially all about spoiling games. Not maliciously of course, but just from the nature of what an online community is: a LARGE amount of people who have played pretty much every game out there and want to talk about them.

Been on my mind since Boolean vented on the subject (which I think I made a good comment on). Two games off the top of my head that were "spoiled" for me were FF7 and Bioshock. FF7 I can understand because I didn't play the game until 2006, but even with something as recent as Bioshock has pretty much been laid out for me.

In short, someone's desire to not have something spoiled for them versus everyone else's desire to talk about it.

Is there any reason why you can't talk about music in games? I mean, maybe I'm just an audiophile or something, but it seems such an integral part of making an excellent game. Surely you have game soundtracks in your music library? Surely there are games you own where just listening to the music and the sounds will take you back to the first time you played it? Or is it such a dull topic that no-one has anything to say about it?

What things "shouldn't be" in video games? What things are just fed up with developers keep doing? List your top 10 things that developers do that piss you right off. For example, bad camera and character controls (Resident "urine injection to the face" Evil to name one), stupid save systems (see Resident "unexpected spermal lactation" Evil for reference) or irritating exposition segments (like in, say, Resident "I'm going to rape everyone you know and then enjoy watching your stock, poorly scripted reaction" Evil).

And finally, why don't you just do one big Games That Time Forgot podcast, and what made them great?

I believe that the formula to a fun podcast is hearing your witty anecdotes about games, the strengths and weaknesses of games in different contexts and how it can relate to current and future events, then tell each other that you're all wrong, and then resort to naughty language and threats of torture by 80s culture. Stick to the most obvious topics, because you're interesting enough to make them work regardless.

I'll second Neonie's suggestion about art direction. Talk about it from a historical standpoint, major trends over time (gray and brown palettes anyone?), and how (if ever) it can impact game play. Games that were defined by good or bad art direction.

This is the first thing that popped into my head, but since the word 'innovation' is thrown around so much nowadays when speaking about games, howsabout doing a show about innovation in games? What is it and what isn't it? Are people by and large even using the term correctly? Is it actually important for a game to be innovative?

But something tells me this may have been done before.

How about with all this Wiiware talk, you can talk about the state of XBLA/PSN/Wiiware and why they are good, bad or just shit. Something along those lines?

Either that or Van Halen.

If I could come up with good singular topics, Failcast would be a hell of a lot better.

Although I would like to hear an episode on game music and its importance to the experience (beyond the usual Rez and Guitar Hero categories).

To be a little more specific on my suggestion. A few days ago the developer of N+ called out XBLA as having only shit games. While I don't agree with that, I do agree that a lot of games developed for XBLA that aren't rehashes/remakes have been shit.

Can't speak for the PSN, as I haven't played it. And the WiiWare doesn't look like much is coming out that is too promising, and how will hard drive space come into play.

Just a thought anyways, maybe it will help you out some.

I like the idea of a show devoted to music in games.

Alternatively you could attempt to decipher the hidden meaning behind Chocolate Rain.

I agree that talking about the development process would be cool, but I don't know how feasible that is because you'd just be on the outside looking in.

How about talking about women in video games? In the way that they've evolved from damsels in distress to large-chested women who now dominate the scene and make gamers look like horny douchebags.

You should host-switch for April Fools, Dyson hosts Podtoid, Jim hosts Retroforce and Rev hosts Podcastle. The win will be epic.

How about the moments when certain genres became stale. Like when people stopped caring about platformers, adventure games and when FPS' started to become unintentional self parodies.

Maybe something about genres? How they developed, cliches and restrictions that seem to come along with them. Your thoughts on the future, new genre or crossovers like an FPS RTS where your troops are people who are playing a tactical FPS and there is some kind of promotion/reward system if they follow your orders. Stop rambling. Anyway, whatever it is I look forward to it, Podtoid always sparks off a lot of thoughs in me.

You've touched on it briefly before, but what do you think of a discussion about how games are molded not only by their peers and the time period they were developed in, but the influence of the head creator(s). For example, is Peter Molyneux an egotist because he makes god games, or does he make god games because he's an egotist? Same for Will Wright.

Preview show: talk about games you're looking forward to or have high hopes for.

A game politics show (keeping JT talk to a minimum, because he's easy)

A show where you try hard to take mobile games seriously (though they may or may not deserve it)

A series of console themed episodes.

An episode with Ron and/or Neiro guest hosting.
