In reading the comments to Aaron's great Brawl review, I was more than a little flattered/confused to hear so many people wondering how I personally felt about the game.
In short: I like it. A lot. Except for the fucking online.
I haven't gotten a single random online match to work, and thanks to Nintendo's stupid fucking antiquated friend code system I haven't been able to play with anyone else I know since nobody has my friend code (which is: 4639-8642-8814).
It's outright inexcusable to have such a shitty online mode with no leaderboards or voicechat in the goddamn fourth system generation, and if Brawl wasn't so good otherwise I'd be tempted to take off three or more points from a hypothetical numerical score just for that. I want to try out the online mode, so if you feel like kicking my ass just post your friend code and we'll see what we can do.
Otherwise, though, the game is fucking incredible. We're currently at the point where no one has found any irritating exploits which somehow become translated into "skills"; (L-cancelling and wavedashing were not intended by the creators, and were removed for Brawl -- what more evidence do you need that they aren't "skills" that should be used, a la snaking?). For once, I'm on a level playing field with my other Smash-loving friends; I can play as Snake and have just as good a chance of beating Falco since he can't do his little short-hop laser thing anymore. I'm intensely worried that we'll find some Brawl equivalents to L-cancelling and wavedashing which will stupidly be accepted by the Smash community as perfectly legal, but, for now, I'm really enjoying myself. For all my anti-Smashfag ranting, though, I turned off Final Smash Balls and Assist Trophies almost immediately after seeing them all.
I love the new characters, pretty much. I can't imagine why the designers thought it'd be a great idea to include yet ANOTHER fucking Star Fox clone while leaving out Mega Man, but I'm having so much fun with Snake that it's hard to be irritated for too long. Not for a month or so, anyway.
As you'll hear in my upcoming RFGO rant, I hate the actual gameplay of the Subspace Emissary but still love its inclusion and would never deduct points from my hypothetical numerical score because of it: the badass CG cut scenes are a more than worthy excuse for the Emissary's existence, and you don't HAVE to play it to unlock all the characters, so why knock off points just because the last two hours are repetitive and awful?
So, yeah -- in conclusion, I mostly like the new stuff, I like what the Subspace Emissary has to offer, and I fucking hate the online. I'd probably give it a 9, or an 8.5 or something. Editor's choice, either way
:D
Also, feel free to add me if you want to test it out: 2277-6293-0947
There's also a forum thread if you feel like tossing your number into the wilderness.
That, and embedding our HTML formatting in the Embed Youtubes option.
I still have the original N64 version, which is still the best.
Code: 2750-0776-6751
I played a few matches last night, only noticed lag once.
I write everything in Notepad with Word wrap turned off. It's the only thing I trust to format it properly after I hit "Make Live!"
Good review, by the way. I like you better than Uncle Aaron. (j/k, love you, Linde.)
When I play later tonight, I'll out your code in my friend's list.

I added Necros and Mxy too, so you bitches better put me in.
And you have my eternal respect for your comment on snakers, wave dashing and other shit, Mario Kart DS is pretty much ruined thanks to snakers and I hope we don't see in the future Mario Kart.
My friend code: 1590-4361-6937
Hope to play you sometime!
I tried to go online last night but the lag was TERRIBLES. Both matches were decided by who fell off first, because the lag was so bad by the time you realized you were falling it was too late to attempt to recover, even as Pit. Hopefully it will clear up as we get less and less people all trying to log in simultaneously because HEY LETS TRY THIS NEW THING
I have no problem with snaking, L-Cancelling, or Wave Dashing. Either learn to do it and play on their level, or find others who can't do it and play at theirs. You're essentially complaining that they put more time into learning how to play the game better than you did.
Just because you have to make an effort to cheat, doesn't make it any less assholish.
Anyway, my friend code is 5455-9072-2390. I'd love to play you (and any of the other folks who've posted) sometime. Feel free to add the digits and I'll do the same.
If those people are "cheating", then anyone who is not simply mashing the buttons blindfolded is cheating. You can't just separate some advanced tactics as cheating and others as not, it's all or nothing.
Of course, I'm not talking about the stuff that breaks the game, like those bugs in MvC2 that remove players from the screen or lock up the machine.
The link has about 50 other people's friend codes.
I'm talking exploits that people abuse that where never meant to be in the game.
Wave dashing, L-Cancelling and Snaking where not meant to be exploited in that manner, otherwise they would have been recognized by the devs and put into Brawl, that's not advanced tactics to me, its flat out cheating.
And a fighting is a poor choice for advanced tactics, EVERY single fighting has a move or something you can exploit and in those games its been there since they started out and they are acknowledged by the devs so those are advanced tactics.
and @Kyousuke Nanbu: I don't agree. Yes, wavedashing and snaking where not meant to be exploited in that manner. L-cancelling is intentional though, it was a carryover from the SSB64 days, except that it just halved the landing time instead of eliminating it completely (like in SSB64). Also, why is it cheating? It's not unfair like one player has access to it and another doesn't, it's basically one player choosing to do it while the other doesn't. You have a choice, if you don't like wavedashing because you think it's cheap, find people who think it's cheap too and play together.
Just because the devs didn't intend the game to be played like this doesn't mean you can't. You are the ones playing, not the devs, and you can play it however you freaking one - why are there people like this who complain? There's no need to accuse people who play primarily to win of cheating. These players play for money, you don't, so obviously there would be different opinions on how to play.
