Escape to the City: New York Comic-con 2012 (Oct 11-14)

Hey everybody, members of Dtoid will be at the upcoming New York Comic Con. Our meetup plans will take place in the evening as every night during the show we will meetup at the convention center and then head out to a different restaurant in the city. (Note: Please buy a Metrocard as we will be doing some significant traveling during the weekend)

There is a special emphasis on Saturday night as we will be doing karaoke that evening. When I nail down the location of which karaoke place we will be using, I will let you know asap. By the way, one of the potential karaoke places that we may use has SA2's Escape from the City as a singable song, hence the title.

If you need anything else (such as a way to contact me for more info) that weekend, either PM me or contact me at andrew.benton at destructoid.com and I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can.   read

My Aunt and My Family (which includes you, Dtoiders) and a song

My Family

Hey guys and gals, it has been a while since I last wrote a cblog for this fantastic community. As some of you might have heard, I have an Aunt, who I have been really close to for a long time, struggle with cancer and is just about to start hospice at home. While she was hospitalized, for long periods of time, I was tasked with a huge responsibility, the care of my other Aunt, who has Down Syndrome. It has been a rough summer to say the least.

Just today, there was a conversation about an artist that both of these Aunts has seen at some points. An artist that has what I consider to be one of the greatest albums ever created, Carole King. When her name was mentioned, I was instantly reminded of a song that embodies what I like about Dtoid.

A fantastic song

When you are at your lowest of lows and the world around you isn't treating you right, the good people here will hear you out and try to support in the best way that they can. One of the people from DTNY reached out to me after I talked about this and offered me his ear (figuratively) if wanted I wanted to talk about this situation. I haven't found too many places with such supportive people in my life.

So, to Solar20XX or anyone else on this site, if life has got you down and you need to someone to talk to, just contact me. Also, if you going to PAX next week or are planning to come to NYC for a visit and you want help getting around or need help meeting other Dtoider , you can contact me as well and I will do what can to help you out. Remember, when you are active with the Dtoid crew, you have got fantastic friends.

PS: Shout out to DTNY peep TT and his fiance Anna, who are getting married this weekend. DTNY will be there to celebrate all weekend long.   read

I just want to give all the Dtoiders going to Boston next weekend a couple of small updates concerning PAX East. First, here is the list of Dtoid staff members who will attending the show.

Andrew Benton
Caitlin Cooke
Darren Nakamura
Hamza Aziz
Holly Green
Jonathan Holmes
Josh Derocher
Max Scoville
Patrick Hancock
Samit Sarkar
Tara Long

Second, I still want to create a full list of Dtoid members attending the show. So if you are going, please let me know in the comment section below and give me the Dtoid related group that you are closest to or your general area.

Finally, we have a lot of people requesting that their avatars be adopted for the show but we don't have the number of avatar adopters to match. If you are going and still wish to adopt an avatar, let me know.

PAX East Plans and Adopt an Avatar

Hey Dtoiders, we are only a little over two weeks away from one of the biggest gaming related shows of the year, PAX East and Dtoid has some awesome plans to make your evenings during the weekend very special.

On Thursday, Dtoiders will be heading to the Brattle theater for an awesome Harmonix event during the evening. Order tickets for an opportunity to go to play Rock Band battle of the Bands with guest judges from the Gaming Press. For more info, check out the link.

On Friday, we are throwing our own PAX party with our good friends at Shiftylook. It is all ages affair so don't be afraid to join us if you under 21. If you wish to stuff your faces full of Fried Chicken and Waffles, check out the Facebook page for more details.

On Saturday, we are heading to a PAX staple place for a good time, The Elephant and Castle. This small bar and restaurant chain has been a odd sort of mini home for us during PAX events. Unlike the one in Seattle, this place has something very special going down on Saturday nights: karaoke.

On Sunday, our friends Andres and Matt from Flixist will be checking out the Film The FP, in which the world handles the future conflict in one truly glorious way: through DDR playing. If you wish to purchase a ticket to this crazy flick, check out this site and order a ticket.

Also, the Adopt an Avatar program is back in play. If you can't make the show and wish to join us in spirit or wish to take someone specific to show, let us know in the comments so that a someone's internet id picture can have the time of their life.

Hope to see you in two weeks.   read

Who the hell am I and some of those anniversary shout outs

Hello, Dtoid community, my name is Andrew, as you can obviously see by the username. I did go by another name on this site for around 4 and a 1/2 years, power-glove. I run the the New York/New Jersey based Dtoid NY and help manage big events like PAX for the Dtoid community as a community coordinator.

I did a post a little while ago as an introduction before PAX Prime and I think I should do a quick repost of it because it felt it was pretty good and gives a good sense of how I got started here.

Hello, ladies and germs, this is your friendly neighborhood video game accessory coming live into computer screens through the magic of text and a series of tubes. For those that know me, how goes it? But for those of you that don't, which is definitely a great deal of people on here now, here is quick intro. I am power-glove from NYC. Yes, my username is based on the original NES accessory that was used to elevate the careers of Jenny Lewis and Fred Savage and not the power-up for Bomberman by the same name. I first started out as a guy who just happened to find Dtoid through a Rock Band video, a game which was one of the things that I became synonymous with here on the site, done by Daniel "Husky Hog" Lingen and Tiff Chow.

After a while on the site, I attended an tech show known as Digital Life. Over the course of the show, I had a lot of fun, and even got the opportunity to meet Gabe Newell but that was not the highlight of show for me. Towards the end of the event, I noticed an individual who was wearing the famous GuitarAtomik "STFUAJPG" shirt. I decided to say hello,, then introduced myself and talked with a fellow Dtoid member until the show ended. The fellow Dtoid member went by the username "Bronxbomber21" but you may know him a little better as Samit Sarkar, the main Sports man for the site. After hosting several 360 FNF sessions, posting countless news blurbs and doing tipster work (and a lot of Rock Band news), I began to become great friends with the users and the staff on Dtoid. This led up to my first major Dtoid New York event as Phist invited me to hang out with Lauren "Atheistium" Wainwright, who you may know as on of the people on the old Podcastle show, and the rest of the Dtoid New York crew.

A month or so after the event, I was asked by CTZ to help out with a very special project which asked certain Dtoid members to help organize and coordinate events in their local areas. This was the birth of the Dtoid City Groups and began my epic journey with the wonderful members of Dtoid New York. From NYCC to Blipfest and all of our parties in between, it has been an amazing ride throughout. I am proud of the way that DTNY continues to grow on a regular basis with diverse group of individuals who come together for one reason: to have fun. Please if you are in the area, please get in touch with me for some possible fun in the area.

And now, I coordinate efforts to make some of the big public events such as PAX, a more engrossing experience for our community and its members. It has been an honor and privilege to this for you guys and gals. I have to thank Niero, Hamza, the former EIC Nick Chester, and Samit and all of the members of this great community for helping to make my time on here very special. It has gotten me through some very hard times and I can never thank you people enough for your support over the years.

I have been very busy lately with a very tough family situation as of late but I will have an update for you guys on what Dtoid will be doing for PAX East tomorrow. Thank you and have a great evening.

Here's to more great years for the old Dtoid army.   read

Dtoid NY Meetup-3/10-Paintball n Stuff

I know that this short notice but DTNY will be meeting at the end of the week on Saturday. In celebration of our great friend Drake returning to the East Coast, we have decide to celebrate by hanging out in the same place where we last hung out with him at the Palisades Mall. On this time we have decided to go to the mall's paintball arena, Vendetta Paintball, and shoot each other with little balls of paints until we are blue in the face, possibly literally.

If you have any interest in going, let me know in the comment section so I can get in touch with you with more contact info and the proper meetup time.   read
