I think Modern Warfare 1 was great, and it’s a bit of a shame that the games that followed it sullied its reputation, MW2’s story was a complete mess though, I think that’s why people can’t read any deeper into its themes or what it’s trying to say (if anything), because the stuff we should be able to take at face value doesn’t make a lick of sense.
That said, you made some good points and this was pretty well written, I saw the title written in all caps and thought this would be full of fanboy ramblings, so thanks for the pleasant surprise!

Thanks for your comment and the link. Plot is insane, but that ended up being part of the charm for me, although I do recognize its contrived development.
Thanks especially for your observation regarding the all-caps title. I always use all-caps titles on my website, and failed to realize that doing that in the Dtoid blogs makes the article stand out as shouty. Fixed now.

Great blog. I never understood why people think the MW series is some AMERICA FUCK YEAH! type of game. If it's wanking off anyone it's the Brits.
Off-topic: Film Critic Hulk is great. He just got a gig at Badass Digest. He totally deserves it!

The whole series actually puts a negative spin on "America saves the world" and the whole concept of patriotism.
I hope Modern Warfare 3 doesn't lose that with IW going through all the staff shuffling this past year. And maybe they'll take some time to wrap things up properly, because MW2's themes got lost under some messy storytelling.

Good blog! Nice to see someone hit on the highlights of the MW story instead of all the negative. I just don't have the same hype for MW3 (story wise) as I did for MW2. Perhaps I'll be surprised and they'll be able to pull it off - despite past developmental events.

It was Chipman's video that pointed me to his work, actually. And from what I've read so far, he totally does deserve it.

I've watched an interesting video interview with writer Jesse Stern in which he explains that when he arrived, the team already had several setpieces ready. It was up to Stern to tie them all together as coherently as possible. I can picture him reading the outline of the International Space Station sequence and banging his head on his desk.
And the storytelling is indeed messy because of its scale and format, but within those limitations it is surprisingly engaging. The strength, I think, is in characters like Price and (in the previous and more grounded game) MacMillan.
TonicBH: "Hey, I LIKED the Treyarch Call of Duty games. Never understood the hatred of them, I enjoyed them."
Allow me to expand: WORLD AT WAR, while deserving of praise for having highlighted the Soviets' role in World War II, was utterly bland on the American side of things, and while Reznov breathed some life into the Russian campaign, its beats were similarly by-the-numbers. It's a good game, one that I felt strenghtened the series, although mildly.
But BLACK OPS? Narratively, a piece of shit. As crazy as MODERN WARFARE 2 might be, it has several moments of inspiration -- Captain Price's monologue near the ending comes to mind -- while BLACK OPS was just a stack of cliches obsessed with trying to be awesome, but without any weight behind its attempts. The characters were dull, and even the charismatic Reznov was sabotaged by the pathetic twist in the third act. More importantly, the game stank of patriotism, and it's hard to bother looking for proof that it doesn't after the final scene, which has to be the most patriotism ever crammed into a frame.
It's technically competent, mind you, and it is fun despite being the least interactive CALL OF DUTY. It is also very forgettable.

The trailers have me optimistic regarding the intensity of the setpieces, but not the competence of the narrative, which in previous games COULD be relatively subtle. I've seen the footage that Jim Sterling called MW3's NO RUSSIAN level and it tries so ridiculously hard to be poignant that it's almost funny. Still, I must see it in context before judging, and speculation is no good until them.

Oh wow. I had always thought of the MW series as a mindless frag fest for frat boys and thirteen year olds. This actually makes it seem interesting. Good job Andre.
