[Shortblog]Blade Runner remade in Crysis engine
Alasdair Duncan | 9:39 AM on 05.05.2009 4 comments

Ages ago in the mists of time, I wrote my firstcblog entry about my love for the Blade Runner game and lo and behold it was completely ignored. Well, considering I've got a revisionist bent that would put George Lucas to shame (or Ridley Scott to be more accurate), I'd like to talk about the game again after seeing something this evening. A post of Rock Paper Shotgun pointed me towards some incredible re-enactments of a Blade Runner scene, rendered in the Unreal 3 engine. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I read some of the comments and noticed that someone else was thinking was I was thinking: a modern remake of the Blade Runner game using the new graphics engines like Unreal 3 or theCrysis engine?

It's a valid question, what with things like the Half-Life and Golden Eye source engine remakes happening. As a commenter pointed out, put the game into a new graphics engine and give it some Mass Effect gameplay (probably with less shooting) and I'd be over the fucking moon. Give me the same incredible atmosphere and sense of reality that the movie and the game did and you'd be on to a winner. And with videogames willingness to at least approach ideas like mortality and the philosophy of life itself, a new Blade Runner could be a great success. Considering that the original game was one of the last sucessful point and click action/adventure games of it's time, the idea of an adventure game where detective work and the chance of the game being over if you kill the wrong person, would really stand out today.

Note: whilst Googling the game I found that 1Rev Anthony wrote an article on the game ages ago, which also has no comments. Strange.
