All this insider knowledge goes over my head, bro. Is it socially acceptable for me to fap this blog just because I like the sidebar?
In the end, Valve can do what they want.
I've downloaded Alien Swarm but haven't checked it out yet.
I give this a good fapping either way.

Actually, Alien Swarm hints at more campaigns in the future, but I'm 100% convinced you'll have to pay for them. I like Alien Swarm a lot, but after seeing that, it really is just a demo. One with all the good bits intact though.
That's why it's free.
Also, big difference between Swarm and Breed is that Swarm heavily relies on L4D style teamwork to survive. I really liked that throughout the game. Especially when you're trying to wield a door shut as your teammates hold the line for you. It's just a shame that sometimes it's a bit harsh when you need a specific tool or weapon and the guy who had a flamer died way back in the mission.

As I've said, I've not played it yet. The 2GB download is gonna stretch my cap for the rest of the month. Plus I've got a LAN party coming up, so I can probably get a back up there.
But it'd be interesting to see if this is a free game, that's then funded my microtransations. Pay $5 for a 2 hour campaign, plus new weapons? Seems likely.

Alien Breed was pretty shit anyway, from what I played of it.
I won't lie, they look really similar, but then, loads of games copy each other so I don't see how this is any different. One could argue that if people download and love Alien Swarm, they'll be *more* inclined to then buy Alien Breed, like some sort of extended demo or something. In fact, they may think they're part of the same series. So it's potentially as beneficial as it is detrimental.
I can't speak for Valve, but I don't see much malice in this. It wouldn't even be a good business decision to screw over Team 17 for no good reason whatsoever.

Alien Swarm was originally a mod for UT2k4 (developed over 6 years ago), the devs were hired by Valve quite a while ago, continuing the source port of their mod on their side.
How the fuck is that fishy? If anything the other kill-loads-of-aliens games did "loan" things from Swarm.
Also, though besides the point [whatever that may be] Alien Breed (only played the demo) suffered from camera and control issues that made it a chore, Swarm on the other hand is, judging by my session yesterday, quite an excellent game.

I know some people say Half-Life 2 is the same as Halo, so...
Really now, the best answer is to play.

From what I hear Alien Swarm has been in progress for quite a while actually, which would reverse which side is being fishy instantly.
Mueti has it right, Alien Swarm was a Unreal mod when Valve hired the team behind it. They then went to work on the L4D series and once L4D2 was done Valve let them finish work on Alien Swarm as a standalone game.
Besides, the original Alien Breed came out over 15 years ago. Surprised it took this long for someone to take the idea and run further with it.

isnt Alien Breed a Team 17(worms) game? which was on the amiga back in the day. if i recall its a reboot of that game.
3/4 scrolling shooters. Aliens. A guy who has to write an article to get paid and hasn't really put much time into doing it. Two of these things are awesome. The other won't get much repeat play from me.
Hi, Thought I should probably jump in here and comment. I'm the Community manager at Team17 and with regard to Alien Swarm, Valve told us about their plans and even put back their original plans for release by a few weeks.
We also hope that the Steam community can find a way to like both games as they do in fact play to different strengths. Alien Swarm is a blast in 4 player multiplayer and Alien Breed plays more like a survival horror game in it's single player mode.
Anyway, it's not stopped us planning the next episode and hopefully the community will see another step up from us in that game from the first episode.

Hi Bill,
That's good to know. As I said, I've only played the demo for Alien Breed and I haven't downloaded Alien Swarm yet, but I just thought it was weird that there were two similar looking games that were released within a short period of time and one was free. That's cool that Valve put back their own game so it didn't clash. I also didn't realise Alien Breed was a remake either. Thanks for clearing that up man. I wasn't trying to imply any dodgy dealings from either company, I just found the timing and the pricing of Alien Swarm a bit of a surprise.

It is indeed strange, but something tells me Valve knew this too, way before they decided it was time to prepare the game for release. I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed the game's release so it wouldn't overshadow Alien Breed Impact, but don't take my word for it, as I have no proof to backup my thoughts.
Valve is notified ahead of time of when a game will be released on their client and a month or so is a short amount of time between two similar kinds of games. Very strange setup indeed.
