First ever Game Prototype testin' MOOnday!
AgentMOO | 11:52 AM on 02.04.2008 2 comments

Test case: Hosting a game

It's time to test out my game. I am trying to get an idea for what percentage of people out here are able to host a Moo Prototype game. My game uses UPNP to communicate with your router and tell it "Hey! I want to host a game off of this computer, if anyone tries to connect, send them over here!". This is how XBOX Live works (Whenever it does work that is! yuk yuk yuk!) and I have built a component on my own to replicate that functionality. On to the testing scenarios!

I will be on tonight around 8 for testing, feel free to contact me on gTalk as Agent MOO, or aim as Agent Mu. Thanks in advance for helping me test!

Before getting started, get the game here: Moo Prototype Home

Quick Test:
1. Load up MooProto and choose Host Game and then Start Game.
2. The message Initializing firewall registration... will appear, and after a few seconds a success or failure message will appear.
2a. If the firewall failed to initialize, and you are feeling adventurous, see the matlocking guide below, then go to step 4.
2b. If you received a successfully registered message, or are configuring the port (22182, UDP) manually continue to step 3.
3. Go to your start menu and open up a second copy of the game (while the other is still "hosting" a game). Select the Join game option, and connect to the game that has your computer name. If the game connects, and you can run around, then you are all set to host!
4. Post the answers to the following questions on either this forum post, Community Blog Post, or send an email to betatest at agentmoo.com
Did the game report a success upon trying for the first time?
If not, were you able to get it to run after changing settings?
If you were able to fix it, what was the cause?
If you received any error, please attach the file or post a link to the file C:\Program Files\MOO Prototype\Errorlog.txt

Matlocking Guide for Troubleshooters:
A. in Control Panel > Windows Firewall, ensure that Exceptions are allowed, and Moo Prototype and UPNP are checked as allowed.

B. In Internet Explorer, run the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool. Network Address Translator type and UPNP should both return supported. If not, please attach the detailed report to the response you send.
