Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
if a game purely puts the game play before the story they get a sub par impact from the story.
I remember a time when the ending filled in all the gaps in the story of a game, when the big twist came or they all lived happy ever after.
Although i've not seen an ending to a game for many months.
I just don't get around to finishing my games these days.
The last game ending to truly stick out in my mind and affect me was Snake Eater. That was years ago. A shame.
Lufia 2? Awesome ending. Terranigma? Awesome ending.
Nothing pisses me off more than "You killed Evil Stan! The kingdom rejoices! A winner is you!" and a credit roll. Sooooo, what happened after that? Did my Spunky Sidekick go on to be the brave knight he kept jabbering about every time he had a plot point? What happened to Evil Stan's Tower of Unprecedented Naughtiness? Did it just get knocked down or is it now a vacation spot for the good people of Dumfuk? How about me? Did I get babes after my epic adventure? What happened? TELL ME.
my guess is that 90% of game endings suck.
THE END...
And, that was it. Those endings suck. At least they're trying now. One of the endings that stick out in my mind it Eternal Darkness. You had to beat it 4 times to get the special ending. That game was worth playing 4 times though. I really wish they would redo it on a new system and just keep everything else the same besides updating the graphics. That game was epic, literally.
This brings to mind an excerpt by Margaret Atwood:
"You'll have to face it, the endings are the same however you slice it. Don't be deluded by any other endings, they're all fake, either deliberately fake, with malicious intent to deceive, or just motivated by excessive optimism if not downright sentimentality. The only authentic ending is the one provided here: John and Mary die. John and Mary die. John and Mary die.
So much for endings. Beginnings are always more fun. True connoisseurs, however, are known to favor the stretch in between, since it's the hardest to do anything with."
i don't expect most games toeven have a great ending, as most games are simply average. i only expect a worthwhile ending from a stellar game. and also, i think you have to make trade-offs....for example, in a game where there are different ways to go about completing missions and really in-depth gameplay, the ending shouldn't be the crown jewel...the gameplay itself is. or a game like guitar hero....who cares about an ending....enjoy the game.
and if art imitates life, we should be in it for the journey, not the destination. if you believe in that sort of thing.
One of my SNES favourites is shoot em up UN Squadron (Area 88) based on the Area 88 manga. Because it wasn't linked to the Area 88 series in the west, and having completed it I wonder if I got the correct ending the japanese version might have got. The ending wasn't anything special, but the game was blinding fun. That's why I play games now, for fun. If I get a good story and ending that's a bonus to that primary fun.
Chrono Trigger goes on my list too. A great story, told through great characters. With 12 endings to the game, its one of the best value for money games, I have in my games collection. They don't make them like this anymore unfortunately. All good endings too.
So yeah, it depends on the game genre and if its non-license or not. Developers need to build their scripting departments to progress and so improve games that need a good story.
Fighting games though...... dear god....... someone needs to help those fighting games with their stories. It would actually be nice to have some cut-scenes or something in between fights, other than the talking at the beginning of the match, that explained what the hell was going on.
