Do game endings even matter anymore?
Action Bastard | 2:57 PM on 09.16.2007 29 comments

Do they? I can remember a time, when I played a game for the ending. Now, I have to beat a game 7 times to get all the endings to even understand what the fuck is going on. And they just aren’t that satisfying. Do they matter? Should we just focus on the gameplay and not the reason why we are playing (in relation to the story)? I want endings that are of decent length, the only ending in the game (games with multiple lead characters are the exception) and make sense (for the most part). See the ending to The Darkness? WTF was that? Bioshock? Well, I need to beat it 2 more times to complete the story. Gears of War? They should have just had the screen go black and say “The End?”. Halo 2? Nuff said. For as many games that have good, decent endings, far too many just end up letting the game itself, down. Endings to games that stick out in my mind are:

Phantasy Star II
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
FFVII
The Mark of Kri
God of War I & 2
Mario 64
Zelda: Wind Waker
Halo
Ninja Gaiden
The first R&C and Jax

Will it get better or worse as technology “advances”?

it all depends on the game really. the same could be said about movies.

if a game purely puts the game play before the story they get a sub par impact from the story.

I think they will just get worse.
I remember a time when the ending filled in all the gaps in the story of a game, when the big twist came or they all lived happy ever after.

Although i've not seen an ending to a game for many months.
I just don't get around to finishing my games these days.

Man, you're right nothing else sucks more thena shitty ending to a game.. I think if your gameplpay is going to be good, then your ending should be top fucking notch.. That is why people play a games..

this is in part the fault of emphasis on graphics over story. older games had better endings because they had to be better written to draw the player in. gears of war is a good example, actually, while the experience is really fun, the writing/characterizations/aliens are just about the most cliche sci-fi action plot devices ever. nothing really *happens* in that game, you are just moved from point a to b and one mini episode to the next. "oh no, the resonator didn't work. we have to fight more aliens." wtf. if it had been a movie nobody would have seen it.

but now I think we are coming back to the point where devs have become comfortable with the graphics, and they are no longer the driving force in development so studios are freer to experiment with alternative styles, and I think good writing is around the corner. there have really been only a couple good games that have even approached real intellectual or emotional stimulation. but maybe I'm just a cold bastard

To be honest? Endings have never been terrific overall and truly memorable climaxes are in the minority. It's sad, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that game endings aren't worth getting to most of the time.

The last game ending to truly stick out in my mind and affect me was Snake Eater. That was years ago. A shame.

actually a good counterpoint is chrono trigger. Now there's a game where you WANT to get all the endings. and it's awesome. how sad is it that the pinnacle of game endings occurred in 1995?

I don't believe that game endings are overall worse these days than they used to be. I think that's us talking as cynical older gamers. Yes, there were memorable endings all throughout gaming history, but they were not in the majority, just like these days.

also backflip, not your fault, but thanks for ruining the ending of saints row for me. actually that's not that cliche. what other games can you think of kill off the main character?

I liked almost all the endings of Silent Hill 2, actually. The original Silent Hill though? Man, I got the bad ending for that and felt like I'd just been raped ... not in a good way.

Most game endings have always sucked. I remember reading a letter to EGM back in 1993 that bitched about the same thing -- that there were sucky endings to games. Honestly, this issue has nothing to do with developers focusing on graphics over story as Bahmut Zero just said. It's just the way things are in videogames.

What I want in an ending is a follow-up. If I've just invested 20, 30, hell maybe 60 hours of my life into something, I'd at least like the courtesy of an epilogue. I want to know what happens after the game.

Lufia 2? Awesome ending. Terranigma? Awesome ending.

Nothing pisses me off more than "You killed Evil Stan! The kingdom rejoices! A winner is you!" and a credit roll. Sooooo, what happened after that? Did my Spunky Sidekick go on to be the brave knight he kept jabbering about every time he had a plot point? What happened to Evil Stan's Tower of Unprecedented Naughtiness? Did it just get knocked down or is it now a vacation spot for the good people of Dumfuk? How about me? Did I get babes after my epic adventure? What happened? TELL ME.

my guess is that 90% of game endings suck.

Remember some of the old NES endings?

THE END...

And, that was it. Those endings suck. At least they're trying now. One of the endings that stick out in my mind it Eternal Darkness. You had to beat it 4 times to get the special ending. That game was worth playing 4 times though. I really wish they would redo it on a new system and just keep everything else the same besides updating the graphics. That game was epic, literally.

"Bahamut, it's cliche in the sense that it's the simplest, easiest way to end a story. Honestly, they might as well have just been like, "AND THEN I WOKE UP!""

This brings to mind an excerpt by Margaret Atwood:

"You'll have to face it, the endings are the same however you slice it. Don't be deluded by any other endings, they're all fake, either deliberately fake, with malicious intent to deceive, or just motivated by excessive optimism if not downright sentimentality. The only authentic ending is the one provided here: John and Mary die. John and Mary die. John and Mary die.

So much for endings. Beginnings are always more fun. True connoisseurs, however, are known to favor the stretch in between, since it's the hardest to do anything with."

i think a lot of it has to do with nostalgia. when i was a kid, everything was more amazing than it seems to be now. cartoons were better (g.i. joe, thundercats, he-man and transformers). cereal was better (nintendo cereal, count chocula, alpha-bits with marshmellows). music was better (beastie boys, guns 'n roses, weezer). everything seems like it used to be better than it is now. and while there might be somewhat of an argument that endings aren't as good as they used to be, i think most of it is nostalgia.

i don't expect most games toeven have a great ending, as most games are simply average. i only expect a worthwhile ending from a stellar game. and also, i think you have to make trade-offs....for example, in a game where there are different ways to go about completing missions and really in-depth gameplay, the ending shouldn't be the crown jewel...the gameplay itself is. or a game like guitar hero....who cares about an ending....enjoy the game.

and if art imitates life, we should be in it for the journey, not the destination. if you believe in that sort of thing.

Game endings once resulted in as much as logging your score and a fat The End. I guess endings clearly depand on the type of game you are playing, and how likely the capacity for a decent deep story is. Then there's the sometimes burdenous license games out there.

One of my SNES favourites is shoot em up UN Squadron (Area 88) based on the Area 88 manga. Because it wasn't linked to the Area 88 series in the west, and having completed it I wonder if I got the correct ending the japanese version might have got. The ending wasn't anything special, but the game was blinding fun. That's why I play games now, for fun. If I get a good story and ending that's a bonus to that primary fun.

Chrono Trigger goes on my list too. A great story, told through great characters. With 12 endings to the game, its one of the best value for money games, I have in my games collection. They don't make them like this anymore unfortunately. All good endings too.

So yeah, it depends on the game genre and if its non-license or not. Developers need to build their scripting departments to progress and so improve games that need a good story.

The best ending I've seen of late, was God of War 2 by the way. Great angry story superbly, told in cool cut scenes.

The endings for A Link to the Past and Super Mario World were two of the best endings ever. I think that MGS 3 had a pretty amazing story overall and a badass ending to boot. I think endings do matter, to us at least. Not all game developers are concerned about endings, especially if there'll be a sequel, which there usually is to everything nowadays.
Fighting games though...... dear god....... someone needs to help those fighting games with their stories. It would actually be nice to have some cut-scenes or something in between fights, other than the talking at the beginning of the match, that explained what the hell was going on.

I'm with everyone who thinks that game endings have always kinda sucked. There's plenty of games I remember from the NES era on that just displayed "CONGRADULATIONS!" before resetting to the title screen. I'd definitely like to see better endings in today's games, but don't think it's a problem that's gotten progressively worse over time... It's just always been there. You'd think developers would have learned by now.
